"Genocide CD"
(Reinterpretation of the Creepypasta "Genocide City/Sonic 2 Beta")
I have created this account solely to sell this CD. You will surely think that the price is absurd, but it is a unique edition that you will not find anywhere else. I have collecting as a hobby. An art as demanding as this requires very good management of the money and time you have, especially looking for true material. Many of the things that I now have in my display case are obtained from completely unreliable websites. Finding these artifacts that were not officially released in stores is complicated and risky. In most cases, they are a simple scam. But it is something that collectors take, a greater risk, the probability of a greater treasure. Although this world is not only based on putting you in danger of wasting money, it is a kind of casino, you would not find prototypes of games in the virtual store of a social network. So that you understand the magnitude of finding these things on unknown pages, I could only compare it to passing an exam without having previously studied, imagine yourself in that situation, it feels satisfying, right? Well, this is how I can describe these sensations.
I have all the information about what I have in possession, to know its origin, and to be able to give it a description, so that it looks more resplendent in the great display case. Three days ago, I received the package I requested, the header of the product for sale contained in the description. CDs without any purpose, tests, music, etc. But what led me to risk my money was that in the small text below the header, the seller mentioned that some CDs belonged to his brief jobs in video game companies that he did not want to mention, between 1990 and 1995. When I opened the light box, I realized that they had not even bothered to clean the contents. It was what I expected. Several discs, some completely scratched and unusable. Others who had a small paper bag that saved the aluminum layer from being ruined by dust particles.
Some came labeled with a marker, nothing interesting, popular songs from the 90s, pirated movies. But to the side, I could see what filled me with relief. They were names from old video games, but with random numbers, or at least that's what I thought at first. The first was Shin Megami Tensei. They were 3 copies of the same album, since they had a subtitle, which I assume was Japanese, which was repeated on each one. Its number was 02/15/1994. The next one was Mortal Kombat, this time there were 2 identical copies, another subtitle in Japanese, 01/03/1994. Finally, there were 3 copies of Sonic 2, with the number, 08/30/1992.
Before continuing to observe those relics that time has not damaged, as I always do, I researched those games on the internet. What caught my attention after a long time was that Mortal Kombat and Sonic 2 were games for the Sega Genesis, which used cartridges. I decided to stay a few more hours on the PC to continue investigating. I discovered that both games had exports for the then new console, he Mega CD. One arriving successfully in the case of Mortal Kombat, but, the other unfortunate one, not. I would confirm my assumptions by looking at the back of the paper bag of each of the CDs, they were marked, Sega Mega CD. I opened my large display case, to give he Mega CD I had a little time to use. I had first opted for Shin Megami Tensei, but my console did not recognize it. Out of the mere impulse of everything I had read before, I grabbed one of the 3 Sonic 2 discs. Fortunately, this one did recognize it, I had a fresh memory of the cartridge version, since from time to time, I give one or another a try to the games on that console, including Sonic games.
It started with Sonic running through the Sega logo. Then the title screen. Although the name of Sonic and Tails was presented at the beginning, the latter was not in the large medallion, there was only Sonic, making a number two with his hand.
I selected single player mode, it seemed to have frozen, but after a few seconds, there was a fade to black. I think it was loading the content. A CD is slower than a cartridge when it comes to transferring information to the console. At the beginning, there was a small scene, where Sonic was seen running behind Tails, while Eggman caught him with a metal claw, taking him away. Sonic accelerated more to go rescue Tails. Transitional scenes? The CD gave them more ability to extend the game's story. That explains the absence of the fox on the menu.
When starting Emerald Hill, and defeating Eggman, there was a small freeze on the screen for a few seconds. I was loading the next level, in this case, there was a scene where Sonic left the small valley to enter the huge toxic plant that is the Chemical Plant.
Each level felt the same as the version that was on the Sega Genesis, but with animated transitions between levels, and a short wait of about 4 seconds before continuing.
