to whom it may concern,

I am delighted to be given this opportunity to write for my dear friend, Artemisia Woods. As you are unfamiliar with her being, let me begin from the start; who she is.

Artemisia Woods was born female on 10 April. She is now 26 years old and is currently a graduate student and research assistant in the astronomy program. Sometimes she also offers consult to people outside her expertise in astronomy.

She has fair skin, due to her habit of staying indoors and exercising outdoors only before the sun’s light bites her skin brown; brown hair coupled with dusted-blue eyes, which may look dull and uninteresting but under the right light and the right enthusiasm, they shine bright. Her height is the average for women in our country. The last time she told me her height was the summer we turned seventeen and she was 161 cm. She might have grown a few more centimetres since then. It is difficult to tell since she loves wearing shoes that add a few centimetres to her height. She is lean and fit as she exercises just enough to stay healthy, reasoning that that is the best course of action as sickness wouldn’t let her think straight.

She is the youngest child, the only daughter with two older brothers. Her family owns a trade business. Though Artemisia once told me it has nothing to do with her as she wasn’t expected to take over, nor is she interested to. Her passion lies somewhere else and that was in the vast and yet-to-be-explored space.

Artemisia’s mind is a mystery; as it is often the case with human beings, she argued. But hers is one of a kind. It is wired as it is with STEM people; it moves methodologically, approaching problems from a detached observer’s viewpoint, attacking conundrums with hard logic, and leading her to the end conclusion. It makes her look cold and merciless at times, especially as she ponders on a problem. Her scepticism runs deep and she may appear pessimistic at times, cynical and her tongue cuts too.

But, as if she has a switch in her head, her everyday-self isn’t as merciless. Granted, the switching is anything but smooth and she can be rather awkward at it, her brake sometimes malfunctions and she crashes the conversation; but she knows to hold off her tongue. Despite her cutting logic, she tries her best to be considerate of other people. It might come as a surprise, but she knows not to judge as she sits and listens to others. After all, science still requires her to keep an open mind to everything. Just take note if you ask for her advice, it might sting as she speaks the truth.

Another surprising side of Artemisia is that she believes in the existence of ghosts and everything supernatural; the opposite of her usual logic as their existence can’t be proven by science (yet?). Artemisia herself never explains why, and her behaviours sometimes can’t be explained by logic either. She has a knack for finding things and unearthing secrets; one that often helps with her side gig as a consultant. However, no one knows exactly how she did that as she answers with vague, inconclusive answers.

Though I might have written lots, it is only a fragment of Artemisia; as I, too, am only an observer of her life. And even though I am blessed to have known her for a lifetime, I believe there are still a lot of her I haven’t seen. so, I hope you’ll spend enough time with her before drawing your own conclusion as to what kind of person she is.

best regard,
