Introduction
Welcome to /u/'s yuri game recommendation list! This is a compilation of yuri games that serve as a good introduction to both the yuri genre and games. While this list is intended to help newcomers find their footing in the genre, these games are great for veteran fans too.
The games on this list were nominated by many anons with different tastes and views, so it is not intended to be an objective list of the "best" yuri games out there. The initial list is supposed to be a sort of "evergreen" content that will always be relevant (with the exception of the Gacha section), but the list will eventually be updated as more games come out.
To make the recommendations easier to follow, games will be tagged by genre and certain other factors. That way you can more precisely search for what you are most interested in (e.g. RPGs, selectable protagonist gender, games for people new to the yuri genre etc.). If you are not sure what a term or tag actually means, I recommend checking out the Glossary at the end of this guide.
If you are interested in modding some of your games to be more yuri, want to learn how to emulate games or if you need more extensive yuri game databases I recommend checking out the Other Resources section. It provides links for these topics.
It is recommended to view this guide in Dark Mode. The color choices are adjusted around that setting. Click the Moon/Sun symbol at the very bottom of this site to switch between the modes.
Note: The games are NOT listed in order of quality or relevance.
Recommendations (by Tags)
The following list is is divided by tags. Click on the tag that interests you, but be aware that every game has several tags and thus will appear repeatedly. If you need details on the definition of a tag go to the Glossary. Note: The games are not listed in any kind of order of quality or relevance. Newcomer tags don't mean experienced people can't love the games too.

Recommendations (Games)
Baldur's Gate 3
Synopsis:
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a story-rich, party-based RPG set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons, where your choices shape a tale of fellowship and betrayal, survival and sacrifice, and the lure of absolute power.
Recommendation:
BG3 might be the most important game of the 2020s. That is a sentiment many people share despite it only having been out for a couple of years. The Early Access has been around basically since the beginning of the decade though and impressed even with just Act 1 at the time. In summary, it just has the most freedom, quality and cinematic atmosphere any CRPG has ever conjured up. One might prefer other gameplay styles or other stories more, but it is hard to deny BG3 has a lot going for it. The variety of ways to play, the customisation of your player character, the ability to play Origin characters that otherwise would be party members and the many, many choices and endings really make it a fun experience even on your 4th playthrough.
It is beneficial that BG3 does not require the player to have played BG1 & BG2 or even ever engaged with the Dungeons & Dragons franchise whatsoever. Those who have been consuming those things will be rewarded even more of course. The game features several difficulties, with the Explorer difficulty being so easy that newcomers to CRPGs or games in general will be able to cruise by relatively unperturbed.
Yuri content:
Whether one plays the self-insert Tav, the Dark Urge or one of the Origin characters, romance is completely unrestricted by sex. This means any female romance option is available to the player character. The game features extensive romantic plotlines, a few one-night stands and yes, actual animated sex scenes. In general the game features nudity, which can be toggled off right alongside the sex scenes.
As a side-effect of the no restriction situtation, companions and lovers are unfortunately generally bisexual. It is possible for them to flirt with each other if taken along in the party at the same time, however, companions will not romance each other even if rejected by the player. Playing an Origin character will include unique romance dialogue for every combination!

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Synopsis:
Embark on a journey to a realm overrun by demons in a new epic RPG from the creators of the critically acclaimed Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Explore the nature of good and evil, learn the true cost of power, and rise as a Mythic Hero capable of deeds beyond mortal expectations.
Recommendation:
Wrath of the Righteous is the essence of what a oldschool CRPG should be, except it is modern and better made. This game has so many varied routes and outcomes to choose from, each really empowering your personal fantasy. Want to be a holy warrior who ascends to godhood or a chill poet that sings the song of her people to scare demons back to the Abyss? Maybe you value the law so much that you will join the devils themselves to impose a true lawful rule on the world and conquer your enemies with objective logical decisions. Corrupt your comrades or help them rise above their faults. Romance the power hungry cannibal spidercat lady or the repentant succubus who locks herself in jail so she won't jump you. Pick from dozens upon dozens of classes only to realise that you can buff yourself out of any situation anyway. Try to get the secret ending with the most convoluted conditions known to humanity.
And above all, have fun. Even if the mechanics can be confusing or hard to approach for the first couple of hours. It's worth the trouble.
Yuri content:
There are three women that can be romanced by a female protagonist, all aligned to a different moral alignment that is better suited to different Mythic Paths (story routes) you can take. Their romances also have good and evil variations each! The epilogues can vary wildly depending on your choices and how you approach each romance too.
But if 3 is not enough for you... perhaps check out the yuri mod list for more romance options.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire
Synopsis:
Pursue a rogue god over land and sea in the sequel to the multi-award-winning RPG Pillars of Eternity. Captain your ship on a dangerous voyage of discovery across the vast unexplored archipelago region of the Deadfire. Bend the world to your will, as you explore the depths of infinite possibilities, including detailed character customization, total freedom of exploration, and more meaningful choices at every turn.
Recommendation:
If Pillars of Eternity revived the mostly dead isometric CRPG genre, Pillars 2 build on that foundation and made it actually good. It is a vast improvement to the first game, not least of all because it actually adds romance. Same sex romance at that (why else would it be on this list?)! PoE II is very focused on freedom of choice and exploration, letting the player truly do things their own way. This causes some foibles, but does not make it any less enjoyable. This game is not especially newcomer friendly in sense of depth of mechanics and difficulty, but with just some investment it could soon click for most people.
Yuri content:
There are two romancable female party members, who can also romance each other (not at the same time as the player unfortunately). Romance is not a major element of the game, but it is still nice to have.

But really... you want that poly relationship with both of them, don't you? Triple yuri is definitely best. There may be some way to get that for you.
Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader
Synopsis:
Begin your adventure aboard your personal, giant voidship, traveling between the multitude of systems within the Koronus Expanse, a barely charted and incredibly perilous region of space. Despite being considered a backwater of the Imperium, this region encompasses an enormous stretch of the void, filled with dangerous creatures and prodigious opportunities for profit and exploration.
Recommendation:
In the grimdark future there is nothing but CRPG goodness. At least that's true for Rogue Trader, a game that takes the overdramatic setting of Warhammer 40k and does something interesting with it for once. Based on the similarily named "Rogue Trader" campaign, one of the oldest W40k modules, this game plays fast and loose with the player as a Rogue Trader, an Imperial Agent actually allowed to make friends and trade with aliens. Of course it turns out that a major threat emerges once again and your new crew has to fix it. At least it will be fun this time. If you are unfamiliar with the setting, don't worry, the game has plenty of informative ways to convey they grimdorkness of Warhammer to you. Thankfully it retains Owlcat's penchant for letting the player do whatever they want and make it somehow cool, so you can take some truly out there routes to solve the crisis.
Much like Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, this game is a hard entry into CRPGs, but it is certainly more streamlined and approachable than the former. The heavily involved social side of this game is also something rather unique for a 40k game. After all there is even romance.
Yuri content:
Unfortunately your options are a bit limited, but you get two feisty female companions to romance in the base game and with Void Shadows expansion there is another deadly lady that might get amorous with a daring Rogue Trader. That being said, one of the romance options is an Eldar, so don't expect her to actually touch a filthy Mon-keigh woman like you directly.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Synopsis:
It is four thousand years before the Galactic Empire and hundreds of Jedi Knights have fallen in battle against the ruthless Sith. You are the last hope of the Jedi Order. Can you master the awesome power of the Force on your quest to save the Republic? Or will you fall to the lure of the dark side?
Recommendation:
It's Star Wars. By Bioware. With the first ever lesbian only love interest. You owe it to yourself to at least try! Kotor is a classic for a reason and while the gameplay and graphics have suffered a little from being ancient, this game still holds up. Even if you know not a single thing about Star Wars other than the name, this game will do well enough to explain everything you need to know.
If you somehow haven't been spoiled on the game's infamous twist... congrats.
Yuri content:
There is one lesbian romance option, Juhani. Due to some coding issues her romance is incredibly hard to complete though, so I recommend this guide. Of course you could always check out some mods to help out this old game be better at the gay stuff.

Star Wars: The Old Republic (MMO)
Synopsis:
STAR WARS: The Old Republic is a free-to-play MMORPG that puts you at the center of your own story-driven saga. Play as a Jedi, Sith, Bounty Hunter, or one of many other iconic STAR WARS roles in the galaxy far, far away over three thousand years before the classic films.
Recommendation:
Despite being an MMO this is basically just a single-player sequel to Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2. You can play it alone from start to finish without issue and it provides a fulfilling game experience like that. Many classes, races and storylines to explore on both the Light and Dark side, but also a lot of older game hurdles to contend with. The writing is decent, way above MMO standards and with the expansions they added romance options. To anyone who has ignored this because it is an MMO, give it a chance. Especially if you are a Kotor fan. It STILL gets updated in the year of 2025, so there is that too.
Yuri content:
Every class/story path you choose now has romance options and there are no gender restrictions. The flavor varies between the Light and Dark side factions, but as the romances only truly start in the expansions you will have quite a bit of game to go through before it gets romantic.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Synopsis:
One person is all that stands between humanity and the greatest threat it’s ever faced. Relive the legend of Commander Shepard in the highly acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Includes single-player base content and over 40 DLCs from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 games, including promo weapons, armors and packs — remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD.
Experience an amazingly rich and detailed universe where your decisions have profound consequences on the action and the outcome.
Recommendation:
The Mass Effect Trilogy might well be the most acclaimed sci-fi game series of all time, despite the occasional three colored bumps in the road. Whether you like RPGs, third person shooters or just really enjoy the dialogue wheel, Mass Effect has it all and more. This is peak Bioware and the remaster has only made it smoother. All three games in one package and without the hassle of having to buy story integral DLCs separately! What a deal.
ME is known for its choice based story and incredible crew members as well as cool set pieces and fun combat. There is nothing quite like it. No, Andromeda doesn't count.
The lower dificulties are perfect for people new to games who want to slowly learn and have a mostly cinematic experience.
Yuri content:
Each game introduces new love interests, but from the very first game there is a female crew member to romance for fem!Shep. Maintaining romances between games is a little more tricky, on the account of the fact that some aren't crew members in all three games... a minor hurdle I'm sure. You can cheat and mend relationships, so don't feel too boxed in by your first choice.
Of course if some of the inexplicable hetero women on your ship catch your eyes there might be some mods to help out with that.

