A STUDY IN LIGHTNING-CLAD FURY.
BACKGROUND.
Diederik was a Kerch, born and raised in the heart of Ketterdam. His blood was of prominent and esteemed pedigree; as the heads of Nieuwenhuizen family had been a member of the Merchant Council, becoming one of thirteen most prestigious and powerful families in the country. His family owned an iron ore mine and tobacco fields in Novyi Zem—and it expanded to the production of gunpowder as the business bloomed. Nonetheless, the family's prestige eventually declined when all members of the family were infected with the Queen's Lady Plague. The plague claimed Diederik's mother first, before his father and his older siblings. This predicament was then used against his family by a rival businessman, Berkenbosch, to drive the business into ruins and the distant relatives of Nieuwenhuizen to snag the remaining inheritance. As his family was no longer publicly active, there was only Diederik and his younger sister, Hanneke; a Grisha Healer, who decided to depart to Ravka and serve in the Second Army. His family's business was acquired by Berkenbosch and his family's legacy and reputation were all but naught. In the end, Diederik was extradited and forced to live in East Stave, where he began to work in gambling dens before working his way up the rank of one of the prominent gangs as an enforcer until he became the right hand man of the gang leader in the Barrel.
