🏀 BACKSTORY
Emilio was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Bobby Smith and Celine Manuel. His father returned to the Philippines at 2010, thus becoming a seven-time Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Best Import awardee and Hall of Famer.
Emilio started playing organized basketball at the age of 13. As a freshman and sophomore, he attended St. George's Independent School, where he was named Tennessee's Division II-A Mr. Basketball as the state's private school player of the year. He then helped his team win a class AAA state championship.
For senior high school, he was supposedly committed to Georgia Tech as the No. 31-ranked shooting guard, but decided to decommit and followed his father back to the Philippines. He took up 3rd Year High School again in the local curriculum and became a valuable player for the UST Tigers.
When college came, he enrolled with a course of BS Information Technology at Ateneo de Manila University, with the hopes of playing for the Blue Eagles. He was accepted to the team and won numerous awards over time, even becoming the Captain during his senior year.
After graduation, a bill has been filed at the House of Representatives during the 18th Congress to grant him Filipino citizenship. The bill did not become law, and was refiled in the 19th Congress. The proposed measure, House Bill 6224 was approved by the House of Representatives with a counterpart bill in the Senate. The President signed the measure into law, making him eligible to play for the Philippine national basketball team as a naturalized player.
He officially joined Alab Pilipinas of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). He was named during his first year as the local MVP of the season after getting the gold medal for their team against Taiwan.
He then played for Gilas Pilipinas at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, being part of the team that represented the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games. They won the gold medal after beating Indonesia. Five years later, he returned for the FIBA Asia Cup. The team failed to make the quarterfinals of that tournament.
Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel imported him as a player under Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). He was still an important asset with an agreement to be available for the national team whenever his schedule permitted.
His life solely revolved around basketball but he would always have spare time to explore the world.
