BACKGROUND STORY

Clementine Gail Russo was born into privilege — but never acted like it.

Clementine is the kind of girl who walks into a room and immediately changes the energy — talkative, loud in the best way, always laughing, and somehow still the sharpest in class. Most people don’t expect someone like her to be in maritime school. Even fewer expect her to be a body piercer.

Born and raised in Makati, Clementine comes from a powerful, old-money Spanish family with deep roots in the maritime industry. Her grandfather was a Spanish naval engineer, her grandmother a stern aristocratic Spaniard who upheld traditional values. Her father, Carlos Russo, followed in those footsteps, becoming a merchant marine captain before taking over as CEO of the family’s shipping and logistics empire.

Then there’s her mom — Gwyneth Zobel, a strong-willed, passionate Filipina who completely disrupted the Russo family’s idea of what “proper” looked like. Gwyneth ran away from a inherited family business to open her own tattoo and piercing studio in Manila, which — to everyone’s surprise — became one of the most respected body art studios in the city.

Clementine — or “Cle” to friends — grew up surrounded by two very different worlds: the polished, conservative circles of maritime elites, and the expressive, vibrant culture of body art and creative independence. Her upbringing was privileged, yes — international school, drivers, trips to Spain every summer — but her parents made sure she understood the value of work, self-reliance, and identity.

Everyone expected her to inherit her father’s empire. She surprised them all by choosing to enroll in BS Marine Transportation, not as an heiress, but as a cadet — to build her credibility from the ground up. She turned down the internship at her dad’s firm but chose to live in their family-owned condo in BGC. Instead of joining her mom’s studio, she built her own small space where she could do her work — one that didn’t carry her last name and didn’t rely on it either.

For Clementine, piercing is more than just art — it’s control, focus, and connection. It’s the one space where no one sees her as a Russo, just as Cle. She’s a clean piercer with an eye for precision — something that oddly mirrors her maritime training. Both careers require steadiness, confidence, and trust.

She got the name Clementine because her mom’s pregnancy craving wasn’t the fruit itself, but watching her dad eat it. They thought it was such a cute and iconic story that they decided to pass it on as her name.
