It was first documented in 1819 and is among of the least-known Neotropical parrots, with occasional sightings in the wild and a few birds that are kept in captivity and a few museum specimens.
To protect the declining population In order to save the declining population, an international group was established. It brought together aviculturists who held the last remaining bird as well as officials from the government. This group formed a collaboration with the world-renowned non-profit organization Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation of Qatar to develop an initiative to restore the population of Spix's Macaws to their natural environment.

Diet
The Spix's Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) is the only species in the genus Cyanopsitta. To aid, ABC and partners have created a reserve system which aims to protect the species' last remaining habitats. The eight Spix's macaws will be joined by blue-winged macaws which are more common in the Caatinga and share areas with Spix's macaws. These smart birds will help macaws to become accustomed to the region and will offer safety in numbers.