Dragon Age (series)
Synopsis:
The first game in the series, Dragon Age: Origins, follows the story of a recent recruit to a legendary order of warriors known as the Grey Wardens. Their mission is to save the kingdom of Ferelden from being overrun by the Darkspawn, a monstrous race of subterranean-dwelling beings who swarm the surface world every few hundred years in a movement known as a Blight.
Its sequel Dragon Age II is centered around the eldest child of the Hawke family, a Blight refugee who moves their family to their mother's home city of Kirkwall in The Free Marches. There, over the course of approximately seven years, they begin as a criminal and work their way up the city's power structure to eventually become the Champion of Kirkwall. As such, in the midst of crisis and political unrest, they go on to help make decisions that influence all of Thedas.
The third installment, Dragon Age: Inquisition, centers on the Inquisition, an organization tasked with restoring peace and order to Thedas, which is suffering from multiple wars and being ravaged by a demonic invasion from beyond the mortal realm over a decade after the events of the first game. The Herald of Andraste, who later becomes the Inquisitor, is the only individual who can seal the rifts that bring demons to Thedas, due to a mysterious magical mark on their hand.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard centers on Rook who was recruited by Varric Tethras to help him stop the antagonist, also known as the elven trickster god Fen'Harel, from bringing down the Veil. While disrupting the Trickster's ritual, they accidentally unleash two imprisoned elven gods – Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain – who then wreak havoc across Thedas with the Blight in an attempt to conquer the world. Rook, supported by companions and various factions, sets out to stop these members of the elven pantheon from achieving their goals.
Bonus: Dragon Age: The Last Court, was a browser game made by Failbetter Games, the creators of Fallen London and takes place right before the events of Inquisition. It's a text based adventure game where you inherit a small piece of land as the new Marquis of Seralt. It is your job to make your town thrive and deal with both intrigue and the supernatural. It even has romances.
Unfortunately the game was discontinued after 6 years and can't be played anymore... or can it? Some dedicated fans remade the entire game in Twine and put it on itch.io!
Recommendation:
The Dragon Age franchise is vast and rich, has evolved a lot over the years with highs and lows. People are basically split about every single game after Origins, some loving or hating each installment. And they by no means always fall into the same camp. That aside, it's a long spanning franchise that always tries new things and has a heavy focus on your party and relationships while giving you a decent action movie plot in a fantasy setting. The gameplay has gotten considerably more approachable over time, especially on lower difficulties, but Origins in particular can still be very clunky. Letting you pause and go into tactical mode is a feature in most of these games still, which can be helpful.
Dragon age has become a multimedia franchise, with books, TV shows and comics. Some of these storylines and characters will even be referenced in the games, which is cool. You don't need to know anything outside the games to enjoy them though. There used to be a Dragonkeep feature that lets you transfer your choices between games, though it is gone now. Now you can mostly select your past choices in the games directly, though that is a little awkward. The narratives stand on their own though, it just adds some flavor, like what NPC will be helping you etc.
Yuri content:
Each game features at least one female romance option for a female protag. The first game has Leliana, the second decided to make everyone bisexual, which was pretty helpful and Inquisition has the first lesbian only option in Dragon Age. Veilguard went back to make everyone bisexual, which is still useful.
Of course with a franchise this popular, modders have done the holy work of giving players more options.

Rune Factory 5
Synopsis:
As the newest ranger of a peacekeeping organization known as SEED, protect your community by rounding up rowdy monsters and going on special missions. Cultivate your farm and friendships alike while unravelling rune-related mysteries!
Recommendation:
Rune Factory is a casual farming sim/JRPG hybrid series with a cartoonish artstyle and infinite things to do... as long as you are willing to invest the time. RF5 in particular was their first step into 3D and it shows. The game is by no means ugly or performs bad (outside of the Switch release that is), but it is clearly still very lacking. That being said, it is the first game to introduce same-sex romance and marriage, so that's a big upside.
With it's absurdly low difficulty and broken craftable gear you can absolutely do all its content if you just spend enough time collecting materials, following recipes and exploring at your leisure. Become insanely rich by selling produce from your farms or drops from enemy monsters. Tame monsters and turn them into ridable pets or make them work on your farms for free! Have fun at seasonal events with all the villagers and learn the true meaning of pain when your gorumet dish doesn't get first place because it is "out of season".
Yuri content:
All bachelorettes are romancable by Alice, the female protagonist. The game does a mostly decent job of adjusting to your sex, even including an anime cutscene of her wedding with each girl. Some events are clearly written with the expectation that Alice is into boys though, a remnant of the rushed change in development. On the upside, same-sex couples can still have children thanks to the power of the magic wish tree. Neat!

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma
Synopsis:
Welcome to the eastern nation of Azuma! In this fresh take on Rune Factory, use your powers as an Earth Dancer to restore the land, its people, and even its gods. Along the way, battle corrupted monsters, rebuild seasonal farms and villages, and form bonds with the colorful locals.
Recommendation:
What if Rune Factory 5 was actually a competent game? That's Guardians of Azuma. With a distinctly Japanese aesthetic and theme this spin-off breaks traditions, but it sure is a lot more fun to play and look at! It keeps the tradition of the previous games with its farming sim and JRPG mix, but most mechanics got quality of life improvements. The dating mechanics have also gotten more interesting.
The story is still just filler as in all these games, but at least it looks more cinematic. The game is also somehow even easier than the previous entries.
Yuri content:
There are more bachelorettes than ever, and this time they don't all look like children! The variety and designs are superb, but most importantly, you can date Hina, the all grown up version of the werebeast kid from RF5. Guess that one-sided crush from her friend never worked out for him (good).
Once again same-sex romance and marriage are available, but this time were planned from the start so it is way better integrated. This time around you can get children from magic turnips you plant... they still have both mothers' genes somehow. Neat.

Fate/Extra
Synopsis:
The Story is set in a school called Tsukumihara Academy, a fictional place existing within an artificial environment called the Moon Cell. There, the Moon Cell orchestrates a replication of the Holy Grail War using a system called Serial Phantasm or SERAPH, which handles the summoning of Servants. Servant data is taken from the Automaton (Moon Cell Automaton), a spiritual computer system built on the lunar surface by a pre-human civilization and discovered by humans in the year 2032.
Each of the 128 participants in the war must duel the other Masters in a place called the Arena, where failure results in deletion from both the real and digital worlds. When only one remains, the "Holy Grail" shall grant the victor's wish.
Recommendation:
Fate/Extra is the start of the first sub-series in the Type-Moon franchise to feature yuri content, which it achieved by giving the player the choice between a male and female protagonist. It is a classic JRPG, one of the earliest expansions of the Fate franchise and one of the best games released on the PSP. The writing is tight, the plot both serious and jovial in equal parts and most of all, it holds up no matter what decade one plays it in. It is simply incredibly immersive.
There are two main heroines whose routes split toward the last third of the game and there are three Servants to choose from (these are basically the warriors you command in battle). Each of them plays entirely differently and they have very different personalities and chemistry with the protagonist.
This game is a treat for Fate fans, but also a great entry into the franchise for newcomers.
Its difficulty is mostly based on which Servant one selects, with the easiest being Saber and the hardest being Caster. The rock-paper-scissors style combat is both easy to get into and requires a certain level of adaptability down the line.
Yuri content:
The female protagonist (default name: Hakuno Kishinami) has romantic implications with both main heroines and even more explicitely with the two female Servants. And unlike what was standard at the time, this is not because they just copied the male protag script and kept it the same. No, Fate/Extra takes the extra effort to actually acknowledge the protag's gender often, even in intimate contexts like romance. For example, the female protag has romantic tendencies with the only male Servant, while the male protag does not. This is a theme that will continue in this spin-off line, where femC gets universal attraction, while male MC only gets affection from women.
Anyway, Saber is bisexual with a heavy lean towards women, while Caster does not care about gender as long as she likes her Master's soul. The two main heroines in the plot, Rin Tohsaka and Rani VIII are both equal opportunity when it comes to the sex of their crush as well. While it may appear like a lame harem scenario, in Fate/Extra at least it still feels very personal and genuine.

The PSP and PSVita Stores should one still be able to connect to them or buy it on PlayAsia. But frankly, these days it's better to just emulate it on PPSSPP. If you emulate you will need an iso/rom of the game. Get that either here or here. The reason the patched rom is recommended is that it adds subtitles to combat and OP, fixes translation mistakes and bugs. So if you get the rom unpatched, here is a link to the Iwakura patcher. It's a patcher for both Fate/Extra and its sequel CCC...
・Fate/Extra CCC
Synopsis:
The story of "if" taking place on the same stage as Fate/EXTRA.
The quantum computer that gave birth to the world of extras causes a fatal error, and the Holy Grail War is twisted. As a result, the world itself changes and a new story begins.
The themes are "Girl's Passion" and "Eros". This is a love story that burns the moon.
Recommendation:
CCC is a sequel that ups the ante in every way. Insane amounts of replayability, monstrous amounts of text, hundreds of secrets, legendary battles, twists and gags. It has it all, and more. Of course it is also well known for being unfathomably horny, but surprisingly this has a point and the game focuses on themes of love, sex and desire in both literal and philosophical ways. This game absolutely requires you to have played Extra, as it all build on that game, both for characters, plot points and subversions.
A major improvement is also that male and female MC have become even more distinct from each other, which really helps sell the femC experience.
Yuri content:
The synopsis isn't lying, this game is honestly an amazing love story. And yet it also has the most possible romantic interactions for Hakuno yet. The game can have harem overtones sometimes, but ultimately there are only three real heroines (Sakura and the two female Servants), while the other female allies and antagonists also have the hots for Hakuno, they are not treated as seriously. Regardless, as long as you play the female protag this is a peak yuri story that is worth the dozens upon dozens of hours it will take to get to and through the CCC route. The Servant endings are equally gay and cute.

The only way to play CCC in English is via emulation on PPSSPP and with the Iwakure patcher mentioned in the main Extra section. The rom can be found here or here. Technically you can import the Japanese version for your PSP, then crack your PSP, then patch the cracked version of the real game on your PSP... but why?
・Fate/Extella
Synopsis:
In the digital realm of SERAPH, the Holy Grail War is over, but the land’s new ruler faces challenges and threats from all sides. The servants now find themselves drawing up tense and unlikely alliances, preparing for a conflict that may tear SERAPH apart...or destroy it entirely.
Recommendation:
Fate/EXTELLA is a alternate timeline that continues the story of Extra and CCC in a slightly different way. After winning the Holy Grail, Hakuno becomes the Ruler of the SERAPH. At her side are her Servants and armies of defense programs. Now a new threat approaches in the form of Velber and its forces, turning the genre into a musou hack 'n' slash! Despite that the story still takes front and center. The amount of visual novel segments and in depth dialogue are unheard of for a musou game and almost make the gameplay feel like a side-mode at times. The combat is servicable and fun enough, though very easy. Leveling Mystic Codes and Servant is really all one needs to do to succeed. It is still nice to actually play as the Servants with Hakuno as backup with Command Seals boosting them.
The game features 3 routes, which are all sort of canon, as they take place from the the perspectives of the three aspects of Hakuno after she gets split apart. Each follows her close relationship with one of the three major female Servants.
There are also Arcade modes for every Servant that show what-if scenarios and expand on them.
Yuri content:
Just like Extra and CCC, Extella gives you the choice to pick a female protagonist. This time around things are extremely explicit, with Hakuno basically being married to Saber and Caster. There is even an implied sex scene with the latter. The new major antagonist/love interest Altera is also prefers women over men. The game features many CGs, which all have male/female Hakuno variations and actually have a different feeling.
(Unrelated, but the Steam preview pics are exclusively of female Hakuno which I find gratifiying)

Persona 3 Portable
Synopsis:
Shortly after transferring to Gekkoukan High School, the protagonist encounters the "Dark Hour." Unfamiliar stillness swallows the city, people turn into eerie coffins, and otherworldly monsters called Shadows swarm. When they are attacked by one of these Shadows, and all hope seems lost, the power of the heart, their Persona is awakened.
Recommendation:
Persona games are well known these days, but the mainstream recognition no doubt began with Persona 3. Portable is a version of P3 specifically made for the Playstation Portable (as the name implies) and is rather experimental. In exchange for the major technical downgrade which forced them to downscale the graphics and audio quality, as well as cut the anime cutscenes, they added a plethora of features which would become staples of the series, like controllable party members and the ability to actually stay platonic friends with love interests (seriously why was P3 enforcing a harem while having a PUNISHMENT mechanic for cheating??). One feature that sadly stayed unique to P3P is the female protagonist option.
The female protagonist gets different choices, themes, sprites, outfits, voicelines and Social Links. Most notably she gets to have Social Links with the male party members, unlike the male protagonist. However, she also gets other unique Social Links with other girls. It is generally agreed upon that the female protag route is better written than the male MC route.
The game has several difficulty options to choose from and lets you advance at your own pace. It's relatively beginner friendly for people new to JRPGs and sims, butalso has a high skill floor for people who want to play at high difficulties and go for 100% completion.
Yuri content:
One of the big standout things about P3P is that the female protagonist can romance Aigis and her Social Link reflects the fact that they are both girls, making femC canonically bisexual. You can also choose your Velvet Room attendant (P3P added a male one for femC, but you can still pick the female one), whose questline also ends romantically and even implies a sexual relationship. So basically two yuri romances.

