100 Units to mL: U-100 Insulin Syringe Quick Table

100 units to mL on a U-100 insulin syringe is exactly 1 mL. That is one full 1 mL barrel, the largest standard insulin syringe. Every other mark follows the same rule, so divide the units by 100 to get millilitres.

Which barrel holds 100 units

Only the 1 mL barrel. A 0.3 mL barrel tops out at 30 units and a 0.5 mL barrel at 50 units. If what you need to read is past the top mark of your barrel, it takes more than one fill. A 1 cc syringe is the same as a 1 mL syringe, because a cc and a mL are the same volume.

Three ways "100 units" goes wrong

The wrong scale. "100 units is 1 mL" is only true on a U-100 syringe. A U-40 barrel fits 40 units into each mL, so its unit is 0.025 mL. A U-500 barrel fits 500 units into each mL, so its unit is 0.002 mL. Both U-40 and U-100 syringes are on pharmacy shelves in Vietnam, and one chain sells the same brand in an orange U-100 version and a red U-40 version.

Treating units as an amount of drug. A unit on the barrel is a volume mark. What 100 units of liquid holds depends on the concentration in the vial, which is a separate calculation.

Small marks. The 100 unit end is the easy end to read. Accuracy research found much larger errors at the 1 to 5 unit end of the scale, and finer half-unit marks did not fix that.

FAQ

Is 100 units the same as 1 cc?

Yes, on a U-100 syringe. 100 units is 1 mL, and 1 mL is the same volume as 1 cc.

How many units is half a mL?

50 units on a U-100 scale, which is a full 0.5 mL barrel or half of a 1 mL barrel.

Is 100 units a dose?

No. It is a reading of the scale on the syringe. What it holds depends on what is in the vial, and any amount you measure has to come from your own source or a clinician.
