Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Working Group Meeting

On July 18, 2023, AMCHAM held its first meeting of the Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Working Group under the leadership of Mr. Anil Bhatia, Chairman of AMCHAM's Energy Committee and Vice President and Managing Director of Emerson India. The meeting was held at the Emerson office in Noida and was attended by representatives from a number of U.S. companies with operations in India.

The discussion focused on the role of CCUS in India's energy transition. As India has updated its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to include a target of 50% of its total installed capacity from non-fossil-based energy sources by 2030 and a 45% reduction in emission intensity by the same year, CCUS has become an increasingly important technology for reducing emissions.

The meeting participants discussed the potential for CCUS to be used in a variety of applications in India, including power generation, oil and gas production, and industrial emissions. They also discussed the challenges and opportunities associated with the development and deployment of CCUS technology in India.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from the participants to work together to promote the development and deployment of CCUS technology in India.

Here are some additional details from the meeting:

  1. Mr. Bhatia highlighted the importance of CCUS for India's energy transition. He noted that CCUS can help India to meet its NDC targets and to achieve net zero emissions by 2070.
  2. The participants discussed the potential for CCUS to be used in a variety of applications in India. They identified power generation, oil and gas production, and industrial emissions as the most promising sectors for CCUS deployment.
  3. The participants also discussed the challenges and opportunities associated with the development and deployment of CCUS technology in India. They identified the lack of government support, the high cost of technology, and the need for public education as some of the key challenges.
  4. The meeting concluded with a commitment from the participants to work together to promote the development and deployment of CCUS technology in India. They agreed to share information and expertise, to collaborate on research and development projects, and to advocate for government policies that support CCUS. https://amchamindia.)com/carbon-capture-utilization-and-storage-ccus-working-group-meeting/
