❄️ ISVAEL ❄️
Realm & Culture
There are places where winter comes.
In Isvael, winter has a home.
✦ ISVAEL AT A GLANCE
| Realm | Isvael |
| World | The Otherworld |
| Capital | Saelith |
| Royal Seat | Ilyrath |
| Ruler | Amlaniir, the Ice King |
| Climate | Long winters • brief mild seasons |
| People | Fae • humans • human-Fae descendants |
| Time | ~1 year in Isvael = ~10 years in the mortal world |
Isvael is a realm of long winters, dark forests, frozen waters and mountains disappearing into pale skies.
Snow belongs here—but winter does not stand still.
Ice thaws. Rivers move again. Snowdrops push through frozen earth. Markets change with the season, fishing boats return to open water, and for a brief while the realm turns softer beneath the sun.
Isvael is not the whole of the Otherworld.
It is one realm among many.
And beyond its borders lie lands with different rulers, climates, peoples and stories of their own.
◇ THE OTHERWORLD
A World That Listens
The Otherworld is old, vast and alive in ways the mortal world is not.
Magic does not sit apart from nature here. It moves through bodies, roots, rivers, weather, food, architecture and ancient places. Sometimes the land itself seems to notice what passes through it.
A forest may know that something unfamiliar walks beneath its branches.
Water may carry more than sound.
Wind, roots, animals and growing things may pass whispers through a world whose awareness has never been entirely understood.
Not everything speaks.
Not everything watches.
And even the Fae do not possess every answer.
Some mysteries are old enough to have outlived their explanations.
❅ THE TURNING YEAR
Winter Does Not Last Forever
Winter is Isvael's longest season.
Snow settles deep across much of the realm, waterways freeze, mountain roads grow difficult and the forests become forests of bare branches, dark trunks and white earth.
But Isvael does not exist in eternal winter.
The change comes slowly.
Ice loosens first where currents remain strong. Snow retreats unevenly from roads, rooftops and lower ground. The city becomes wet and muddy before it becomes green, and old snow turns grey beneath thousands of feet.
Then come the first snowdrops.
For a realm accustomed to cold, spring is not merely a change in weather.
It is an event.
✦ BETWEEN WORLDS
Thresholds & Time
The mortal world and the Otherworld touch in particular places.
These crossings are known as thresholds.
Some are obvious.
Others may be so subtle that a mortal crosses one without realizing that anything has changed until the world on the other side is no longer their own.
The connections are regional and ancient, older than modern borders drawn upon mortal maps. Other parts of the human world may touch entirely different Fae realms.
Time also moves differently across the divide.
| Isvael | Mortal World |
|---|---|
| ~1 year | ~10 years |
Within Isvael, time feels perfectly ordinary. Days remain days; seasons turn; lives continue.
It is only when the two worlds are compared that the difference becomes cruelly apparent.
Humans have nevertheless crossed into the Otherworld for generations. Some eventually returned. Others stayed, found work, fell in love, married, raised families or simply discovered that somewhere once foreign had quietly become home.
Humans are uncommon in Isvael.
They are not unknown.
♔ ILYRATH
The Palace That Remembers
| Name | Ilyrath |
| Known As | The Palace That Remembers |
| Location | Above Saelith |
| Purpose | Royal seat • government • household |
| Ruler | Amlaniir, the Ice King |
| Known For | Ancient ice • narrative glass • living memory |
High above Saelith stands Ilyrath.
The palace rises across the mountainside in terraces of pale stone, marble, ancient ice and glass, softened by dark wood, woven textiles and warm metals in champagne and rose-gold tones.
It is beautiful.
It is also lived in.
Ilyrath is a royal residence, a seat of government, a workplace and a home. Courtiers cross the same halls as servants, artisans, guards, messengers and officials. Kitchens wake before much of the Court. Deliveries arrive. Fires require tending. Clothes need mending. Stone cracks. People gossip.
Even a Fae palace has chores.
❖ THE PALACE THAT REMEMBERS
Ilyrath is called The Palace That Remembers for good reason.
Its history is not kept only in books.
Memory has been worked into the palace itself.
Old events survive in architecture, objects, chambers and above all in its extraordinary glass.
❖ NARRATIVE GLASS
Windows throughout Ilyrath hold scenes rather than simple decoration.
Kings appear in them, certainly.
But so do lovers, artisans, humans, Brownies, ordinary Fae, celebrations, tragedies and people whose names may have been forgotten while their faces remain suspended in colored light.
Not every window tells a complete story.
Some preserve only a moment.
Others seem to invite questions no living person can answer.
Ilyrath remembers more than its rulers.
❖ THE THRONE HALL
The Throne Hall is built along a great royal axis of pale stone, marble, permanent ice and enormous panes of narrative glass.
