How a VC Can Affect Your Heart
A lot of people experience occasional PVCs and have no issues. If they happen frequently, PVCs may weaken your heart and increase the chance of suffering from heart failure.
A bundle of fibers in the top right portion of your heart (the sinoatrial, or SA, node) typically controls your heart rhythm. Electrical signals travel from this node to the lower heart chambers or ventricles.
Causes
PVCs occur when the electrical impulse that normally triggers your heartbeat at the Sinus Node (also called the Sinoatrial or the SA node) does not. Instead, the impulse is generated in a different area of your heart, the ventricles, and causes a wrongly timed beat. These extra beats, called ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation, may feel like your heart skipped a beat or is fluttering. They can occur rarely, causing no symptoms, but they could also happen frequently enough to impact your quality of life. If they are very frequent or cause dizziness, weakness or fatigue, your doctor could treat them with medication.
PVCs are generally safe and do not increase your risk of developing heart disease. In time, repeated PVCs can weaken the heart muscle. This is especially relevant if they are triggered by a heart disease such as dilated cardiomyopathy arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, which can lead to symptomatic heart failure.
The signs of PVCs include feeling like your heart beats slower or it flutters. You may feel breathless. The fluttering may be more noticeable when you exercise or consume certain foods or drinks. People who suffer from chronic stress or anxiety can have more PVCs, and some drugs like amiodarone digoxin, and cocaine can increase the chance of developing them.
If you experience occasional PVCs your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes and medications. If they're a frequent occurrence, you may need to stay clear of certain drinks and foods, such as caffeine and alcohol. You can also reduce your stress and get plenty of sleep and exercise.
If you've got a lot of PVCs, your doctor may suggest a medical procedure known as radiofrequency catheter ablation. It destroys the cells that cause them. Electrophysiologists are the ones who perform this procedure. It is generally successful in treating the PVCs and reducing symptoms, however it does not stop them from recurring in the future. In some cases it can increase the risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AFib) which could lead to stroke. It is not common, but it could be life-threatening.
Symptoms
Premature ventricular contractions, also known as PVCs, can cause your heart seem to flutter or skip a beat. These extra heartbeats are usually harmless, but you should talk to your doctor in case you experience frequent episodes or other symptoms such as dizziness or weakness.
The normal electrical signals start in the sinoatrial area, which is located in the upper right-hand part of the heart. They then move to the lower chambers, or ventricles, which pump blood. The ventricles then contract to force blood into the lungs. They then return to the center to begin the next cycle of pumping. A PVC begins at a different spot, the Purkinje fibers are located in the left-hand side of the heart.
When PVCs happen and the heart is affected, it may feel as if it's racing or pounding. If you've experienced a few episodes and no other symptoms, your doctor will probably not treat you. If you've got a lot of PVCs the doctor may suggest that you undergo an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor your heartbeat for 24 hours. They may also suggest wearing a Holter monitor that records your heart rhythm over time to see how many PVCs you have.
If you've suffered a heart attack in the past or have cardiomyopathy -which alters the way the heart pumps blood - must be aware of their PVCs and talk to a cardiologist about lifestyle changes. These include abstaining from alcohol, caffeine and smoking, managing anxiety and stress and getting enough sleep. A cardiologist may prescribe beta blockers to slow the heartbeat.
Even if there aren't any other signs it is still recommended to have PVCs examined by an expert in cardiology if they occur frequently. These extra heartbeats may signal a problem with the structure of your lungs or heart, and if they happen often enough, it could weaken the heart muscle. But the majority of people suffering from PVCs don't have any issues. They want to know if the rapid heartbeats, or the skipping of heartbeats is normal.
Diagnosis
PVCs can feel like fluttering or skipped heartbeats, especially when they're intense or frequent. Patients who have a lot of them might feel like they're going to faint. They can also occur with exercising, but most athletes who experience them don't have any problems with their health or heart. PVCs may show up in tests like an electrocardiogram or a Holter monitor. These patches contain sensors that record electrical impulses from your heart. A cardiologist may also use an ultrasound echocardiogram to study the heart.
Most of the time, a doctor will be able to tell whether someone is suffering from PVCs from a patient's history and physical examination. Sometimes however, they might only be able to detect PVCs when they examine a patient for another reason, like following an accident or a surgery. Ambulatory ECG monitors can detect PVCs, as well as other arrhythmias. They can be used to detect cardiac disease if there is any reason to be concerned.

PVCs are more frequent as you age, and may occur more often during exercising.
A doctor should perform an ECG and an echocardiogram for a patient who suffers from frequent and painful PVCs to rule out structural heart diseases. The doctor will also perform an exercise stress test in order to determine if the additional heartbeats are caused by physical exercise. A heart catheterization, cardiac MRI or nuclear perfusion study can be done to look for other causes for the additional beats.
The majority of people who suffer from PVCs are not affected and can live a normal life. They may increase the risk of developing dangerous heart rhythm disorders particularly if they happen in certain patterns. In certain cases, it means that the heart muscle becomes weaker and is unable to pump blood throughout your body.
A healthy, regular diet and plenty of exercise can help reduce your chances of developing PVCs. Avoid foods that are high in fat and sodium, and limit your consumption of tobacco and caffeine. Stress and sleep are also crucial. Some medicines can also increase the risk of getting PVCs. If you take any of these medicines it is crucial that you follow the advice of your doctor regarding healthy eating and exercising as well as taking your medication.
Studies of patients who had an excessive amount of PVCs (that's more than 20% of their total heart beats) discovered that they had a higher rate of arrhythmia-induced cardiomyopathy. Certain people may require a heart transplant.