There is also one to uncensor femC's romance with Elizabeth (censored only in the Western version of the game).
Eternal Filena
Synopsis:
Eternal Filena (Jap: Eian no Filena) follows the adventures of Filena, the only survivor of the royal family in the ocean kingdom of Filosena which is destroyed by the ruling Devis Empire. Now part of the Empire's Clechia caste, slaves and second-rate citizens, Filena is raised as a boy by her adoptive grandfather Zenna so that she can be trained a battler, a warrior who takes part in gladiatorial styled games designed by the Empire to keep the masses happy. Filena befriends Lila, a slave assigned to be Filena's bed-mate before her first battler match, and sets off on a journey with Lila to free her homeland from tyranny and discover her true past.
Recommendation:
The SNES game is an adaptation of a novel series of the same name, which also received a short anime OVA. While the overall plot is similar it takes a lot of liberties, some perhaps beneficial to yuri fans in particular. While the game is nothing special or outstanding gameplay wise, it is still of historical significance for being a relatively mainstream JRPG with a lesbian main couple. Of course this game never left Japan so it is only truly playable via emulation and a fan translation. If one is willing to go through that hassle they might realize it is a better experience than on original hardware, if only because of the speed up function that helps with the auto-battle function to quickly grind up levels and avoid the really tedious combat.
Yuri content:
While the contents of the novels are less well known at this point, the game at least goes the whole mile with Filena and Lila. It gets to the point of direct confessions of love and implied marriage (this time not for show).

Virgo Vs. the Zodiac
Synopsis:
Dethrone the Zodiacs, revive the Golden Age and purge the Heretics that swarm the galaxy as Virgo, the queen of Purity, in this unforgiving timed actions turn-based JRPG.
Recommendation:
A story where you play a misguided "villain" is always something worth a look at least, but VVZ oozes style and actually has some good game mechanics going for it too. Not to mention Virgo starts out with a girlfriend right off the bat. While the combat is fun, the actual choices/actions you take and how they affect what ending you get can be quite obtuse. The story also juggles humor with depressing serious tones constantly, as expected of a game inspired by Mother 3.
Yuri content:
Virgo's in a dedicated relationship as is, but there are several yuri side-couples too. How happy the outcome for the yuri is depends mostly on the ending you get. The game is not pulling punches or giving you the Hollywood ending though, that's for sure.

Random Dungeon
Synopsis:
Dungeon crawler RPG with light town-building elements created in RPGmaker VX by hamusuta. The player controls a trio of adventurers exploring a mysterious dungeon in order to gather funds to revitalize their town.
Recommendation:
Hamasuta is a legend in Japanese indie game circles, a solo dev who has created several outstanding works already, which got updated for years on end with more and more content. Though the "sequel" ZakuZaku Actors is a bigger cultural milestone in Japan, Random Dungeon is the full on yuri experience.
For the gameplay it's good to remember that the loot in the dungeon is randomized, with battles being turn-based affairs heavily dependent on the use of status and buffs/debuffs, as well as the right equipment. The story is mostly humorous and unapologetically yuri, and is presented in a somewhat non-linear manner, with story scenes being unlocked by achieving certain conditions (for example, finding a random weapon in the dungeon, raising your affinity level with a certain character, or using a facility in the town a certain number of times). While the game uses a traditional leveling system, smart use of strategy is rewarded in the form of additional loot and bonus EXP awarded for beating the bosses below a recommended level
Yuri content:
All the main characters are gay and most relationships are yuri focused, both in the story and town events. While the tone of the game is mostly wacky, it has its serious and emotional moments too, which even go into the romances as well. Still, awkward flirting and humorous misunderstandings are part of the charme.

Princess and the Rose Knight
Synopsis:
The player controls Galatea, commander of the newly established princess guard,on her adventures trying to protect the adventure-loving princess of Laomedia. The player must explore various dungeons and partake in turn-based combat to defeat enemies.
Recommendation:
Short yuri-themed RPGmaker game created by RPG Tankentai (also known as the creator of Hat World).
While the in-dungeon gameplay is fairly similar to most traditional console RPGs (although, the game does feature a SaGa-inspired glimmer system for unlocking new abilities mid-combat), while in the castle, the player can also interact with a variety of characters and flirt with all the cute girls around! The game keeps track of how "yuri" the player's responses to the different characters are via a yuri gauge, a fun play on the typical alignment gauge found in other RPGs.
Yuri content:
Yuri is not just a mechanic, it is the ultimate motivation and goal in a way. While you can avoid yuri themed choices and keep the replies neutral... why would you? Be gay, win gay prizes.

Sakura Dungeon
Synopsis:
You are Yomi, an ancient fox spirit. Your dungeon has been stolen from you while you have been sealed away in a deep sleep. Capture monster girls, collect loot, explore the dungeon's depths and reclaim what is yours in this first-person RPG dungeon crawler.
Recommendation:
Sakura Dungeon is an abnormality: A Winged Cloud game with actual gameplay! Winged Cloud is known for their short ergoe Visual Novels, of which many are in fact yuri. But they are considered more "fast food" in the yuri VN scene. Decent art, okayish storylines and about 4-6 hours of playtime. Sakura Dungeon on the other hand is a proper DRPG featuring proper gameplay and several collectible party members/heroines. It has an unusual amount of sexual encounters because of that too (all lesbian).
The game is in fact entirely playable and satisfying in its All Ages state, but it is still recommended to get the 18+ patch if you buy it on a platform where it needs one.
Yuri content
The game features a canon main relationship for Yomi that plays out across the game, but there are many optional sex scenes with monster girls and some side-couples.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Synopsis:
War is coming to the continent of Fódlan. Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros, which hosts the prestigious Officer’s Academy within its headquarters. You are invited to teach one of its three mighty houses, each comprised of students brimming with personality and represented by a royal from one of three territories. As their professor, you must lead your students in their academic lives and in turn-based, tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome. Which house, and which path, will you choose?
Recommendation:
Fire Emblem Three Houses is a continuation of the Fire Emblem rennaissance started with Fire Emblem Awakening, but without a doubt it is the most successful FE game ever made and what truly catapulted the series into full mainstream. One of the factors for its immense popularity could be the addition of same-sex romance, a feature that was requested for decades.
Presentation, music and performance are immaculate, the battle system refined to a polish and the writing, for once, is actually good. Those are 3H's standout qualities. Of course it also has some downsides, like for example a rather tedious prologue segment before the route split, with very repetitive and drawn out academy segments. That might be interesting on your first playthrough, but as the game encourages multiple branching paths you will have to repeat the academy around 3 times at a minimum.
The game featues 4 routes, one of which is secret and hidden behind picking one faction and then changing course with a decision. There are many different endings, none of them are considered the true ending. Unlike in prior FE games, there is not an unlockable true route or ending. You make your choices and you live with the consequences.
The player character's sex can be selected at the start of the game, but Byleth is far more of a blank slate than most prior FE protagonists. So the heavy lifting has to be done by the three house leaders when it comes to plot and character development.
A spin-off called Fire Emblem: Three Hopes was released soon after which is a musou style hack 'n slash. It vaguely follows similar plot points to the main game, but it has far less relationship focus and is generally not as good. Not worthwhile for yuri.
Yuri content:
Although there are finally same-sex pairings (only took them 20 years), it's not like all characters have same-sex options. There are around 5 possible yuri pairings in the game, which include the ones with the self-insert protagonist Byleth. It probably doesn't have to be said, but to get the maximum yuri out of the game it is best to choose Edelgard's house or the church's path, as both Edelgard and Rhea are romancable by female Byleth. However, Edelgard also has her own yuri pairings on top. The Supports and ending slides for the actual characters are generally more interesting than the Byleth romances.

After I Met That Catgirl, My Questlist Got Too Long!
a Dragon's reQuest
Synopsis:
a Dragon's reQuest is nominally a classic-styled retro JRPG with a few modern bells and whistles: Character talkie-pictures, exhaustive character dialog, DEEPLY investigatable background maps, difficult subject matter, mature character relationships that occasionally get sexual, spicy subject matter, bunny suits etc.
Live, love, laugh, cry, fall down, get frustrated, get laid, recruit 30 succubusses, get killed, get cancer, discover secrets and walk across a continent with the princesses of a Dragon's reQuest.
Maybe you'll discover some secrets about yourself in the process.
Recommendation:
Saintbomber's/LargeBattleshipStudios' 6 year long project, a Dagon's reQuest is a phenomenal RPGmaker game inspired by classic JRPGs, but with the subversive humor of a parody and the deep self-reflection of a deconstruction. It's a content deep mine full of secrets, different endings, lengthy optional content, and servicable gameplay. The artstyle is nothing to write home about, but has a certain unhinged charme. The game is of course carried by its outstanding writing.
It's the kind of game where you can interact with a random household object and get a 5 minute conversation out of it. If that's your thing, this game is for you. That being said, there is an integrated walkthrough in the download folder for the more mindboggling quests and the ending conditions.
Yuri content:
All main characters are adult lesbians and all enemies are monster girls, which can be captured. Nearly every major plot character is also female. It's an all around lesbian bonanza. Sexual encounters come easy, relationships are more complicated. It's all up to the endings you choose. Like some kind of metaphor for adult life...

Angelic Acceptor: Alouette
Synopsis:
Simone Bradley is an ordinary everyday girl charged with the important mission of defending love and justice in the form of the invincible and adorable Angelic Acceptor: Alouette! (VXA)
One day, our "completely ordinary girl" Simone happens across a strange raffle in which she wins a seemingly normal Magical Girl toy that turns her life upside down! But what happens when something turns your upside down life upside down again? Does it turn right-side up, or does it simply start spinning out of control on its own?
Find out in this slightly western-flavored Magical Girl story that questions the meanings of love, purity and normalcy.
Recommendation:
If a Dragon's reQuest was SaintBomber's/LargeBattleshipStudios' magnum opus, then Angelic Acceptor Alouette is the opus magnum. It's just as good, but different. Another RPGmaker game, but this time Magical Girl themed, a vast and yet incredibly insular genre. What happens when a genre for little girls all about inspiring kids is put in the hand of Saintomber's wit and pushed back out with an adult cast? Magic. Lots of philosophical and existential musings too, but mostly magic.
The story is split into major and minor episodes, reminiscent of your favorite Mahou Shoujo anime, but it features lots of secret and optional content as well as different endings (which are somehow not mutually exclusive). The gameplay is basic as usual, while the visuals have seen a slight upgrade since the prior releases. If you play a Saintbomber game you are here for the writing first and foremost.
Yuri content:
It's a story about lesbian magical girls, which should be a synonym to be honest. While there is overall less wanton gayness, it is far more condensed, going along with the game's slightly more focused writing. There is less sexual content and it is all optional, but it's still here for you and all yuri.

