Grammar School Brighton

In 1905, the Headmaster and founder purchased Rosstrevor, a large estate south of Allee St and its surrounding swampland. This land is now known as the Crowther Oval, sitting at the centre of the school. The oval was constructed by the help of “Old Boy engineers” who called upon “4000 loads of filling” to produce the oval.
Provides teachers with a wider array of learning experiences to engage individual students and meet individual learning needs. We acknowledge that our school is on the Country of the people of the Kulin Nations. We wish to honour the connection to Country of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and pay respect to their Traditional Custodians and Elders past, present and emerging. At BGS, all pursuits are valued – academic, the arts, sport, community service – they all contribute to developing a successful young man.

The year level was split across both campuses with the day filled with a mixture of academic classes as well as relationship-building activities. Highlights for the year 7s included exploring each other’s school environments and getting to know each other. The spotlight has been on Science this week with many fantastic events happening around the school to celebrate Science Week. The visit from ‘Rookeepers Wild Display’ was a highlight, with the week being capped off tomorrow with rocket launches on the Crowther.
With exemplary effort in each and every subject, his academics are the first among equals. Haileybury Early Learning Centres are the start of an exciting and rewarding lifelong journey. Young children are given new opportunities to explore further, discover more and grow together, while developing their unique capabilities and a love for learning.

This weekend we look forward to some significant sports fixtures, including Friday under lights for the First Soccer team as well as another big match for AFL on the Crowther on Saturday. Both matches are against Caulfield Grammar and we look forward to a big turnout. The Year 10 Awake program takes place for all Year 10 students from Tuesday 28 February to Friday 3 March at Mount Hotham. The Awake program focuses on building connections, being authentic and finding purpose. We aim to do this through connecting, slowing down, sharing authentically, reflecting and journalling. On Tuesday evening, Year 7 and Year 10 parents attended our Outdoor Education Expo to learn about some upcoming programs.
Unfortunately, in many schools – especially primary schools – male teachers are a rarity. In some schools, boys are accused of having ‘behaviour’ problems or lacking concentration just because they are not always good at sitting still and listening. This week began with a wonderful BGS Valedictory tradition for our Year 12 boys, Beating the Bounds. It is always one of our highlights of the year as we gather as a school community to recognise this important milestone . Finally, with research consistently showing that engaged students make the best learners, our Crowther Centre has developed an effective learning method to actively involve the boys in their own learning and personal development. The Age sent questions to the 11 most-sought-after schools asking them to detail how student places were allocated.

As you can imagine, significant differences and challenges arise on these programs for our boys. This year we look to continue to forge strong ties with our sister school, Firbank Grammar. The first of our combined events is being held tomorrow with the Year 12s holding a trivia night. Swap days with the Year 7 and 8s proved to be highly successful last year and we look forward to continuing this engagement throughout 2023 as the boys and girls participate in classroom activities for the day. Last week we celebrated the top scholars of 2022 at our Scholars’ Assembly. I would also like to note the academic achievement of two current Year 12 students who were awarded Top of the State Honours in 2022 – Tom Gianatti, Geography and David Yang, Chinese Second Language Advanced.

We discussed that although it is the day of greatest darkness, Solstice is also a time of great hope for the sun’s rebirth. As we embark on this holiday break, I hope you have the opportunity for some downtime as we can all benefit from practising self-care. All in the BGS community have worked hard to keep our boys engaged, active and positive, both academically and emotionally.

As the Year 12 cohort and their families revisit each section of the school on their last official day before exams, we recognise and reflect on their journey from ELC3 – Year 12. Margaret Coyne and I have been honoured to be a part of this journey for some of the students who we proudly waved goodbye to on Monday. On Monday we welcomed back those Year 12s who attended the Junior School for Wilson House Revisited; they spent time visiting teachers and boys in the classrooms and reminisced about their Junior School days. Many commented on ‘how good’ the refurbished spaces looked and how they loved their time in the Junior School and were happy to come back and walk down memory lane.
