Omen’s Gossip and Chitchat

Dyna

Woe is you. Foe of all by blood ties. What didst thee bringeth oth'r than shed blood?

“I have heard rumors about her when I snuck into some bars and hotels for Adventures to spread the tale of our people. I have informed Grandma, of course, but she was not all too happy to hear about her. Something about foul blood and a Devouring Beast.”

“Queen Arianis had said those who carry the blood of the Devourer are evil- Villains of all beings. Those words are rich coming from us, but we do know better than most. She does not look the part with the ones she is tied it, the Great Devourer, yet I dare say she looks amicable. Guillable, näive. I wonder if those species share the same blood ties we do as Devils.”

A descendant of the Great Devourer, whatever those two buzzwords truly mean. All I know is that she is just another meatheaded girl who is easily tricked and knows nothing of this world, just another one… Whatever a Great Devourer is and why Queen Arianis seems too keen on expressing how evil it is, doesn’t seem to be in that girl.

Cyrus

Stench of blood. A soul corrupted and a mind defiled, violated by merry love and youthful mirth. A fate most rightly earned.

"A strange man. I think I have seen around with another girl, staring in the distance towards our people. His gaze was focused on us, but we did well in keeping our distance. He has “that” smell on him. It is not a good thing to associate with such a person."

“A strange man who smells of Strigas. A soul-rotting foul smell comes from him. I wonder why is that? Hm. Not my business I’m afraid. Better to keep my distance lest I’m pulled into unfortunate events I would rather not partake in.”

There is only one reason someone has this smell: They have been fooled by a Strigoi. Whatever is his problem, it is not MINE or Carnival’s problem. Falling in petty squabbles against fellow debirukind for another näive and passionate bachelor who was bitten by a Striga is not worth the hassle. Better warn my sister lest she decides to help him.

Byelana

A fate most blessed and a life well earned. Ruin! Ruin! Ruin upon the heavens! O'er the rabble, as blessings are held in scorn!

“Grandma came to… vent I think? About this girl who suffered too much? It is rare to see Grandma talking fondly of the living, even less when that person is not on their death doors. She sees that girl as kindred spirits, maybe?”

“Queen Arianis seems fond of this girl for some reason. Hm. May I speak freely? She seems… nice. Not everyone can endure these trials and tribulations and survive to tell the tale. I can see why Queen Arianis is fond of this… Byelana. To think those people would take her blessing for granted and ruin her life… Yes, I can see that. As we who herald the end, it is natural that we see kinship in one who brings new rebirths.”

A girl should not receive the treatment she got. We Debirus are used to it, to us the shunning, ostracization, and atrocities are yet another way of life, but for a girl so pure… it should not happen. We omen have no usage for her gifts and powers. We announce death and the end of life, but we respect one so blessed that she renews life once it expires. Should she want housing, we will be more than happy to have her in our elegies.

When the Ashes are two, a flame alighteth. Thou rt' Ash, and fire befits thee, of course.

“I… do not know what she is. She is unlike everything I have seen. Queen Arianis seems fond of her and of that other guy, for some reason, but I fail to understand why. She is strange, different.”

The villains of life we are not. For all that breathes shall one day perish and decay, and renewal cometh through withered hands and barren earth. Who else but they who kindle from ashes when naught else can be kindled are our truest friends, and yet, our mortal foes as well?

“A phoenix?”

Ferdinando

Our duty one day shall be solemnly fulfilled. He awaits the hour when carrion decays, when bones turn to stone. Only then, and only then, when the promised end draws nigh, shall we sing him to his eternal rest.

“I have to go meet him. I am so scared. Will he judge me for my lack of skills? For my youthfulness? I am afraid. I don’t want to be seen as unfit for my life as an Omen.”

“One of the reasons we stay in Fharamun as far as I know. We await the day when he and other such Lords die, so we can welcome him into the eternal world, and welcome him into our Ancestry. He has been alive for a long time, since two queens ago. I’m afraid that I may be the one who will sing him an elegy… I don’t want that. I would prefer Queen Arianis to do that. I am far too weak, too young to fulfill such duties even if my Future will be greater than I.”

An example of what a Debiru can become. Raw power and intent, a killer and a warrior, some would say he is the epitome of what all of us should aspire to be. I respect him, of course, he is a Lord, but I’m afraid of my omen duties to him. He should have been my betters, and I’m afraid that I won’t measure up to them.

The bells toll not when thy heart doth cease, but when the tapestry of thy fate is complete. Live well in death, yet ever remember: When thy true hour arrives, an Omen shall befall thee and all whom thou dost cherish.

“I think we have met each other with a passing glance. He does not seem the part and does not feel like a Lord. Maybe his name and that of an Old Lord are just coincidences? Yet we don’t believe in those, I think. Strange.”