Its great window opens the room visually toward Isvael itself: mountains, forests, snow and distant water beyond the palace.
The throne may belong to a King.
The view belongs to the realm.
🌱 THE PALACE GARDEN
The Sun Beneath Ilyrath
Beneath the palace lies something that should not fit beneath a mountain.
The Palace Garden stretches far beyond the space its entrance appears capable of containing.
A warm artificial sun hangs overhead. Paths wind between cultivated beds, orchards, flowers and waterways. Fruit grows beneath a mountain while snow lies above it.
Part garden and part working landscape, it supplies Ilyrath with fresh produce while also serving as one of the palace's most extraordinary spaces.
Its warmth is magical.
Its work is very real.
♔ COURT & SOCIETY
Blood Is Not the Same as Worth
Isvael is home to many peoples.
Some are High Fae. Most are not. Humans and human-Fae descendants form smaller communities among them.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| High Fae | Rare Fae historically prominent among older noble bloodlines |
| Ordinary Fae | The majority of Isvael's Fae population |
| Human | A small but established presence within the Otherworld |
| Halfling | A person of mixed human and Fae ancestry |
High Fae blood has historically carried social prestige, particularly among old families and the Court.
It does not mean every High Fae is wealthy, powerful or important.
Nor does ordinary Fae mean ordinary in ability.
A gifted artisan, healer, farmer, merchant or craftsperson may possess knowledge that no ancient prince has ever bothered to learn.
Amlaniir's Court adds another complication:
the Ice King likes beautiful things.
Ilyrath's royal household is famously curated according to standards that are not always limited to professional competence. The result is a Court of considerable beauty surrounding a King with extremely particular tastes.
The rest of Isvael is rather less interested in arranging itself for His Majesty's visual pleasure.
❦ SAELITH
Where Isvael Lives
| Status | Capital of Isvael |
| Royal Palace | Ilyrath, above the city |
| Heart | The Tree of Lovers |
| Known For | Markets • crafts • waterfront • Bloomtide |
| Waters | Frozen in deep winter • navigable in milder seasons |
If Ilyrath is where Isvael rules, Saelith is where Isvael lives.
The capital stretches below the palace toward cold water, its streets shaped by centuries of rebuilding, trade and ordinary life.
Workshops open onto narrow streets. Families live above shops. Fisherfolk work the frozen water in winter and return to boats when the ice releases them. Taverns fill. Merchants argue. Neighbors know entirely too much about one another.
And snow, despite what romantic paintings suggest, does not remain pristine forever.
It turns grey beneath boots.
Spring brings mud.
People complain.
Life continues.
At the heart of Saelith stands something far older than its markets.
♡ THE TREE OF LOVERS
A Love That Outlived Them
Its wood is white.
Its leaves shimmer green touched with gold.
Its flowers bloom red.
And within its trunk, two faces seem to sleep beneath the bark.
Long ago, an Iselari woman and a Dragon King loved one another.
Their love was forbidden.
The old versions disagree over details, as old stories often do, but none grant them a gentle ending. Both died, and from the place bound to their tragedy grew the tree that now stands at the heart of Saelith.
The people named it The Tree of Lovers.
Some say the pair were twinflames—two souls that recognized one another beyond reason, circumstance and the boundaries that should have kept them apart.
Whether twinflames truly exist is another question.
Fae stories are rarely considerate enough to provide proof.
Some say they were twinflames.
Others say that is merely what people call a love too terrible to have been ordinary.
One superstition, however, survives remarkably well:
Do not take from the tree.
A fallen leaf may be admired.
A blossom upon the ground may be left where it lies.
But plucking a leaf or flower directly from the Tree of Lovers is said to bring misfortune in love.
Saelith contains enough romantics—and enough cowards—that few are eager to test the story.
☀ THE DAY MARKET
Beneath the Tree
By day, the heart of Saelith belongs to trade.
Stalls gather around the Tree of Lovers with bread, preserved foods, vegetables, herbs, fabrics, tools, household goods, jewelry, carved objects and the work of local craftspeople.
The Day Market is practical because Saelith is practical.
People come because cupboards need filling, tools break, children outgrow clothes and someone always needs cheese.
That does not prevent half the city from also coming to hear the latest gossip.
☾ THE NIGHT MARKET
When Saelith Changes Its Face
After dark, the same part of the city changes.
Lights appear between stalls. Warm food replaces sacks of produce. Music carries between voices. Drinks are poured. Artists, craftspeople and sellers bring goods that belong more naturally to an evening crowd.
The Night Market is livelier, warmer and somewhat stranger than its daytime counterpart.
It is not a hidden criminal underworld.
Sometimes Fae simply enjoy staying out late.
