you will never attend school with the rat, your childhood friend
ninth grade, the first day of school, she comes in looking very different than the year before
her uniform barely fits—her cheeks are nearly as red as her hair, the buttons barely holding on
she tells you that her parents couldn't get a new shirt for her after her growth spurt, she has to dress like this for a week until it comes in
hand her your jacket, telling her to wear that so that people don't stare as much
notably avoid looking at her, blushing yourself
she laughs and jokes about how maybe she should keep this uniform if you liked it so much
tell her not to treat herself with so little respect
she says it's okay, she'd only wear it for you anyways
before you can get her to say what she means by that, class starts
she keeps looking at you out of the corner of her eye and smirking as you become more and more confused
