Privacy Policy for Lecture Transcriber
Last Updated: September 8, 2025

This Privacy Policy describes how the Lecture Transcriber Chrome Extension ("the Extension") collects, uses, and handles your data. Your privacy is important to us, and this policy is designed to be transparent about our practices.

By using the Extension, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

  1. Information We Collect and Why
The Extension is designed with user privacy as a core principle. All data processing occurs locally on your computer.

Audio Data: The Extension requests permission to access your microphone to capture audio. This audio is used exclusively for the purpose of converting your speech into text (transcription) in real-time. The audio data is processed locally by your browser's built-in Web Speech API and is not sent to, stored on, or processed by our servers.

Transcribed Text Data: The text generated from the audio transcription is stored locally on your computer using the Chrome Storage API (chrome.storage.local). This is done to preserve your transcription if you close the recording window, ensuring your work is not lost.

We do not collect any personal information, analytics, or tracking data.

  1. How Your Information Is Used
Your data is used solely to provide the core functionality of the Extension:

To transcribe your speech into text.

To display the live transcription within the Extension's persistent window.

To save your transcription locally for your convenience.

To allow you to export your transcription to other applications.

  1. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not share, sell, or disclose your data with any third parties. You have full control over your data. The Extension provides the following user-initiated sharing option:

Export to NotebookLM: You can choose to export your transcribed text by clicking the "NotebookLM" button. This action copies the formatted text to your computer's clipboard and opens a new tab to the Google NotebookLM website. This action is entirely optional and initiated by you.

  1. Permissions Requested
The Extension requires the following permissions to function correctly, as defined in the manifest.json file:

storage: This permission is required to save your transcribed text locally on your device.

activeTab: This permission is used to allow the Extension to interact with your currently active tab when you invoke it, without needing broader access to your browsing history.

  1. Your Rights and Data Control
You have complete control over your data.

You can view your transcribed text at any time within the Extension.

You can delete your stored transcription at any time by using the "Clear" button.

  1. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
  2. Contact Us
