They say when you stare into the abyss sometimes the abyss stares back, sometimes the abyss is scared of what it sees. Liren was a strange kid at the best of time, born as the heir to a shrine family in a strange city where the supernatural bleeds into reality, it's no wonder something went wrong. Nobody noticed the true extent of the problem until the kid was already 6, at the age when he was supposed to start learning the rituals of the family an accident befell the shrine, among the screams of kids and adults alike Liren remained completely calm, lost in the spectacle of all the cause and effect going on. In the aftermath he was the only one left unscathed, more curious about what happened than shaken, his questions about the nature of those happenings went unanswered.
He was shipped off to a branch of the family that long abbandoned the path of worship when things started getting put of hand, nobody was sure what was more dangerous, him or the monsters that apparently only left him alone. His life after that was relatively normal, as far as events go, normal school with normal people, a normal family, everything was always just a bit wrong to him, as if something was missing. This odd normality made him obsessed with finding the hidden sides of things. His family kept telling him that nothing strange happened in his youth, that he had an overactive immagination, what was more painful was that they were sure that was the case so he didn't feel them lie when they said it. He never gave up, Liren involuntarily built a reputation as the guy you go to if you want to find something, his innate talent to find out connections was used mostly to dig into as many secrets as he could find, the people he helped were mostly collateral.
His family provided him with distractions in the hope he would get some normal interests and stop breaking into the evidence room of the police station, it only worked to a degree, it made hiding his real interests easier, pretending to keep up with the trends was a small price to pay to be able to read his occult books and forums in peace. Of course his obsession had consequences but he adapted fast, he learned many things from both sides of the law, mostly without the consent of either, but he was smart enough to learn at a distance, most of the time. The news that he was going back to Kageoka was unexpected, his current family had reached a breaking point, but they could have just kicked him out, he already had several hideouts prepared for that, still it was a welcome opportunity.
The main family didn't do well in the meantime, between more accidents and strange occurences, and rampant technological and economic progress, nobody remained in the city to welcome him. Now back as the only heir of an extinct clan, Liren doesn't really care for the past, he only cares for the proof to his childhood memories. His only connection to his old life is a cheerful kid that visited the shrine often, Masami was one of the few things he missed of Kageoka, despite not being one to get attched to people. His instict tells him that kid is still in the city, and some supernatural events are not enough to get in the way of reconnecting.
The moment Liren stepped back into the city everything felt right again, like it was meant to be. Everything felt clearer, almost overwhelming, which lead to him wandering into a place where he shouldn't have. His Awakening was surprisingly not that traumatic, when strange creatures attacked him in a dark alley a voice in his head simply told him to eat instead of running, and he felt like he should. The strange powers felt strangely natural to use, and the voice was cheerfully commenting on how much knowledge these creatures would lead to.

Liren's Idolon looks almost exactly like him at first glance, but some details are wrong or unnatural, sharper theet, slitted eyes, unnatural movements, it changes shape but it's as if it struggles to keep a proper human form always getting something wrong, It seems to have a malleable form. It doesn't have a name, at least it never introduced itself with one, it jokingly refers to itself as "Liren Too", Liren calls it "Abyss". It's personality is also similar, Liren's endless hunger for knowledge and meaning is translated into hunger for Idea World creatures in Abyss, the similarities would be even more apparent if Liren hadn't learned to pretend to be normal. When under Incarnation Liren becomes more expressive.
The true nature of Spawn is a fragment of a bigger entity. A primordial god that created several bloodlines for the sole pupouse of gathering more power and knowledge. The barrier cut off the connection and the free Spawns had no humans to infuence. The weakening barrier in Kageoka allowed Liren to be found by his spawn, but instead of being absorbed and losing his free will the kid made a connection and the Spawn gained free will and a copy of the kid's personality.
Liren adapted to his newfound powers as if he always had them, treating the strange way he can interact with the world as if it was matter of course and sometimes forgetting that "normal" people can't just float or walk on walls. His clothes are lined with hidden pockets full of random junk and segmented in ways that make them easy to control with his powers, they would be unwieldy for anyone else, or at least for someone without his nature.
Life is somwhere between a constellation and a tapestry to him, everything is connected in some way, and the connections can be manipulated, you just need to know how. Despite knowing how to make or break connections easily that doesn't mean he has the means to do so, after all he learned pretty fast that people don't like it when you look too hard inside them, and he is not good at dealing with the social aspect of reading people, his understanding often leaves him an outsider but he still tries being helpful. He hides his quirky view of the world pretending to be jaded but the facade crumbles quickly under scrutiny, and his odd remarks on situations as they unfold could be considered as "chuuni" by some. Often mentions strings, chains, bands and other types of connecting implements, as well as the act of unraveling to discern the true nature of things.
The supernatural world feels like his element and he is intent on studying and solving all the mysteries he can find, he understads that some Idea World Residents are dangerous and need to be dealt with but severing the connection would be too much of a waste so he doesn't want to directly help the student council in sealing the other world.
