"...the youngest headmaster of Storm Academy, Slayer of the ooze kraken, Breaker of -"
"Heavens, Calsey! I dun't want to introduce myself to every lord and leader in such a boastful manner."
"You do if you want to get on their good side."
"Should I accompany the affair with song and dance too? I'm nervous enough about this trip as it is. How about just: 'Hello, I'm Robin from Storm Island. I've been sent here by the Great Astrologer Hedwin to offer my services. As you know the world is ending, I'd appreciate it if you would let me interview your people on the side. Oh, and here are some books from our great library!' Whatdoyouthink?"
"Nope. Off with your head! How dare you waste my time! Don't you know I'm a busy lord!"
"Fine. I'll do the ridiculous titles first.... and brush up on my dancing."

Travel Journal

Day 0

I am preparing to leave Storm Island. My time as the interim headmaster has been short, but my heart goes out to the frightened students. The signs are clear; the world is ending. My first stop will be the heart of the empire to see what preparations are being made there.

Day 1

The storms raged more fiercely today, like they're unhappy with my departure. The senior students gathered in the eastern dock to see me off. I assured them that Hedwin and Balthazar would keep them safe. I'm horrible at goodbyes. My heart longs to turn the ship around and go back home. Abbadon be damned.

Day 5

The voyage has been arduous to say the least. Even sailors struggle against the turbulent seas. It's scary but I trust in the magic that keeps us afloat. I distract myself by practicing introductions, much to Calsey's amusement. I wonder what would happen if I dropped the lamp in the water.

The Headmaster was kind at least. He took my hand and bade me sit before he gently explained the council's decision. It was a matter of the proper form, he said. I had not completed the test properly. I had not returned to Storm Island alone. Were I to be allowed to call myself a storm mage without completing the ordeal, other apprentices might press for other exceptions. 'We cannot have any weakening of the customs of the storm mages, for the mages are too important to our survival,' he told me. But no, it would erode the faith of those around me to have to work with me. The island might belong to my family name, but I am not one of them, and so it was for the best that I take my lantern and my years of study and all the spells I had learned and go become a sailor or sentry upon the balustrade.

That is what Balthazar said. But the truth is, it wasn't for the lack of completing the ordeal. It was because he no longer trusted me. More precisely, he did not trust me upon returning in the company of the cursed Ghost Lantern. So now, in a great irony, I study with the ghost. I listen to her tales, her time spent in between worlds. She speaks truths others dare not utter, and for this alone she was branded a heretic. And through her words I hone my skills.

How tragic that we mages reach for the same goals, and yet cannot reach together. But now, that the end of the world is coming, perhaps I can find others beyond Storm Island that will reach with me.
