THE HISTORY OF THE ENNEAGRAM

The earliest appearance of the enneagram that has been historically documented is in the teachings of Georges I. Gurdjieff (ca. 1870-1949), which are recorded in the books of his student Piotr D. Ouspensky. The first documented correlation of the nine points on the enneagram to nine personality types is in the teaching of Oscar Ichazo. While Gurdjieff considered the enneagram to contain the key to knowledge of all that is in the cosmos, it was Ichazo in the 1960s who first developed a theory of nine personality types corresponding to the nine points of the enneagram.