When finishing Aquatic Ruin, the transition did not point to Casino Night as the next area, but rather a level called Dust Hill. I remembered what I had read, Dust Hill had been eliminated due to lack of time. Or at least that's what Sega said. I got up from my seat. This is enough proof to save the CD and place it as a unique Sonic 2 prototype for the Mega CD. But. Genuinely. I was having fun.
He wanted to save Tails. I sat back down, and continued with more inspiration to win. This level is what you would expect from the name, sand, cacti, dry elements scattered all over the ground. The act would proceed normally, until I wanted to grab a ring. On the side of the screen a message appeared in English, which said. “An error has occurred with the item, Ring.”
It wouldn't let me grab it, if I touched it, that message would repeat itself until it covered the entire screen. It was better to ignore it, everything worked correctly except for that detail. I defeated Eggman, and the transition occurred, which led me to Casino Night.
Throughout the level I moved correctly, until that message appeared again, but it happened when I wanted to break a shield monitor, this time, it showed that the error was Monitor, underscore, shield. They had not given me any protection.
It bothered me, because because of it, I lost almost 400 rings that I had patiently collected. I defeated Eggman quite annoyingly. The next scene showed that what was next was Hill Top.
Nothing happened here. After overcoming the acts, I saw a giant tree looming at the bottom of the level, and Sonic, using a circular ramp, entered it. The name of this level was Wood, I was inside this large log. Unlike the others, this one was more labyrinthine, so I lost a few lives by trusting myself to reach a certain platform. But, the most unfair life, it happened because of an error message. When I made a calculated jump, the game froze for a short period of time. And when it resumed, two messages appeared “Error with object, Badnik, 1 and 2.” I lost my calculations with the jump, falling into the void. From that moment on, I started to be more careful, since that message could appear at any time. Eggman had a giant axe, which cut the platforms that appeared from the ground.
After freeing the animals from the capsule, Sonic went down a large log, directly entering a cave, arriving at Mystic Cave.
In this area I managed to get the last chaos emerald, the curious thing was that no message appeared about being able to transform into Super Sonic.
The game continued as if there was nothing else. Sonic got into a pipe, which transported me to Oil Ocean.
Nothing happened here that put me on alert, but there was a small cutscene longer than the others, a small earthquake throughout the plant, opening a large hole in the floor, swallowing all the oil, and Sonic in the process.
The Hidden Palace sign appeared. When I reached the end of the level, there was no boss. There was the usual sign. After the results for the score. There was a short wait of a few seconds, and the song playing in the Death Egg began. Sonic moved automatically. Tails stood on a large emerald, tied with a rope, and Eggman orbited above him, with a small flash on an antenna beneath his ship. Sonic jumped, and became Super Sonic. He gave a boost, grabbing Tails, before lightning struck him, destroying the emerald.
The screen quickly moved to the right, now showing Tails chasing Super Sonic. Again, the score results came out, but instead of saying that I passed act two, the message appeared, Sonic has saved Tails. With a bonus of 10,000 points, and the message. “Sonic can now transform into Super Sonic.” This time there was no transition, just a fade to black.
He had arrived in Metropolis. Now Tails followed me everywhere. But, as I moved forward a bit, I was greeted again with two error messages, which said. “It has not been possible to find the method. Method? I was confused, but I decided to finish the game first, and then I would investigate.
Everything went as it should, except for the occasional error message where they didn't count the rings I collected. Arriving at the Death Egg, I got the good ending where Super Sonic flies alongside Tails heading to Angel Island. After the credits, this time, the main menu showed Tails, and a flash at the number two, indicating the good ending.
I was satisfied with what I saw. I left the console on, and went to my computer, to resolve my doubts about that word. Method. I got tutorials about programming. I concluded that they were errors like the previous ones where the monitors or the rings did not count. Things about the internal workings of the game. I saw that I had left open the tab where I looked for information about Sonic 2, out of mere curiosity, I reviewed the article again. Quickly, I realized that something was missing, they mention that there are more deleted levels than I remember having completed. Dust Hill, Wood, Hidden Palace, more were missing, Winter, Rock World, and Cyber City, or Genocide City. It could be named in both ways. It intrigued me, could it be that the album I have only has the first 3? Or is there a way to unlock those levels?
