2★ Lance Tendo - Proof to Rule

Taiten: (The Heian Period Clothing… I got to see it with my own eyes again, it was truly elegant and fascinating.) [1]

Oh…?

What a coincidence to run into you here, Lance-kun.

Lance: You came to see the exhibit too, Taiten Takato.

Taiten: I was only stopping by. What were you looking at?

Lance: So a ‘Heian Period Nobles’ pastime, huh? That requires a lot of brain power, which is quite intriguing [2]

Look, The Japanese have been playing “Go” since this era. Is this a Sugoruku…? [3]

Oh, so it’s like a game of Backgammon. Interesting. [4]

These cards with kanji written on them… “Hentsuji”? I wonder what kind of game that is.

Taiten: A game where you create various kanji characters by using left and right radicals to form a single kanji.

For example, from the structure of りっとう(rittou), it can associate with kanji characters such as 別 (betsu), 利 (ri), 刷 (satsu), 削 (saku), and others.

Lance: I see. So whoever remembers more kanji wins, huh? Sounds interesting. Why don’t we try it ourselves?

Taiten: A waste of time. Time is precious. Is competing against you worth my time? [5]

The answer is no, therefore I cannot compete with you.

Lance: That’s a shame.

I thought if I could beat you, you could tell me vital piece of information that you’re hiding

Taiten: Hehe, As a president of a fairly large company. I am obligated to keep it confidential. Whether or not I lose to you, that would be a difficult discussion.

Well then, I shall take my leave.

Lance: He really doesn’t show any signs of weakness.

Translation Note:

[1] this probably was one of the hardest sentences i had to tl bc he said 優婉閑雅 which was a kanji I wasn’t familiar with and had to look up in a dictionary but also said 雅で美しい in the same sentence. But, the Heian Period Clothing he mentioned is linked to the Tower Emblem Event where Taiten and Uryu are wearing a suikan (水干)
[2] Lance described Taiten (or his family) as 平安時代の貴族 as an “Heian Period Nobles/Aristocracy” and I wasn’t very knowledgeable about the Takato Family nor about the Heian Period so I had to ask for some help to TL this properly and Lance was just using the Heian Period Nobles as a metaphor because the Takato Family is well known throughout Nijigao City.
[2] Lance said 頭を使うものが多くて which literally “requires a lot of mental thinking” and first thought that came to mind was “brain power” because Lance was being casual in this conversation too.
[3] a Go (囲碁) is a board game that requires two players to capture more territory, it’s a simpler version of Chess but more complex. The objective of the game is to control more of the board and capture more territory by enclosing areas using your markers, instead of inside the boxes the marker is placed on the inner section of the board (yes i had to search this up lol). A Sugoroku (双六) on the other hand is like a Monopoly, Snake and Ladders or Game of life board game.
[4] Backgammon is another board game that’s moves is based on the dice, you can read about it here
[5] 蹉陀歳月its a 4 character idiom that means its a waste of time.
