Boundaries

⠀⠀•⠀I am heavily non-sharing. This is not to be "quirky" or chronically online, I am just deeply uncomfortable with interacting with other Bucky selfshippers. My relationship with him is very special to me and brings me great comfort. I prefer to keep that connection private and separate from other interpretations or romantic attachments, as seeing them overlap can make it feel less safe and less personal for me. I don’t see it as a discussion or a community space for me, but something quiet and contained that I don’t really want external input on. I ask that this boundary be respected without question or debate.

⠀⠀•⠀I am okay with talking with other fans, not selfshippers. At the end of the day, Bucky is a fictional character that we all enjoy. I would love to talk about him with other people, as long as you don’t try to compete with me or compare personal interpretations in a way that crosses into romantic/selfship territory. I’m happy to share thoughts, headcanons, and general enjoyment of his character in a casual fandom sense. Feel free to send me a message on my Atabook, don't be a stranger.

Headcanons

⠀⠀•⠀Bucky is Jewish. This is a more popular headcanon but I 100% believe it. Considering the time period it's not that much of a stretch. Many Jews immigrated to the US during the 1900's. The Jewish population in Brooklyn skyrocketed from roughly 100,000 to over 800,000 between 1905 and 1930. By 1925, nearly half of New York City's Jewish residents resided in Brooklyn. I also like this headcanon because of the parallels to Arnie Roth, Steve Rogers best friend in the comics who was also openly gay and Jewish. I also feel like Bucky being Jewish adds so much more to his character, enlisting in the army to fight Nazis.

⠀⠀•⠀Bucky has DID/OSDD. I know this one is more interpretive than some headcanons, but I genuinely think it fits the MCU version of his character. Bucky endured decades of extreme trauma: torture, memory wiping, cryogenic freezing, forced assassinations, and repeated dehumanization under HYDRA. It makes sense to me that his mind would cope through dissociation and fragmentation. So much of his story centers identity confusion, missing memories, feeling disconnected from his own actions, and struggling with the divide between "Bucky Barnes" and "The Winter Soldier." I don’t see the Winter Soldier as some separate evil persona, but as a trauma-created part of him built to survive impossible circumstances. I also like this headcanon because it adds even more depth to his recovery arc—his healing isn’t about becoming one "good" version of himself again, but learning to accept every part of himself with compassion.

⠀⠀•⠀Bucky canonically (MCU) can speak 8 languages (English, Russian, German, Romanian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Xhosa), however I don’t think he’d use the majority of them because of his past as the Winter Soldier. A lot of those languages were likely learned or reinforced during missions, interrogations, and HYDRA conditioning, so speaking them might carry memories he doesn’t want to touch. I imagine some languages would feel less like communication and more like being dragged back into a role he never chose. The main languages I think he’d speak are Romanian and Xhosa, since the times we see him using those languages are tied to periods where he was relatively safe and living as himself. Romanian connects to the quiet life he built in Bucharest, where he was hiding but finally making his own choices. Xhosa connects to Wakanda, where he was given peace, healing, and the chance to recover without being treated like a weapon.

Reading Guides

⠀⠀•⠀To get started reading about Bucky Barnes (comics-wise) I recommend checking out this guide. It’s curated to give you a small starting point you can branch out from. This one is a much longer and more thorough reading guide I highly recommend checking out as well if you want something more in-depth. If you like reading about Bucky with other characters here's a Sambucky guide, a WinterWidow guide and a WinterHawk guide.

⠀⠀•⠀If you’re more interested in novels, The Winter Soldier: Cold Front by Mackenzi Lee is a book you must read. It’s the primary canon-adjacent novel focused on Bucky, exploring his life before and during his time as the Winter Soldier, including his youth and the programming process. It’s a hard read, especially if you love the character, but the story is really immersive and gives you a much clearer understanding of who Bucky is and what he went through.

Love Letters
December 8th, 2025

Start of my little loveblog... I love Bucky so much. Oh also here's an "in character" letter I wrote for him:

Buck, I ain’t good at this mushy stuff, so don’t laugh. Or do, I guess. Your dumb smile’s half the reason I’m writin’ this in the first place. I been tryin’ to figure out how a guy like me ended up with somebody like you, and before you say anything smart, yeah, I know I ain’t a catch. I’m stubborn, I swear too much, I leave my socks everywhere, and I hog the blankets. You remind me daily. But you… Buck, you look at me like I’m somebody worth stickin’ around for. Like I ain’t the sum of all my mistakes. Like I’m still that kid from Brooklyn who punched too far above his weight and hoped nobody noticed how scared he was. You make me feel... hell, I don’t know... safe. And that word don’t come easy to me. Sometimes I watch you when you ain’t lookin’. (Don’t make that face. Yeah, I’m bein’ sappy. Let me finish.) You get this soft look, around the eyes. Maybe you don’t even know you do it. But it’s the kinda look a man gets when he’s got somethin’ precious in his hands and he ain’t sure he deserves it. I know that look. 'Cause I get it every time I look at you. And I know we got our rough edges. We fight, we snap, we both got ghosts that wake up swingin’. You drive me crazy in every direction, Buck—north, south, sideways—and half the time I wanna kiss you just to shut you up. But I ain’t goin’ anywhere. Not again. You hear me? Not after everything. Not after the war. Not after losin’ you once, and then twice, and then more times than I can count. You’re it for me. You always were, even when neither of us had the guts to say it out loud. Even when all we had was a look across a barracks room and a promise we couldn’t name. Let me hold you ‘til the world stops spinnin’. You do that for me more times than you know. I love you, Buck. More than is useful for either of us. Yours, Hen.

P.S. If you tell Steve I wrote this, I’ll throw you off the fire escape.