Wanting to check further on my own, I decided to complete the game again, but without grabbing any emeralds. Everything went normally, until the Hidden Palace part. This time, when crossing the Eggman sign, the score results were not presented, it went directly to the cinematic. Sonic ran forward in an attempt to rescue Tails. But the lightning struck. It reached before Sonic.
A quick flash of white showed itself. Along with a small distorted sound. Sonic was lying on the ground. Tails, along with the emerald, had disappeared. Eggman left in his ship, laughing. Sonic was left alone on the ground, with a sad expression, the results of the level appeared, but without the melody that accompanies them. A black fade concluded this scene.
Metropolis began. But, it did not mark any act, it seems that on this route, there was only one. In this area, error messages were more frequent, especially those that mentioned methods. They even covered a large part of the screen. It was very annoying.
I received constant blows because the text did not allow me to see clearly. I lost two lives to the messages, but I managed to beat the level. The screen went black for a long time, I knew it was because it was loading, but it was a longer wait than the previous ones. The title of this area was Cyber City. With a single act. The structure was similar to Chemical Plant, but with the background of some kind of factory, along with a cloudy sky, and several mountains.
As with Metropolis, error texts were plentiful. I barely managed to win with just one life. When I touched the signal, there was a message that said “Switch number 15 has not been set.” This was becoming increasingly unplayable. Another long wait in black, and the Genocide City sign appeared, it seems like they were two different levels.
The entire area was in a purple tone, along with several mechanical structures in the background. I even thought it was the factory that was seen in the background of Cyber City. It was too complicated, the game was already completely broken at this point, the messages were constantly covering the screen, the rings were not detected, nor were the objects on the monitors. Since it was my last life, I had to move forward with the greatest possible care, I was not going to check if the enemies also worked by letting me hit without having any rings.
I decided to release the CD once I finished this insufferable level. But, before reaching the goal, a message appeared. “Too many bugs found, the game is going to restart.” The screen turned black, only to show the returned menu. What caught my attention the most, and the reason for not having turned off the console at that moment, was that Sonic was alone again. Tails was absent again.
I didn't want to leave everything there, I wanted the menu to have Tails, so I started the game a third time. This time, Emerald Hill started having error messages, some monitors, enemies, and rings were disappearing and flashing on the screen.
Upon entering the special phase, the messages again. They didn't tell me about the rings no matter how many times I walked over them, making it impossible to get the emerald.
The results screen formed texts that flashed, I don't know if it was due to the game being full of errors, but the phrase that was displayed was. “Sonic has entered Chaos.” I had become tense, because before I had none of that. Could it be that the CD was affected in some way? Before thinking about the worst. I changed the CD, for the other one that was also a Sonic 2. I went from a bad feeling to being a little terrified, the CD had those error messages, Tails was not there, nor could I get the rings.
Maybe it's my console? Or did this CD already come like this? I wasn't going to risk it with the third one, I prefer to leave it that way. After everything I saw, I understood why they never released a version of the second game for this peripheral, and the reason for always saying that it was only due to lack of time. Releasing a game with this kind of ending would leave them in a very bad position. Anyway. The CD that I am selling is the first, it will continue to be for sale, until someone deigns to pay the price, since it is something that I am sure, only I have.
I took out a Sonic 2 cartridge that I have in the display case, to place it in the Sega Genesis that I have here, connected to the Mega CD. When I see that small plastic, I feel a very heavy feeling in the environment. Terror? I doubt it. I would rather call it uncertainty. A rational part of me knows that a CD wouldn't affect the cartridge. But the other part is afraid. Afraid of what would happen if the menu only showed Sonic, without his best friend on it.