FLOWERS
Synopsis:
In the middle of a deep, dense forest can be found a hidden grove of beauty: Saint Angraecum Academy, a missionary school for proper young ladies of high school age. Although it is renowned for many reasons, from the gorgeousness of its Western-style architecture to its coveted ballet education, there is one programme that demonstrates its uniqueness: the Amitié system, in which girls are paired together as partners and encouraged to develop a deep, long-lasting friendship. However, friendship is not all that blossoms between the young girls at Saint Angraecum...
Flowers is an all-ages Japanese visual novel series in four seasonally-themed parts, each involving around the same core cast of characters but with different protagonists and love interests.
Recommendation:
The FLOWERS quadrilogy is one of the most influential and highly regarded yuri series of the modern day. Be it the gorgeous artstyle, the tightly knit cast, the abundant mysteries or the sweet/sour/bitter, yet always tender emotions of these girls that change with the seasons, it is a must read for any long time yuri fan. Intentionally evoking, yet subverting Class S tropes, the series revels in historical yuri, while somehow being contemporary enough for all the girls to be well versed in recent horror movies and Western novels. This contradiction also extends into the general feeling of the story. Isolated Angraecum often seems to be stuck in the 1960s when looking at the surface, only alluding to the fact that the outside world is quite normal and modern.
Across the 4 visual novels the player switches POV between protagonists and each has a very distinct voice and mood, which makes the experiences starkly different each time. One thing that connects all three protagonists is their sharp wit and investigative nature, which makes the detective like logic games possible. These are considered one of the weaker parts of the games, as they often require outside knowledge and leaps of logic to get to the conclusion the game requires. Either use a guide or submit yourself to trial and error... or perhaps get lucky?
Yuri content:
Unlike its Class S veneer, FLOWERS goes very explicit with its yuri while not pushing an overly oppressive tragedy narrative on the reader. Most of the pairings across the four games will go through challenges and struggles, but ultimately love is meant to triumph. That doesn't mean that tragedy and despair are not a powerful aspect of some couples in the tale.
Each installment also features a multitude of endings. While some are just straightforward bad endings, many are also What-Ifs with different romantic pairings.
Due to its nature this series might be a better fit for experienced yuri enjoyers, although nothing should stop a newcomer from enjoying it per se.

Seabed
Synopsis:
SeaBed is a critically acclaimed yuri-themed mystery visual novel told through the perspectives of three separate characters: Mizuno Sachiko, a designer plagued by hallucinations of her past lover; Narasaki Hibiki, Sachiko's friend and a psychiatrist researching the workings of human memories; and Takako, Sachiko's former lover who has been rapidly forgetting her past, including how or why the two women drifted apart despite being together since childhood.
All three live in different worlds, but seek the same goal. To separate truth from illusion. To make sense of their own lives.
Recommendation:
Recommending Seabed is complicated, because saying anything about it automatically means spoiling it. It is an acclaimed, beloved and deeply emotional work that has made most people who experienced it cry and touched them forever. It is not light cuisine as far as yuri works go and should be approached with the knowledge that the experience will hurt. It is a yuri classic and a defining work that has inspired many popular yuri writers across the years.
It is very oldschool both in style and worldview, reminding more of works from the late 90s to early 00s, but it has achieved permanent relevance.
The game has gotten several audio drama spin-offs and additions which can mostly be bought on Steam or other store pages too. While they are very short, they are well done and worth the money for anyone who truly loves Seabed.
Yuri content:
Without a doubt it's a yuri story. Saying anything more than what's in the synopsis would be a spoiler.

Kindred Spirits on the Roof (Full Chorus)
Synopsis:
Let’s Make This a Yuritopia!
Kokonotsuboshi Girls' Academy of Commerce, a school built on the site of an old castle, known as "Shirojo." Toomi Yuna spends her time here on her own, until one day her lunch on the roof is suddenly interrupted by a pair of ghosts.
Enoki Sachi, who died in an accident before the war, and Nagatani Megumi, who died of illness thirty years ago. These "kindred spirits" died with unrequited feelings in their hearts, met, and fell in love. They hold an ardent wish to experience their "first time" together before their eternal rest... But they don't know how.
The two haunting spirits enlist Yuna to help them foster more "yuri" couples at the school, to assist girls struggling with their hidden feelings, and with the hope that their successes will help them glean the insight they need.
Recommendation:
Would you believe it if I said this was the first eroge VN released on Steam? Yes, this yuri visual novel is what started the big debate about erotic VNs on Steam back in the day. And it offers the content that would make it quite debated these days too. All underage high school girls and even a student/teacher romance.
But that trivia aside, Kindred Spirits is a classic yuri VN and perhaps one of the most beloved. It has lots of content and many different pairings to the point where you have to like at least one of them! The game itself is kinetic, aka unaffected or changd by choices. There aresome choices but they really don't affect anything except the immediate response. The way you experience the story is rather unique though. You pick events from a calendar and slowly discover the forming relationships of all the couples. Some events unlock all the way back at the beginning of the year sometimes too, it's all over the place.
Full Chorus adds voice acting, a bunch of new events and 10 voice drama CDs with subtitles to experience. It's a great deal.
If you liked the game, I recommend buying the bonus manga, two volumes with two new couples. Here is a taste of it with the first three chapters translated on Dynasty-scans. It's called "Kindred Spirits on the Roof Complete Collection" which includes both volumes in one omnibus and is available on almost all online sellers.
Yuri content:
Everything in this story revolves around girls loving girls. The couples are diverse and face different types of challenges to their love. Except for one couple, all of the girls start out single and inexperienced, needing the help of Yuna and the spirits to get together. But it doesn’t stop at a confession scene for them, the relationships are fully fleshed out and elaborated on. Even though the synopsis makes it seem like Yuna is a neutral cupid of lesbian love, she also gets her very own yuri ending.

Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o (A Kiss for the Petals)
Synopsis:
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o (A Kiss For the Petals)
I, Nanami Oda, am secretly in love with my upperclassman, Yūna, the girl who makes my heart flutter♪ She’s smart, and beautiful, and kind… She’s like a sculpture of my ideal woman. She’s my perfect idol! But me, on the other hand… I’m so plain, an upperclassman would be embarrassed to be seen with me… But wait! Maybe if I was on the same committee as her… Ahh, I’d die of happiness!!
But, one day… Guess what I saw!! My upperclassman… in class, after school… pleasuring herself. As the pure, clean image of my upperclassman crumbled thunderously, I overheard a sweet whisper. “Nanami-chan… I like you…”
Words so sweet and magical, I could barely believe they were true♪
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Watashi no Ouji-sama (A Kiss for the Petals: My Dear Prince)
I am Kitajima Kaede, and I am not really good at dealing with people. I'm also the class rep. In school, I run into my cousin Sara, and suddenly I find myself sharing a passionate kiss with her! In the years that I haven't seen her, she's grown into a cute, outgoing girl who has become a famous model.
Even fashion magazines know about her, and many in my school idolize her. She makes me look extra dull by comparison.
And yet she calls me out from afar and clings to me, heedless of the stares people give us. Because I don't like to stand out, I instinctively act coldly towards Sara. But then she suddenly pushed me down. She whispers to me, "I want everything there is to you." Such joy, such bliss and such embarrassment. What's to become of me?
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Anata to Koibito Tsunagi (A Kiss For The Petals - Joined In Love With You)
My name is Sawaguchi Mai. I always get myself involved with my classmate, Kawamura Reo. Reo is pretty short and has silky hair... In short, she's cute. But sometimes, she can be really obstinate. I'm trying to do my best to get her to get along with the rest of the class, but since we're both headstrong we always end up fighting. It's so frustrating, especially since she can't do anything without me around!
But whenever I talk to her, Reo always acts like I'm bothering her. I wonder if she hates me... But then, just when I got all depressed Reo came up to me and told me, "You've got it all wrong! I love you, Mai! I love you so much!" Her confession completely took me by surprise. Could it be that I'm in love with Reo too!?
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Itoshisa no Photograph (A Kiss For The Petals - Beloved Photograph)
I, Kaede Kitajima, am the class representative with a somewhat reserved personality who has a bit of trouble standing out. That was just a short while ago, but for some reason, I’ve become quite a famous person in school! The encounter with my cousin Sara, whom I reunited with after several years, completely captivated me. Thanks to her, I’ve started to stand out as well... but right now, I’m very happy♪
Sara is a fashion model and a popular one at that, with plenty of work to do. However, she often cutely complains, "I don’t want to be apart from you, Kaede!" and I find myself easily giving in to her whims. But it’s tough for me too! Being apart from my beloved Sara, even for a moment, is hard... Ah, my affectionate feelings only accelerate the bittersweet longing... I think I truly love Sara!
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Anata o Suki na Shiawase (A Kiss For The Petals - The Joy Of Loving You)
Today, Mai is having some intimate and lovey-dovey moments with her tsundere girlfriend, Reo. However, due to all the cuteness, Reo's math grades are in jeopardy! Feeling a sense of responsibility, Mai decides to embark on an intense study session with Reo to help her prepare for the test.
But Reo, who isn’t feeling very motivated, receives this encouragement from Mai: "If you do your best, I'll give you a reward."
As they endure the distractions of their affection during study time, Reo manages to get an average score. However, she immediately demands the promised "reward" from Mai... "I want to go on a date with you, Mai."
With such a sweet request from the earnest Reo, will Mai be able to maintain her composure?
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Kuchibiru to Kiss de Tsubuyaite (A Kiss For The Petals - Whisper With A Kiss)
The protagonist, Nanami Oda, is happily in a relationship with her girlfriend, Yuna Matsubara. However, Yuna is the idol of the academy, and their relationship is a secret, which makes Nanami feel a bit lonely. Despite this, Yuna, who is deeply in love with Nanami, gets jealous even of Nanami's classmates, leading to a hectic daily life!? "Oh, I want to become a girl worthy of my Onee-sama!"
Such a secret love has a sweet taste♪ Today, the passionate couple shares kisses once again...♪
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Amakute Hoshikute Torokeru Chuu (A Kiss For The Petals - Sweet Enchanting Kisses)
Our protagonist, Takako Suminoe, is a homeroom teacher… Her student, Runa Hōraisen, introduces herself, and then kisses Takako?!
“Listen up. As of now, Takako Suminoe belongs to me. If you make a move on her, I won’t forgive you♪”
A life with that arrogant queen, Runa, as your lover is so sweet and stimulating!
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Tenshi no Hanabira Zome (A Kiss For The Petals - Dyed With An Angel's Petals)
While class representative Kirishima Shizuku has foreign exchange student Shitogi Eris under her wing, a faintly glowing love settles into her heart.
However, Shizuku, worried sick thinking her nagging personality landed her on her crush's bad side, actually gets a confession straight to her face from Eris?! Shizuku: "D-D-D-Don't misunderstand! I-I-I don't feel anything at all for you!"
This is the romantic comedy of Shizuku, the tsundere Yamato Nadeshiko, and Eris, the cool, blonde foreign exchange student not afraid to show her feelings, and their flirtatious, madly-in-love-with-each-other yuri relationship.
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Amakute Otona no Torokeru Chuu (A Kiss For The Petals - Sweet Grown-up Kisses)
The protagonist, Takako Suminoe, has spent her spring break on a school training program, which has left her live-in girlfriend and student, Runa Horaisen, feeling quite sulky. Of course, Takako feels lonely too, but that doesn’t help improve Runa's mood... In response, Takako comes up with an extraordinary date plan just for Runa...
Their first date, with the somewhat unruly queen Runa, turns out to be incredibly exciting!♪
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Lily Platinum (A Kiss For The Petals - Lily Platinum)
Shizuku is the embodiment of pure and gracious Japanese womanhood, to whom all fashions become. Eris is a platinum blonde beauty from overseas. Their long-awaited union is here, and it's passionate!! The yuri pair dance, tsundere coy vs. direct and cool, with Eris ever more obsessed, while Shizuku gently resists... "Wa-- Wait, Eris, ahhnn, not now... you can't touch me like this now... ahhhhnnn...!"
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Michael no Otome-tachi (A Kiss for The Petals - Maidens of Michael)
Today at Saint Michael Girls' School, the class representative for the first-year “Snow” Class, Azumi Risa, had once again been fighting with the class troublemaker, Ayase Miya. Risa, who is earnest and hard-nosed, and Miya, who hates to cooperate with others, couldn’t have been less right for each other, as they were always on the verge of tearing each other’s throats out.
At the time, the whole school was in a festive mood with Christmas just around the corner. As couples and spur-of-the-moment couples alike were flirtatiously carrying on, the whole school was abuzz with excitement over the “St. Michael’s Best Couple” poll being conducted by the student volunteers. Risa, who was single, figured it didn’t concern her…
So then how did she and Miya end up being chosen?!
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Atelier no Koibito-tachi (A Kiss for The Petals - Lovers of the Atelier)
The dust has settled from the boisterous Best Couple's events, the graduation ceremony of the third-year students has passed without incident, and Risa has returned to her laid-back daily lifestyle. Although Miya continues to flaunt her chronic truancy in Risa's face, now that the two are passionate lovers, their days are full of joy.
Today, once again, they find themselves passing the time in the attic of the old school building, in the secret atelier known only to them as has become their habit. The overly-serious Risa is feeling a slight twinge of guilt at their appropriation of this room. She asks Miya to tell her the story of how she discovered this place, but in this atelier hides a sweet, sweet romance that Risa couldn't begin to imagine...
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Shirayuki no Kishi (A Kiss For The Petals - Snow White Knight)
The month is June – the time when high school girls change into their summer uniforms. Azumi Risa, who has now moved on to her second year of high school, has been hearing around campus that the new freshmen are bubbling over with excitement over the Best Couples poll.
Risa herself was selected as a Best Couple along with Ayase Miya due to her classmates’ misconceptions, and although she rejected it at the time, the two of them now share a fully mutual love as they spend their passionate days together. And so, when a new freshman pair is selected, they’re introduced to the second and third year couples.
This year’s freshman couple consists of Shirakawa Sayuki, a talented scholar and athlete who is being hailed as “The Perfect Lady,” along with Shinozaki Rikka, a girl who set a national record in the 100 meter dash shortly after enrolling. However, when Risa went to greet these two girls, Rikka exclaimed “Risa-nee!” and wrapped her arms around her. The surrounding students let out a shrill scream and burst into an uproar at the sight of these two sharing a passionate embrace in front of their respective partners!
With the campus rocked by this… scandal? What will become of Risa and Miya, not to mention Rikka and Sayuki?!
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Anata ni Chikau Ai (A Kiss For The Petals - My Sworn Love for You)
Shizuku and her girlfriend Eris enjoyed their vacation with the other Best Couples from St. Michael’s… But after getting tangled up with Rena, who still has some summer vacation left, they’ve lingered on the tropical island.
However, Eris continues to be a hit with the ladies, and Shizuku is feeling a little let down. But when she decides to consult with Rena about her anxiety…
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Deatta Koro no Omoide ni (A Kiss For The Petals - Remembering How We Met)
The story follows the conclusion of Risa and Miya’s storyline from A Kiss For The Petals – Snow White’s Knight.
The season is fall… as the uniforms transition from summer to winter garments, Risa suddenly has a pang of nostalgia. It was this very uniform she was wearing on her first day at St. Michael’s… The day she met her future girlfriend Miya. Now the two of them share a passionate life as a couple living in Risa’s apartment, but there was a time in their relationship when the very sight of one another would be enough to set off an endless bout of arguing. From Risa’s point of view, it all started with her just trying to get Miya to come to class… And even now with the two of them going out, the chronically truant girl has failed to mend her ways.
Remembering those days elicits a faint laugh from Risa. Miya, sitting alongside her, questions Risa’s sudden outburst with a puzzled expression. “I was just thinking back… About when we first met.”
It was a beautiful spring day, with sakura petals dancing in the air. The day of her unforgettable first encounter with Miya…
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Tenshi no Akogare (A Kiss For The Petals - The Angel's Longing)
Aihara Ringo, who is in her first year at the nursing school, has decided to room with Takao Chiaki, an old family friend from back home. Ringo idolizes Chiaki and has made it her life’s goal to become a respectable nurse just like her. However…
Once they actually start living together, Ringo comes to realize that Chiaki takes much worse care of herself than she imagined, and is at the same time a very physically affectionate person. Will the disparity between Chiaki the goddess and the Chiaki who delights in sexual harassment drive Ringo crazy!?
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Tenshi-tachi no Harukoi (A Kiss For The Petals - The Angels' Spring Romance)
Yuuno had just been admitted to nursing school and was filled with a desire to watch over her classmate and roommate, Satsuki. Satsuki was a brilliant girl who was admitted to nursing school with top marks; however, she wasn’t very aware of her surroundings, and her ability to get by on her own was extremely poor… She was kind of eccentric.
From that time on, Yuuno spent her days feeling fulfilled in the role of an accomplished older girl taking care of an inept younger sister… “I feel like we’ve become more than friends. No, I’d go as far as to say I love you.”
How will Yuuno react to Satsuki’s sudden confession…?
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Tenshi-tachi no Yakusoku (A Kiss For The Petals - The Angels' Promise)
Sonohana Tenshi-tachi no Yakusoku introduces us to another new couple - Akira and Narumi - in the St. Michael's Nursing School. Akira is a tsundere and Narumi is a bit on the sadistic side.
It’s shortly after enrolling in nursing school, and Narumi has no one to blame but her own nosey self. It started with a random impulse to butt into the life of the standoffish Akira, and before Narumi knew it she had become the girl’s shadow. But the way Akira blows up at Narumi at the drop of a hat, and the verbal abuse she lays on her is just too much.
On the other hand… When Akira is asleep her beauty is transcendent, and Narumi just can’t help but be drawn to those kissable lips…
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: New Gen! (A Kiss For The Petals - The New Generation)
At the Saint Michael Girls' School... festivities erupted among the girls of the annex. The reason for their celebration is the Best Couples poll being held at the main campus. The students at the annex, who look up to the girls from the main campus, decided, "Let's have our own Best Couples!" ...It was always inevitable.
And so, the fairest and most intimate couples were nominated... The first couple is a pair of childhood friends, Misawa Nagisa and Takahata Rina. The second couple is a pair of twin sisters, Kimishima Ai and her younger sister Aya. And finally... The transfer student who saw this whole thing as no concern of hers, Onohara Hazuki, is shocked to hear that she too, was chosen to be among the Best Couples. Moreover, her partner is the sheltered young debutante, Suoh Manami. Actually, Hazuki has secretly been crushing on the impeccable Manami... But the truth is, they're far from a couple, and while their classmates may cheer them on, it's all in vain.
But then... Hazuki works up all her courage to ask Manami to become a "Best Couple" with her, and...
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Revolution! Rinagisa (A Kiss For The Petals - Revolution!)
Nagisa gets caught having a little too much fun with Rikka, her senior on the track and field team whom she idolizes. Seeing them like this, Rina goes into a jealous rage! She storms out of the room with Manami and Ai.
Nagisa tries everything she can to apologize, but Rina won’t hear it.
Nagisa is in such shock over the event that she ends up becoming a complete wreck, much to the concern of Hazuki and Aya…
Hanahira! (A Kiss For The Petals - Hanahira!)
The story revolves around four girls who attend Saint Michael Girls’ School and highlights all their cute dokidoki yuriyuri love for one another during and after school. The story is quite lighthearted and follows the four girls at school, shopping, hanging around and coming together for a pajama party.
Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o: Yuririn (A Kiss For The Petals - YuriCycle)
Risa, her weight in extremely (beep) condition due to all those delicious snacks and tea, has resolved to go on a diet! However… cutting sweets out of your diet is extremely hard, so seeing how much Risa is suffering, Mai recommends a cycling diet. Hearing how Mai already successfully lost five kilograms, Risa is extremely interested!
Recommendation:
Sono Hanabira might as well be the most influential yuri eroge series of all time. The series spanning around 10 years of consistent releases began with short ero visual novels that told small stories about individual couples and reached mainstream commercial sales with big ensemble cast games down the line. Unfortunately due to creative differences between the developers the series ended abruptly, only leaving with two spin-offs at the very end.
There are 15 main line games, 3 Angels series games, 2 new generation games and 2 spin-offs. While many claim that the games should be played in order, there are some exceptions. The Angels trilogy is pretty much standalone and the New Generation titles are also a good starting point of their own. Some may also suggest playing the individual couples' trilogies back to back, but due to many cross-references this is not recommended.
The majority of these VNs feature porn, that is just unavoidable. It is an eroge series after all. There are a couple of All Ages games, especially towards the end of the franchise, but those still require playing the erotic ones to make sense. Aside from the first game which features watersports scenes, all the other games are exceptionally vanilla with just pure lesbian sex.
Sono Hanabira has also turned into a multimedia franchise in that decade, releaseing audio dramas, a short erotic OVA and Light Novels.
The Light Novels are mostly side-stories or self-contained mini stories and sadly have not been translated with the exception of two, which were translated by Wings of Yuri.
A Kiss For The Petals - Our Christmas Together
A Kiss For The Petals - Our Valentine's Together
The archive has all of the raw Light Novels and comiket bonuses at least.
Audio drama collection on the archive, not translated.
The anime OVA is loosely based on the third visual novel entry "Joined in Love With You", featuring Seo and Mai. Here is a torrent for the blue-ray rip. You can probably find it on any hentai streaming site too.
Yuri content:
High school girls, teachers, nurses, foreigners, if they can be lesbians, they will be lesbians. The central school of the story, St. Michael's Girls Academy, apparently put a condition in their application process that only the most homosexual ladies may enter. These girls are explicitly in love and explicitely horny all the time. That is not to say the yuri cannot be sweet or emotional, don't let the erotic sheen distract you from that. It's just that the series unlike many others remembers that lesbians have a sex drive too.
In terms of variety, there are about a dozen major couples by the end of the series, which each get their solo focused games as well as make appearances in ensemble games. The couples become interconnected enough that they may appear as supporting characters in other stories too.

Please Be Happy
Synopsis:
Born as a fox in the forest of Korea, Miho carries with her the memory of a traveler who showed her kindness and spoke of home. Now more human than fox, Miho has spent a long, long time searching for her person. She arrives by airship to Wellington, one of the jewels of the floating island of New Zealand.
Despite her years spent observing humans, she still has a lot to learn about their culture and society. She's made a living so far as a thief, her heightened senses allowing her to easily take advantage of people. She's also seen a lot of the worst of what mankind has to offer. It's only after meeting Juliet, the owner of a small library, and Aspen, an aspiring novelist, that Miho starts to understand what kindness is, and that there's more than just the bad stuff when it comes to people.
Recommendation:
Please Be Happy could very well be considered Studio Elan's magnum opus. A work that just does everything right: Presentation, voice acting, writing and romance. It is the full package. While Studio Elan works tend to have polarizing reception, Please Be Happy is universally acclaimed. For good reason.
The story is fairly unique, following a world where non-human species co-exist with humanity and the setting of New Zealand is certainly unheard of in visual novels. Much like the far off island itself, this story is laid back and kind of mysterious to outsiders. This story tackles deeply emotional themes and treats all of these topics tastefully. The romance build up across the two heroine's routes is perfectly paced. Both Aspen and Juliet can give something to Miho that she desperately seeks, in their own individual ways.
This is a story about healing. And we all need a little bit of that.
Yuri content:
There are two major routes to follow, Aspen's or Juliet's. Both have their own extensive romance with Miho, but there is lots of content for both, as the trio interacts a lot. Without spoiling anything, the relationships explore new frontiers rarely seen in yuri VNs.
Addendum: It is so sad that we failed to get the polyamory route goal financed on the Kickstarter. What could have been...

