When I moved to Shoreditch I had nothing but a mattress. The windows rattled in the wind, but we gave it soul with furniture. No student can afford Mayfair prices, so we hunted retro. Another dragged a chair from Camden. It looked like chaos, but that’s what gave it soul. Chairs with scars feel stronger, and students get that instinctively. I’ve hosted ten people on one sagging retro sofa, and the chairs became mates.

Retro furniture feels natural here, and students rely on it. We found ourselves in Smithers showroom, and the vintage armchairs carried scars I loved. we had to haggle, but it’s the pride different styles of armchairs the living room. We’ve all begged friends for lifts. It’s part of student life. Accent chairs don’t flinch when four people pile on. Brand-new looks boring, but funky chairs grow with you. every stain means another night.

Looking back after twelve months, the cracked window gets forgotten, but the mismatched set still makes you laugh. When you start student life, ignore the fake polish. Choose a funky accent chair, and see how it shapes your memories.
