Empty Nostalgia

Light shines through the slits of the shut windows
Covered by the blinds that lap over each other,
Softly beaming through like golden strings of silk
The light shines softly, dust particles shimmer and glow,
Looking like flickering glitter in the air.
The room is dark, yet well lit by the small beams of light,
Desks sit still, waiting for children to come sit and learn
The dusty air smells like nostalgia
Chalk dust sits on the easel of the board.
The room is empty,
The room decorated with posters and drawings
Sits on the walls and on the tables,
Smiling faces on each drawing, scribbles of names,
Colors and more scribbles.
Outside the room, in a long hall that stretches for a few yards
No longer than 10 to 15 feet,
Adorned with bulletin boards with papers pinned to them
Announcements, lunch menus of the day, club advertisements, holiday dates,
They all read “nostalgia” on them.
The halls loop around in squares,
Some round turns, others with sharp turns,
T halls, four-ways, one hall, dead ends,
All are neatly organized with rows of doors to rooms
Small and large alike.
The doors are locked,
In the rooms sits more desks,
Some rooms decorated with mathematical equations,
Hanging Styrofoam planets,
English letters and posters of words with images,
And more.
The halls are empty,
The rooms are too,
Each desk is empty,
Giving a sense of a liminal space in our hearts.
This empty space;
Empty rooms,
Empty halls,
Empty desks
All remind us of our nostalgic childhood.
Missing the smiles, laughter, yelling of children that sat on these desks not so long ago,
Now empty…
Yet so full of bittersweet memories,
We love to remember the days we spent,
Learning, playing and laughing with each other.
This empty nostalgia fills my heart,
With the long memories of school
That starts to fade away with time.
