Audry Kathleen Snook Gragert, 57, of Canyon, died Friday, May 22, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Canyon with Robert Civil officiating. Burial will be at Dreamland Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
She was born June 29, 1957, in Dumas, Texas to O.J. and Lorene (Samples) Snook. She grew up south of Dumas most of her childhood. She graduated from Dumas High School in 1975. In 1979 she earned a bachelorโ€™s degree in education from Oklahoma State University, and went on to receive a masterโ€™s degree in special education from Northwestern Oklahoma University.
She married Eldon Gragert on May 1, 1981, in Hooker, Okla. They lived in Adams, Okla., where Audry taught kindergarten and special education for seven years. While they continued to live near Adams for about 30 years, Audry taught special education for Hooker Public Schools for 27 years. She had a love for children of all ages and had a unique ability to see them for their abilities and potential, rather than their disabilities and limitations. Early in her career at Hooker, she taught students from Pre-K through high school simultaneously. She later went to the junior high and high school, where she taught special education. However, in the classroom she also counseled many students through difficult situations. She didnโ€™t simply teach the subjects, but cared for each student in any way needed.
Eldon and Audry were a team, and she was a devoted caregiver to him when his health took a hit. They moved to Canyon, Texas in 2011, although she continued to teach for the remainder of the school year. This allowed her to live with her college roommate, Nancy Tolento, and come to Canyon on the weekends. She cherished that time with her dear friend, making new memories.
She had two children, Amanda and Ojay, to whom she was a wonderful mother, making games out of things as simple as vacuuming the house or folding laundry. She emphasized education and new experiences. She opened her home and welcomed the friends of her children, as well as foreign exchange students. She was a โ€œmomโ€ to many. She retired from teaching in 2012, to become a full-time GiGi to her granddaughter, Sydney. They spent countless hours doing crafts, baking and going to the park.
She was preceded in death by her parents
