The most effective robot vacuum will vacuum and mop your floors without your involvement. It will also leave them spotless. Its affordable price and high-end features (such as dirt detectors) are a plus.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've tested. They feature motors that are top of the class and can handle up to 5,500 Pascals. Like other premium iRobots (including the most powerful model) they utilize intelligent mapping to design precise floorplans that avoid obstacles such as cords and furniture legs. They also feature a feature called carpet boost which boosts the robot's power when it sees the presence of dirt on the carpet in order to get it clean quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests of floors with no carpet, and they are particularly adept in cleaning hair from dogs. However, they do have some flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's thus susceptible to become stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great deal, especially if your office or home has a lot of bare flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also very quiet and can work while you're at work or school. The only thing it doesn't have that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you're in need of it, the mopping pad can be swapped for a wet one in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and effective at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with an impressive suction system and a self-emptying bin. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, although it's not as effective as some rivals in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensor technology that can avoid obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the patterns of your home over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. The app lets you customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average when compared to similar models.

If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to remove and extend its mops. This will help prevent cross contamination. Its flex arm is great to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. However, it doesn't have the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could sweep the entire house with just 66 percent of its battery remaining. It also did an excellent job of cleaning a mix of floors and rooms that had various flooring types, such as certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was top notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog turds, socks, shoes and cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has an intuitive mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that it's an eerily noisy device, which can be problematic if you run it in the morning before work or in the evening as you try to fall asleep.

If you're willing to put up with a bit more noise and a little more cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you get rid of your chores. The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out the floor plan and detect obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its top rivals. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time, although this wasn't quite foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has an attribute known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house based on how dirty those areas are.

For larger houses it's worth looking for models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home by using the app or voice commands. A stairway mode is beneficial if you have number of furniture. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be extremely useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than the price suggests. It is a great job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses an oscillating motion that cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or organize a spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas to improve performance. The app also grants access to a host of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