Fatal Twelve
Synopsis:
Shishimai Rinka was a high schooler who ran a small café named Lion House in place of her grandmother. She lived her life much like any other person her age, but one day, she was caught up in an explosion while returning home on the train alongside her friend, Hitsuji Naomi. In an attempt to save her friend's life, she shields her on instinct the moment the explosion goes off, losing her life in the process. However, before she knew it, she was back at Lion House, happily chatting with her friends as if nothing had happened in the first place.
A few days later, she found herself in a strange world. Here she met Parca, an odd girl claiming to be a goddess. It turns out that she had somehow become a participant in Divine Selection, a ritual carried out over twelve weeks by twelve people, which allowed them to compete in order to undo their deaths.
Recommendation:
Fatal Twelve is part of the rather overdone "death game" genre, but with quite the unique approach. If anything it's that trope done right, with meaningful character development and proper mysteries to solve. The detective style gameplay keeps the player on their toes, while the overarching plot and the truth behind Rinka's death and the circumstances of her friend Miharu also appearing in this world between life and death pulls them along with ever growing intrigue.
The story may appear bleak at times, but it is building towards something grand. It is a visual novel anyone with an interest in solving mysteries can enjoy.
For some reason the PS4 and Switch versions of the game contain extra content that the PC ports never got. So there is a genuine argument to be made for getting the console releases instead.
Yuri content:
Most of the yuri is a spoiler, but let's just say that it turns out to be a core theme of the story and is delved into appropiately over time.
There are multiple endings, but the true ending is the most yuri.

Lilycle Rainbow Stage!!!
Synopsis:
In this yuri visual novel featuring an all-star cast, you follow one main love triangle as they navigate their budding romance and the pursuit of their goals, unlocking new, heartwarming events to view from the perspectives of each cute girl in six other precious couples as well.
Recommendation:
Lilycle is a popular and long running yuri franchise, mostly contained in CD dramas and other vocal tracks by the circle, featuring many popular yuri voice actresses. Lilycle Rainbow Stage!!! is a visual novel adaptation of this series and its couples that serves as an introduction to the franchise and also stands on its own merits. It really is all about the cute girls and their cute romances from start to finish. With 7 couples you certainly will get many unique dynamics and flavors of yuri to explore. The main triangle the was created for this VN allows you to influence what combination will eventually become romantic. It works in all three directions.
In truth this is a game where you unlock more games in a calendar over a school year and the more you read of each pairing the more new content for them you unlock. The game features only a couple of real choices, but those will then unlock the triangle's different variations. This game is completely accumulative though, so you can unlock all possible events and romances simultaneously.
Yuri content:
The most sugary sweet kind of yuri with intensely dieabetes inducing interactions and plotlines. As a romance focused work it really excells at making the relationships enjoyable, but as the pairings are mostly established there might not be many surprises. Of course the main triangle gives some variation that makes you want to know how the different romances could turn out for them! Warning: One of the pairings consists of blood related sisters. If incest is a step too far for you, their events are all optional.
There is DLC for the duet songs between each pairing which is highly recommended. That album is good and it adds more lovey-dovey yuri to the experience.

Perfect Gold
Synopsis:
Audrey Clary, heiress and LeFay Academy's brightest alchemy student, is about to have her first and worst detention experience of all time. It's bad enough that she has to stay in detention during Sunflower Day—it's even worse that she's stuck in detention with the one and only Marion LaRue, the self-proclaimed “Chaotic Fireball Legend” of LeFay Academy.
Marion LaRue is not having a fun day at all. What was meant to be a harmless little fire turned into an explosion that has her stuck in detention, missing out on one of the rare opportunities for her to enjoy life outside the academy. And of course she just had to be stuck with Audrey Clary, of all the high class LeFay students she could be in detention with.
Determined to not miss out on the long-awaited festival, Audrey and Marion begrudgingly work together to escape detention and find their way to the festival. As they explore the city and celebrate the Sunflower Festival together, an old friendship is rekindled, and new feelings begin to bloom
Recommendation:
Perfect Gold used to be the gold standard (pun intended) for non-Japanese yuri VNs. It is short, but impactful, boasts with great quality, full voice acting and what is clearly a lot of ambition in the writing that makes you want to see more of this world. While the game featurs choices it is really not one for branching plots, but they can affect the ultimate ending you get, so try to make the right choices... or just replay it, it's short enough.
These days a few more quality English VNs have been made, but Perfect Gold never lost any of its luster. It's a great game for both people old and new to the genre.
Yuri content:
The central focus lies on Marion and Audrey’s complicated relationship that used to be so very different just a year ago. The two have romantic chemistry and sexual tension for days and despite their current bad blood, this always shines through. All you want is for them to get back together and stop being useless lesbians, but alas, that is the point. Despite their awkward first love, when they start flirting it makes everything feel tingly all over.
Their interactions are cute, but their potential relationship is challenged by their society and standing in many ways and it does get addressed without hesitation that same-sex love is not an easy path to take, on top of their inherent issues with their school life and future prospects.
For a little bonus, there is a subplot about another character's romance with another woman that enhances the themes even more.

Blackberry Honey
Synopsis:
Set in England during the mid-19th century, Blackberry Honey is a tale about maids, music, and unexpected romance.
The story begins when our heroine, Lorina Waugh, is fired from her previous position as a maid in the stately home of Hartwell. With a large family back in Liverpool to support and a string of unsavoury comments circulating about her rather sudden dismissal, Lorina’s search for a new place of employment leads her to Bly.
Forced to work for fourteen hours a day, with little chance to rest, Lorina is bullied by the senior maids and, most embarrassingly of all, by the twelve-year-old daughter of the Lennard family, Lady Constance.
One of the only maids who deigns to speak to Lorina is the mysterious Taohua – but Lorina wishes she wouldn’t. Despite her lowly status, Taohua has her own private bedroom, never goes to church with the rest of the servants, and rarely interacts with anybody. Her aloof, almost cat-like personality, coupled with her peculiar complexion, eyes, and name, have inspired more than a few rumours around the Shropshire countryside that she might be a witch.
Lorina knows she should keep her distance from Taohua, and she wants to most desperately… but maybe there’s a pinch of truth to all the rumours, because she soon finds herself under the older woman’s spell.

Blackberry Honey is historical fiction done right, with a deeply immersive writing style, good atmopshere and beautiful art. The relationship between Lorina and Tao is at the center of the tale, but there is a lot more going on around them. The story is bittersweet, with many trying times and also solace found in the arms of each other.
Perhaps ebihime's most popular work, Blackberry Honey is highly recommended across yuri fandoms and stands the test of time with its grounded historical narrative.
Yuri content:
The major focus of this story is of course on the developing romance and that is also what it most exceeds at. With a slightly dark and painful story like this, how that romance will end up may be uncertain, but you owe it to yourself to see it through.
The game features sexual content, but there is also an all ages version. For Steam an 18+ patch is required to unlock the sex scenes.

Samurai Maiden
Synopsis:
A young woman from the 21st century with sharp swordsmanship skills finds herself in Honnō-ji during the Sengoku period! Together with a trio of newfound ninja friends, she races through the Underworld beneath Honnō-ji, confronted by enraged corpses at every turn!
Recommendation:
Samurai Maiden is a competent hack 'n slash game reminiscent of Sengoku inspired Musou titles. Unlike in most of those games, you only control one character though, Tsumugi. She is aided by three ninja girls who will come in as assists and provide her with new skills as they grow closer. Thus getting more intimate with the ninja girls directly correlates to more power ups and moves in the game. In fact there is a secret technique that powers up Tsumugi in a super state, the "Devoted Heart" technique, which is triggered by her being intimate with the girls on the battlefield, with higher level versions even requiring them to kiss.
The plot is just an excuse to travel around slaying demons, but it is servicable. Of course you can't have a Sengoku story without Oda Nobunaga, who plays a supporting role and, as usual, the eventual villain.
The game's difficulties mostly revolve around how much you upgraded your weapons and abilities rather than actual player skill. Although it is possible to win hard encounters by pure skill alone, it is an incredibly drawn out affair, as you simply may not have the damage to deal with it at a reasonable rate. So it is not recommended to play on higher difficulties unless you grinded a lot or seek a challenge that strongly. Of course once all the ninja skill trees are unlocked replaying on higher difficulties may add more tactical way to play.
Yuri content:
The game truly revolves around Tsumugi's relationships with the three ninja girls that come to her aid to take down the demon threat at Honnō-ji. Though they start out less than impressed with her, over time they clearly develop romantic feelings for Tsumugi and she for them in return. The game is definitely set up as a harem story more than different heroine routes, as you are encouraged to unlock all skills... which as explained before are tied to bond episodes with the girls. The three girls are:
Iyo: A young and idealistic ninja and retainer of Nobunaga who quickly grows to respect and adore Tsumugi, who is the legendary maiden meant to defeat the demon lord. Her adoration also just as quickly turns into romantic love. This ninja who blows herself up with her bomb ninja tools, is the closest to a main heroine.
Hagane: A ninja from a futuristic alternate universe where her people predicted the end of the world from a multiversal threat, aka the demon lord. Although her arm is prosthetic the rest of her is quite human. She is the onee-san of the group and while she hides her true intentions behind an alluring smile, she quickly grows fond of Tsumugi and wants to monopolize her.
Komimi: A kitsune girl who comes from an alternate past and is a wielder of great magic. Older than she looks and incredibly tsundere, she is the mentor of the group while also filling the loli role. She is the most dismissive and antagonistic towards Tsumugi, but over time she grows infatuated with the honest and kind girl, so different from her conniving and cruel home.

Nights of Azure 1 & 2
Synopsis:
NoA1:
Save the world or the life of one girl... I decide my destiny!
The world was once ruled by the Nightlord. In that world lived a Saint, destined to become a sacrifice to the Nightlord, and a Holy Knight, with the power to use Servans. The meeting of the girls changed the fate of the world.
Take your Servans and fight accross "The Land Without Night" for the one you love!
NoA2:
A Tale of Three Beautiful Maidens Drawn to Each Other.
When three friends, deceived and separated by the tricks of darkness, find each other again, their bond shall become the light that will clear away the shadows and guide them towards the truth...
Beautiful maidens, Servans, battles and growth system - all these elements return in an evolved form in the second instalment of the gothic fairy tale action RPG series "Nights of Azure".
Recommendation:
Let's get this right out of the way at the start: NoA was supposed to be a trilogy. It's not. The third game never got made, so the second game does end on a cliffhanger. If you can get past that, let's talk about the games themselves.
NoA 1 and 2 are action games, but they play a little differently. Both got very mixed reception in that regard, with some prefering the first or the second gameplay wise. The same polarized opinions are aimed at the plot. NoA2 is often said to be a retread of NoA1, but it is slightly more refined. In the end these are action games where plot is secondary, but the world is atmospheric and intriguing and the protagonists are both very likable and believable in their motivations and love for the ones they wish to save. For a mainstream Japanese action game made by Koei of all things, it is truly an anomaly.
NoA2's story DLC is integral and should have been in the main game from the start. If you like the game, most definitely get it.
Yuri content:
Both games have explicit yuri, but it is a story that revolves around defying fate... without a conclusion about that fate. So while the romantic love is true, the outcome is kind of up to interpretation.