“He is not that older than me, as far as I can see. The name En is of an old lord, but I do not know if the Omens had sung for that one… That’s a strange thing, is it not? The name of an old lord in a body so young. It is ill-fitting, almost like a joke.”

Maybe he is just an heir with too much weight on his shoulders. Or maybe not. I do not know. He does not feel old.

???

Tales of forgotten deities, tales of forgone gods. All too recent, all too vivid. Yet tales they are not. That is not dead which can eternal lie.

“I have been taught to avoid making deals with strange entities, things that our people fought valiantly in the past. Things that should not be. I know my tales well, well enough to see that this is not a creature you should approach, not a being that should stay alive.”

Morrigan

Cursed child of man. Cursed offspring of blood tainted to ascend. Not from a mother’s womb delivered, yet given life all the same. Where shall thy humanity cease? Where shall thy journey lead thee?

“Grandma said to try and get her into the Carnival if we ever met. I want to meet her, see if the Cockatrices are as fearsome as the tales say.”

“A cockatrice. Even mother is apprehensive with one around. I have never seen one, much less heard of one. We do our best not to let scriptures and sheets with their tales lie around for too long. It brings foul luck and ill spirits to our tents. We do not hate her, and her species, but acknowledgment brings it power, power to bring contempt.”

We have no problems with her, but we are not comfortable singing about her or writing about her species. Cockatrices invite tragedies for a reason, even if they are like us in that regard. Heralds of Death all the way.

Lance

A twist of Fate. The dawn of a new life, blazing embers that consumed his father to become a bonfire. Marvel, what a tapestry might be woven from such threads?

“I found a business card on the ground with him on it. If I ever need someone investigated…”

“He smells like that girl, I think. A phoenix, some people say. I have nothing much to say. What he is trying to achieve is good, but our carnivals operate by different rules than society… anyway, I think what he wants to achieve is good. This is all that matters.”

He is kind of cute, although. I may pay him to keep tabs on my sister.

Sa’ad

Through great suffering, an empire fell. Now the survivors must gnaw on dust and death, just as we did ‘fore..

“I have seen his machine, flying high in the skies. Away from everyone…”

“Another empire fell, I can’t say I have any sympathy to spare for him. We have gone through the same and far worse. Although if he brings war to those lands, more of our kin may appear, and we can make more performances for those of us who fall… Hm, he may bring some good for us, after all.”

Arthur:

Accursed life. The ancient tale of weaving lives doth persist within thee; squander it not.

“I have heard about “dolls”. Some omens carnivals still practice that art. I can’t say I have ever seen one.”

“Mother is interested in his products, but we hardly have money to spare on such frivolous things.”

Emiline

Old as time, young as a seedling. Nature, for all its caretakers, is but a reflection of those who tend it.

“Dryads are not unheard of, just painfully elusive and out of reach. To think we have one nearby… but it is not as if we can meet anytime. She is just as elusive as her kind, but closer to us than the rest of it.”

That house looks abandoned. I wonder if I could “borrow” it…

Alexandra

The night of yore shall be consumed by the flames of the morrow, as the old adage speaks. This is true, for one day bright righteousness shall supplant the cold cynicism of night.

“I don’t like her that much. Thinks she is better than us by running away and starting her own thing.”

“Things could have been handled better between us, that much is true. I hope one day we can make amends and start all over. She doesn’t seem like she will hold a grudge”

My dear sister, my other half. I dislike the path you have taken, and think you could have brought more good had you stayed, but I refuse to disavow your path in life.

Alicia

Pride cometh before the fall. And there is no pride greater than that of a mere curb who deemeth himself a king. Fleeting are the powers and strength that royalty bestows.

“Adventuring is not my jam. If they are so keen on “adventuring”, they should abandon the big cities and live in the wilderness like us, moving from place to place. It feels cheap to call yourself an adventurer and live in those walled places.”

“I find it commendable she wants to fight in the frontlines, but I find her happiness haught. What is the use of a king that cannot mourn with its subjects and feel the great sadness of life?”

Hm. She is the type of person my reckless sister may gravitate to. I may have to keep an eye on her, Lexi getting into more trouble than she already is will bring me no good.

Liv

The inventions of today are the relics of yesterday, yet we all know that the artifacts we seek rest deep within our very bones.

“I like her stuff. I wish we could get our tools upgraded. I know Mother had hers upgraded. It would be so cool…”

“I have no money, but I know where I would spend if I had it. Think about it, our superior tools with magi-tech upgrades. It would bring it to a new level of power. Aaah the woes of wealth.”

I already have a weapon. I don’t think she can provide me with much.
