The name answers with an error and the redirect never runs
The issue comes back every few weeks, and always in the same shape: everything in the account checks out, and visitors receive something that is plainly not a redirect. It keeps coming back because the interface has no means to display it. Each half of the setup is correct on its own, and what is missing is the join between them, which has no tab of its own.
I directed a batch of parked names at the main site last week. Record on the apex, proxied, aimed at an address that goes nowhere, list of destinations uploaded, everything the runbook states. Most of them work. One of them stalls for half a minute and then shows an error page, and I cannot see any difference between that one and the rest. What am I missing here?
Stop looking at the dashboard and read what the name returns to a simple request. The status line handles most of the sorting on its own: a code from the gateway family means the edge took the request, went looking for something behind it, and found nothing. That is already the answer to the central question. A setting that delivers answers at the edge and never reaches an origin, so it cannot time out against one, and a code from that family is proof it did not run for that request.
The registrar side is worth one look as well, because a name that never finished moving serves whatever the registrar displays. Often that is a page offering to sell it, and it usually answers as though everything is healthy, so a check that asks only whether the name is up passes cleanly. The evidence exists only outside the account: from the inside, a zone that is still waiting looks exactly like a zone that is live.
The three subtle ways this appears, and the one request that distinguishes them: cloudflare redirect rule does not fire
Questions like this are worth recording because the answer extends broadly. One plain request, read from the first line, tells you which of the three you are in, and the fix follows from the answer rather than from another hour in the interface.