CRYMACHINA
Synopsis:
CRYMACHINA is an action RPG where mechanical girls strive to survive in a post-apocalyptic world to become “Real Humans.” But what does it mean to be a “Real Human”? Join the three playable main characters as they fight in fast-paced action RPG combat featuring a myriad of tactics to customize your weapons and challenge your foes. This heartwarming story of love, told by synthetic beings, will pull at the strings of your biological heart.
See for yourself whether happy catharsis awaits these mechanical girls as they cry, struggle, and overcome their fate.
Recommendation:
CRYMACHINA is both deep and shallow, tragic and hopeful, refined and janky. It's story and themes fascinate, it's gameplay not so much. The way character building is done is excellent and the four main girls are honestly the best part about it. Progression is gradual and some set pieces are actually astonishing. Even if everything in science-fiction has been done before, CRYMACHINA just does its tale really, really well. It asks philosophical questions about the nature humanity and what makes someone a person and actually has something to say about it. Androids, AI, human brain scans, colony spaceships and the apocalypse told through recovered memory entries, the story runs the whole gambit.
Rolua's artstyle, whether one considers it pretty or something else, is extremely distinctive. You will never mistake their art for anybody's else's and that is definitely impressive in an industry filled with same-ish anime girl designs. The way the 3D models reflect said art is interesting in that the 3D models look a lot better, but still keep a lot of what makes the 2D art distinct.
The action gameplay is servicable, giving players more than enough variety and combat styles to support the relatively short levels. Some cirticisms come from the fact that it is "too easy" compared to other action games, but that makes it a good entry into gaming for newcomers.
It is a game full of secrets to find, but unfortunately a lot of them are hidden behind grindy optional mission levels. To unlock all secret "tea parties" it's necessary to input all the secret location coordinates and beat the associated levels which were shared over one year on Twitter/X. You can find all 12 coordinates here
Yuri content:
There is a reason the main cast is all female. This is a yuri game through and through, telling a story about girls, whether human or not, forming bonds and proving their humanity through romantic love more than anything. Enoa is a pure AI, but she is in love with "humanity", yet there is a strong distinction between that platonic love and her romantic feelings. I dare not spoil anything more, but suffice it to say, this is a love story as much as it is a philosophical sci-fi tale.

Rabi-Ribi
Synopsis:
There never quite seem to be enough bunny girls in the world, so here is another for you aficionados out there. This 2D sidescrolling exploration platformer follows the adventure of Erina, whose humdrum life as a regular rabbit is turned upside-down when she finds herself in an unknown world and turned into a human (with rabbit ears)!
Along the way she meets the cheerful pink-haired fairy, Ribbon, who mysteriously chooses to stay by Erina’s side.
These unwitting heroes embark together on their quest to restore Erina’s life to normalcy, but who knows what troubles lurk, waiting for them…
Recommendation:
Rabi-Ribi is a classic Metroidvania that sometimes reaches bullet hell levels of action. The cute and cozy artstyle and dialogue often stand in stark contrast to the madness of the gameplay. Exploration, battle load outs and special skills are the key to going through Rabi-Ribi's world and uncovering the truth behind Erina's sudden human transformation as she searches for beloved master.
Along the way Erina will encounter many reoccuring side-characters and grow closer to her trusty companon Ribbon, a fairy who has her own mysteries to solve. Everyone loves rabbit girls in this universe and Erina does not want any of that attention, shy rabbit that she is.
The game features several difficulty settings that cater to all kinds of players. The easiest difficulty will help newcomers, while the highest difficulty is nothing short of masochism. With the DLC you can get some extra content, a new playable character and several cute costumes. There is even an option to turn the entire soundtrack orchestral, which is nice, because Rabi-Ribi's soundtrack is amazing as is.
There are official 4koma comic pages accessible from the main menu. I recommend reading them after beating the game, they will give you a new perspective on the cast...
The game is also Steam Workshop compatible, allowing you to play fanmade content right from the game! That might be a reason to get it on Steam.
Yuri content:
The game features an all-female cast and heavily leans into the yuri shipping. By the end there are at least two confirmed yuri couples. I won't spoil which ones!

Volcano Princess
Synopsis:
Welcome to the Volcano Kingdom!
The Volcano Goddess has blessed the land of her people. She brought prosperity to a country flourishing in a medieval era.
After the death of your late wife, you are left alone to parent your daughter. So the question remains, how will you raise her, and what kind of life will the choices you make lead her to?
Recommendation:
Volcano Princess steps into the footsteps of the Princess Maker series, but revolutionized the genre greatly, inspiring other games in its wake. Most importantly it restructures the way you play a raising sim. While the player takes the role of the father, most of the game is played as Rose (the daughter) and you directly take control of her actions. The switch between the home segments where the father decides on Rose's curriculum at the academy and can talk to the daughter are always just the opening and ending of each day.
The game is filled to the brim with content, side-jobs, events, NPCs to interact with, quests to fulfill, dungeons to raid and ways to improve the daughter's stats. The goal is to raise her until she is 18, when she will finally seek out a profession and pick a marriage candidate. Along the way one might fulfill the conditions for the True Ending of the game and find out the truth both about what is happening in the Volcano Kingdom and what is going on with the Owl Princess, a "vile witch" who controls the demons in the forest that threaten the kingdom. The True ending is not mutually exclusive from any other profession or romance ending, meaning you can always get both.
No two playthrough have to be the same in this game where Rose can really do anything she wants. From the popular newly elected queen of the kingdom, to the demon lord, Rose can become anything she sets her mind to.
The English translation can be a little lacking in places, but overall the game is very much understandable.
Yuri content:
There are 7 female love interests for Rose in the game, which range from the best friend classmate, to the princess of the kingdom herself. While Rose gains affection with these women and goes through their personal bond episodes, she can gift them presents, take them on dates and eventually win their hearts. All 7 love interests can be married, except for Conny who is a nun at the church and thus is not allowed to get married, but she will still be Rose's lover. In case one does really badly in the game and has not enough affection with any of the major love interests there is still a possibility for Rose to get married to two different faceless unknown NPC women depending on her very low stats. There are also two polyamory yuri endings in the game.
The marriage endings happen at the end of the game where Rose turns 18, but the romances can start as early as at the age of 12 which might be a little unsettling for some.
Worth mentioning is that same-sex marriage seems to be perfectly normal in the Volcano Kingdom and two women even can have children with each other.

Signalis
Synopsis:
A classic survival horror experience set in a dystopian future where humanity has uncovered a dark secret. Unravel a cosmic mystery, escape terrifying creatures, and scavenge an off-world government facility as Elster, a technician Replika searching for her lost partner and her lost dreams.
Recommendation:
Signalis has been an incredibly successful throwback to old PS1 Survival Horror, without most of that era's downsides. Quality of life, art design inspired by 90s sci-fi anime and environemental storytelling are impeccable. The different endings depend on your actions, reminiscent of another horror classic, Silent Hill. And just like SH, Signalis is psychological, vague and deeply unnerving. The kicker? The entire story revolves around the romantic relationship between Elster and her partner, who she is trying to find in the hellscape that the station has turned into.
The game is inspired by gritty and challenging horror games, but it is far more fair than those used to be and should give newcomers at least more of a chance. However, if you scare easily, this game is not for the faint of heart.
Yuri content:
Elster's entire quest revolves around her girlfriend and her memories of their relationship. This goes much deeper than it may first appear and indeed, one could say the entire game is steered by the love of these two characters. It is a psychological horror game in the end, so perhaps one should not be too hopeful for a happy ending. But there is also no rule that one cannot exist.

Life is Strange
Synopsis:
Play as Max Caulfield, a photography senior who discovers she can rewind time while saving her best friend Chloe Price from a violent altercation.
The pair soon find themselves investigating the mysterious disappearance of fellow student Rachel Amber, uncovering a dark side to life in Arcadia Bay. Meanwhile, Max must quickly learn that changing the past can sometimes lead to a devastating future.
Recommendation:
Life is Strange is a landmark in narrative gaming and also for sapphic narratives in mainstream media. While the game was awkward, clunky, full of cringe, clearly written by adults who don't understand what teenagers are actually like... it still had an earnest core and captured the hearts of a large audience. The mystery is engaging, the time powers interesting and as silly as they are, the characters are the heart of the story.
The choices Max can make seem mostly binary and some affect little if anything at all, but most of them serve the moment to moment experience. It's not a game that you should constantly scrutinize, but instead just let it take you for a ride. You can save people or doom people, but it's all personal decisions grounded in your emotional investment.
Yuri content:
Like most things in this game, the major female love interest for Max, her childhood friend Chloe, is extremely polarizing. She is a character that is hard to love and easy to hate, but that makes her painfully relatable to many. The story is intrinsically linked to her, she cannot be ignored, she must be at the center of Max's slowly unraveling world. Whether Max admits to herself that her feelings are romantic or not, Chloe will be important to her regardless.
Max is implied to be bisexual, with her having a very minor option to show interest in her close male friend Warren, however it is so minor that most people would not even notice. And it never goes anywhere, unlike with Chloe.
Chloe herself is an actual lesbian and was also in love with the missing girl she is looking for, Rachel Amber. In the "Before the Storm" prequel included in the Remastered Collection, you play a younger Chloe getting drawn into a spiral of emotional turbulance when she tries to get closer and closer to the social butterfly and ever popular Rachel.
If you are interested in a well made AU where the world is focused on Max dating girls, check out Love is Strange, a yuri visual novel fan game. It might wash the bad taste from your mouth after the heavy themes of the main game.

Glossary
Here I will list every tag with a description of its specific meaning and context.
Essentials are games that are overwhelmingly popular and recommended by the yuri community. These are either considered the highest quality or cultural landmarks for yuri games. They are not objectively the best, but favored by the majority.
This tag does not mean that only newcomers to the yuri genre can enjoy the listed games, it is merely meant to display that it is good at easing in people who were not exposed to much yuri before. These games can range from more mainstream titles where yuri is an aspect, but not the overwhelming focus, to just very vanilla stories that show off the beauty, cuteness and themes of yuri.
This tag does not mean that only people new to games can enjoy the listed games. Its purpose is merely to list games that have an easy barrier of entry, are not generally mechanically overbearing or at least gradually adjust non-gamers to their systems. If a game has a very easy and very hard difficulty setting it can still receive this tag.
・Selectable Protagonist Gender・
Games tagged with this allow the player to pick their main character's sex, either at the beginning of the game or down the line.
・Selectable Sexuality (protag/love interest)・
Games tagged with this will let you select the option to have the protagonist and/or the love intersts identify as a lesbian/bisexual etc. This is a rare feature in most games, but very common in CYOA. This is not used for games in which the love interests' sexuality seemingly automatically changes depending on what sex your protagonist is.
Computer Role Playing Games or Classic Role Playing Games are RPGs that are either from the 70s to early 00's or are reminiscent of games of that type. They generally are isometric and focus heavily on roleplaying and tend to have an option for pausable turn based combat. Methodical, exploration focused and text heavy, that is the essence of most CRPGs. The term has more varied definitions and is not always agreed upon by the public court of the internet and the "computer" in CRPG has long since become irrelevant as such games are also regularly released on consoles nowadays. Although a certain degree of clunkiness and a hard to approach image are associated with the genre, more modern takes on it have become much more accessible for the general audience.
Japanese Role Playing Games are Japan's take on the RPG genre. Although inspired by Western CRPGs in most part, the genre has evolved and become uniquely Japanese in style. Despite having the word Japan in it, many studios outside Japan have adapted the JRPG style so perfectly that they are counted towards the genre. JRPGs are often associated with flashy action, anime artstyles, certain tropes and themes (like killing gods by the end). However, like most genres, not all games labeled JRPG fit neatly into the same folder. There are JRPGs that heavily emulate Western RPGs with only an added anime artstyle, while others are hybrid games that fit into several genres.
Dungeon Role Playing Games are a specialized strand of RPG that focus mostly on first person dungeon exploration. It's an old genre that was most popular in the 70s-90s and usually features big labyrinthine maps with many floors in which you advance one tile at a time and trigger either events or run into enemies. The genre was originally started in the West, but Japan has taken an equally strong liking to it. DRPGs are often described as a more hardcore type of RPG that is heavily resource management focused and very grindy. "Unfair" or brutal mechanics are commonplace, so methodical and calculated play is favored.
Strategy Role Playing Games also known as Tactical Role Playing Games (TRPG) focus on a mix of role playing and strategy gameplay. They tend to be turn based, grid based and generally allow the player to think through each move they are going to make for the perfect play. In simple terms it could be compared to chess, except the pieces are varied characters of different classes with skills and an RPG like leveling progression. Often there is a heavy focus on unit preservation, so you want to avoid losses as much as possible. Equipment, positioning and terrain are highly important. While some SRPGs are nearly purely mechanical, a lot of them also feature extensive storylines, mostly told through text and dialogue. A mechanic to pair up units and grow their relationship level the more they are used together has been popularized over time.
RPGmaker is the name of a game creation tool/engine that has gone through many iterations. Many games not made with this software are still erroneously categorized as RPGmaker games due to the similarities of other game creation tools. The software is Japanese in origin and the majority of games of this type are made there too. Even though in essence RPGmaker games have the most in common with JRPGs they tend to have a very distinct style and mechanics, due to them all using the same framework and engine. RPGmaker games by no means have to be actual RPGs. The software has been used to create purely narrative games and also very popular horror games.
Visual Novels are basically novels with art and sound. The most basic ones display text on screen with a background image and some character sprites and maybe a dialogue box. The most advanced have fully animated CGs, amazing orchestral music compositions and even a variety of gameplay. Generally VNs are separated by being kinetic or choice based. Kinetic VNs are just like a standard novel, telling an uninterrupted story from start to finish. The majority of VNs are choice based instead and offer players choices for either branching narratives or different reactions in scenes. Most romance oriented VNs with choices have "routes" one can follow that focus on different characters/heroines/plot points. There are also many that feature "True Endings" which are the canon outcome to the story as well as "Bad Endings" which are dead ends or bad outcomes that end the game prematurely.
Choose Your Own Adventure was originally a genre of novels in which the reader had to make choices and then skip to the associated page, giving the story several directions and outcomes. These days there are writing engines that allow for a more sophisticated and elaborate way to do these CYOAs. These "games" are focused on maximum player choice and tend to have vastly branching events depending on said choices. The market is dominanted by the Choice of Games publisher, but there are also free creator sites that allow people to make works without restrictions like chooseyourstory.com. These are still in essence novels and rarely feature art or sound.
Action games is an all-inclusive term for a variety of games. These can range from Action RPGs to 3D exploration games with combat and so on. Character Action is a specific subgenre mostly focused on flashy and in-depth combat (e.g. the Devil May Cry series). Mech Battle games often fall into this category as well, unless they are heavily simulation focused.
Platform Games derive their names from the early days of 2D side-scrollers in which the most simplistic gameplay had the player jump from platform to platform to reach a goal. The Super Mario series of games was synonymous with this. These days platformers are rather varied, from highly immersive 3D gameplay, to Metroidvanias using platforming as a major selling point. These games tend to be light on story and heavy on gameplay execution.
Farming Sims are a sub-genre of simulation games and have become an RPG hybrid in many cases as well. Their distinct focus is generally simulation of farming life in a small town where one may grow closer to the townspeople while improving their home and earning more riches along the way. Expanding one's means of production and earning affection with villagers to either romance or marry them are the main draws for most of these games. The RPG hybrids often also add combat as a major component, where grinding ingredients from monsters and wild animals is part of progression. This genre has become especially known for featuring a lot of same sex romance/marriage options since the 2020s.
Raising Sim is an umbrella term for a variety of simulation games. These can range from raising a child like in the Princess Maker series to raising a business or a colony. Sometimes Farming Sims are also put under this umbrella.
The term Dating Sim is highly debated among gamers and is used in a variety of ways, often contradictory. In its most base essence it is a genre of games where the goal is to get romantically involved with characters. The oldest titles did this by achieving certain stats and scores in personal traits that made the protagonist more successful and appealing and by going on many successful dates, hence the genre name. Many people conflate or associate romantic Visual Novels with dating sims due to their similar goals and sometimes overlapping methods. It's a loose term, but it conveys the idea at least. These days genres like Farming Sims have their own dedicated Dating Sim mechanics, so it is a tag that easily cross-pollinates. Older titles also often led to sexual content as a reward for your efforts.
Metroid + Castlevania = Metroidvania. This term came to be in response to the release of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The first Castlevania to change up its formula to emulate Metroid's map exploration and "lock and key" progression system, while adding RPG mechanics and mostly retaining Castlvania style combat. Since then the term and genre got popularized enough to receive their own tag on most gaming platforms. Attempts to find a new word not associated with existing franchises have failed many times, so we just accept this term. Metroidvanias can vary wildly in approach and style, but ultimately still follow the same intrinsic 2D Metroid formula. RPG mechanics like in Symphony are actually less frequent. 3D Metroidvanias are a debated topic, but in essence many RPGs and Fromsoft games follow a similar structure. The genre is also marked by a heavy Platformer influence, to the point where the only popular platforming games used to be Metroidvanias for a while.
Turn Based Strategy games and Real Time Strategy games are a subgenre of the more general Strategy game tag. However, these days all strategy games can basically divided in these two types. TBS are focused on methodical turn based combat, building and research, which give the player time to think and consider each move. RTS are active in gameplay and require quick thinking and reactionary play, mostly focused on army/fighter management on the field/dungeon. While general research and improvement of buildings and units is common, these are not treated as RPG mechanics and SRPGs or turn based JRPGs are not considered part of this genre. Base building is a major aspect of this genre, but there are outliers.
Puzzle games focus on solving puzzles, riddles or questions. Usually this is a sub-tag, not the main focus.
Mystery games are games focused around solving a mystery or dealing with a mystery. They are often detective games or exploration games. The tag does not mean that it's a mystery what the game is about.
Horror is one of the oldest game genres. Just like in movies or novels, the tag is used for games with stories that are made to scare, terrify or unsettle the audience. This tag is not used for anything a player might find scary, but rather for games whose intent is to scare. The genre is so widespread and varied that it is hard to nail down beyond that. Survival Horror is a subgenre, because it is more focused on dealing with the horror than to scare you. There are "walking simulators" that act more as Haunted House simulators. There are even horror action games where you play the horror monster yourself to terrorize others (often in multiplayer).
First Person Shooters, Third Person Shooters and "Boomer Shooters" are all variations of shooting based games. In essence if your goal is to gun down enemies in real time combat that is a shooter. The nuances between the three are that first person shooters are experienced from the perspective of the player character, meaning you see the world directly though their eyes for immersion. You can see your hands and the weapon you hold and look in all directions. Third person shooters are zoomed out and show you your entire player character, letting you control them conventionally. "Boomer Shooters" are a specific style of first person shooter inspired by the earliest shooter games like DOOM which are fast paced, gory and tend to have maze like maps where one has to collect keys or items to progress while shooting through massive hordes of enemies (the shooter equivalent of DRPGs in many ways). Contrary to the three tags' names, these games do not have to exclusively feature firearms. Melee weapons are a common option as well.
Rhythm games are music focused games in which the player tends to input button combinations on the beat of a song or melody. From simple button presses to more involved motions across the screen, the main focus is on reaction time and execution. The genre heavily features touch controls on mobile apps and tablets, as the finger tends to be more precise than a mouse. There are some special variations like platformers, side-scrollers or even dungeon exploration games with rhythm mechanics.
Roguelikes and Roguelites are games inspired by the oldschool game Rogue. The main characteristics of the Roguelike genre are procedurally generated maps, dungeon grids, permadeath and constant upward progression via upgrades obtained either at the beginning of a "run" or during it. Often isometric views and pixelated artstyles are the standard. The genre has advanced a lot over time, often including hard progression triggers and permanent upgrades as well as storylines and dialogue now, which have led to the creation of the term Roguelite. A new subgenre of "deckbuilder roguelikes" has also sprung up which focuses on card battling with similar permadeath and chance mechanics.
Card Battlers are similar to trading card games (TCG), featuring duels and tournaments and deck progression. However the deckbuilding tends to be more simplistic, not require booster packs and certainly not thousands of cards. They are mostly focused on quick and rewarding matches and progression through a gauntlet or storyline. They can be singleplayer focused or multiplayer, but they don't tend to have ban lists or constant balance adjustments. There are variations like card summoning games where one spams cards to summon units to battle other armies and often TCGs also receive the tag just due to association. Card Battlers can also often lean into the Roguelike genre.
Gacha games are a Japanese invention which focuses on rolling for characters, gear, weapons or other intrinsic gameplay elements with a certain rate of obtaining rarer versions. Rarity is divided in categories, but it is pure chance what one gets. These are generally monetized games that make their money from people rolling for their goal. This mechanic has been implemented into a variety of genres, such as RPGs, Idle Games and even Visual Novel style narrative games. Gacha itself is less of a game genre and more of a game mechanic really, but the similarities between all gacha games are undeniable. This term is not applicable to lootbox or gambling games, although they are drawing from the same source. Unlike those genres, gacha are far less restricted by laws and far more dangerous at exploiting its playerbase. Be cautious and use restraint. However, a lot of gacha are entirely playable in a F2P (free to play) system, so do not be discouraged by the scummy moneygrubbing techniques and focus on what you care about.
This tag is applied to narrative focused games that are neither Visual Novels nor CYOAs, but also don't fit into any particular game genre category. Games like Life is Strange or the Telltale games series are examples of this.
MMO (Mass Multiplayer Online) games are a genre of games that found their genesis alongside the mainstream boom of the internet. Games like Runescape and World of Warcraft were the big entry points for the genre. It started with RPGs that have a strong co-op and social component, but there have been many types of MMOs since. Life sims, shooters, superhero battlers, exploration games. As long as there are large open severs in which people can chat and interact while doing quests or going through some kind of gameplay loop, it can be roughly defined as an MMO. Not to be confused with games that have multiplayer lobbies.
This tag is for games that feature any sort of explicit sexual content. Implied sexual acts or vague descriptions do not count.

HellaYuri Steam Curator
The gaming platform Steam has a curator function. HellaYuri is a group created by Hanako Games which made it its goal to list and review every single yuri game on Steam. It is the most extensive resource on Steam's yuri games. However, the list is neither sorted nor divided by categories beyond "Recommended/Informational/Not Recommended". And counter-intuitively, an "Informational" review does not mean the game lacks in yuri content and "Recommended" does not mean it is a good game. The curator's sole focus is on whether the game contains yuri and to what degree. Informational reviews are given to games where yuri is only one aspect or optional.
HellaYuri also considers transgender women viable for its yuri listings, but they will always mention this in the reviews, so unless it slipped by them you will never be recommended a transgender game without warning.

Visual Novel Database (VNDB)
This website's goal is to make a complete database of all Visual Novels ever released. They have a tagging system that makes it easy to find what you are looking for. To find games that exclusively feature yuri romance, it is necessary to search the tag "Girl x Girl Romance Only".
Here is a link to that tag https://vndb.org/g1986?fil=tagspoil-0.tag_inc-1986
Nepchan
This is a database specifically for RPGmaker and doujin games. It is a sister site to VNDB, but a lot less extensive. They have a Yuri tag as well.
Here is a link to games tagged yuri. https://nepchan.org/g97
Yuri CG Pastebin
A /u/ anon created a list of Yuri CG galleries in the past. It mostly links directly to certain doujin sites. This list is rather outdated and probably won't be updated anymore, but it still makes it easy to find some yuri game CGs.