🍺 THE CROOKED ANTLER
A Tavern of Saelith
| Name | The Crooked Antler |
| Location | Saelith |
| Type | Tavern |
| Keepers | Eirven & Bramble |
| Eirven | Elder Iselari |
| Bramble | Brownie |
Some places become landmarks without anyone formally declaring them so.
The Crooked Antler is one of them.
Warm, old and comfortably imperfect, the tavern belongs to Eirven, an elder Iselari, and Bramble, a Brownie.
Locals come for food and drink.
Travelers come because someone told them to.
Regulars come because they always have.
And eventually every tavern develops stories about which chair belongs to whom, which customer still owes money and which event definitely did not happen the way everyone insists it did.
The Crooked Antler has had plenty of time to collect all three.
🌿 THALORA
Spring Beneath Glass
| Location | Beyond Saelith |
| Community | Primarily Sylvari |
| Climate | Warm cultivated microclimate |
| Known For | Agriculture • plants • seasonal produce |
Beyond Saelith lies Thalora, a warm enclave protected beneath its great dome.
Outside, snow may cover the earth.
Inside, leaves unfold.
Thalora is closely associated with the Sylvari and supports crops and plant life that would struggle beneath Isvael's long winter. Its controlled climate makes it an important source of fresh produce, herbs and other cultivated plants.
But Thalora is not merely farmland.
It is a community.
People live there, work there, raise families there and possess lives extending far beyond whatever eventually arrives in a Saelith market basket.
And despite their shared warmth and abundance, Thalora and the Palace Garden are entirely separate places.
One belongs to a community.
The other lies beneath a King's palace.
🌸 BLOOMTIDE
When Winter Yields
| Festival | Bloomtide |
| Season | The turning toward spring |
| First Sign | Snowdrops |
| Sky | First full moon |
| Heart of Celebration | Saelith • The Tree of Lovers |
| Meaning | Renewal • love • community • returning life |
Bloomtide begins when winter finally loosens its grip.
The first snowdrops emerge.
The first full moon of the turning season rises.
And Saelith celebrates.
The festival gathers around the Tree of Lovers, where red blossoms hang above music, food, conversation and the lights of the market. Winter stores give way to precious fresh ingredients. Flowers return to tables. People dress for celebration rather than survival.
After months of white and grey, color becomes its own kind of luxury.
Bloomtide belongs to spring.
But it also belongs to love.
Perhaps that is inevitable when an entire city chooses to celebrate beneath a tree grown from a tragedy.
✦ THE BLOOMTIDE INVITATIONS
Follow the Snowdrops
When the first snowdrops break through Isvael's remaining snow, another ancient Bloomtide tradition begins:
the sending of the scrolls.
Only a small number find their way into the mortal world.
They arrive as old-fashioned parchment scrolls, bound and sealed with wax—an invitation from somewhere most humans have long since decided belongs only to folklore.
Receiving one demands nothing.
Some dismiss it as a joke. Some are frightened by it. Some open the parchment, read what waits inside and decide that whatever lies at the end of its invitation is better left undiscovered.
And some break the seal.
For those willing to follow, the parchment bears an old Bloomtide verse:
When snowdrops wake beneath the snow,
and winter loosens what it knows,
the moon shall round, the old paths gleam,
and doors shall open, seam from seam.So mortal heart, if brave ye be,
come walk beneath our moon with we.
Break now the seal that guards this scroll,
then breathe three times where wax was whole.Where snowdrops rise, your road is spun.
Follow each bloom, from one to one.
Stray not aside, nor turn away—
the flowers know the hidden way.Come dance where silver waters lie,
where Fae-song carries through the sky.
Come trade, come laugh, come watch till morn;
for one full moon, no guest is scorned. But mortal guest, remember well:
our table binds, our goblets spell.
Take neither berry, bread, nor wine,
if homeward paths ye still would find. And when the sinking moon grows pale,
go where the last white blossoms trail.
For paths that open may not stay—and those who feast belong to Fae.
A mortal who chooses to accept breathes three times over the broken wax seal.
Then the snowdrops begin to appear.
They do not necessarily form a neat, unbroken trail. One may grow where no snowdrop should grow at all; another waits farther ahead when the traveler needs direction. Somehow, the invited mortal knows which flowers belong to the path.
They lead toward the threshold meant for them.
And so the same little white flower carries a different promise on either side of the worlds:
In Isvael, snowdrops mean: the humans are coming.
In the mortal world, they mean: follow.
🍞 AT THE ISVAELIAN TABLE
Winter Teaches a Realm to Keep What It Grows
Isvaelian food carries the shape of its climate.
Long winters favor things that keep: smoked and salted foods, pickled vegetables, fermentation, sturdy breads, root vegetables, cheeses and preserved ingredients stored against months of cold.
| From Isvael's Table | Common Examples |
|---|---|
| Bread & Grain | Dense breads • rustic loaves • grain dishes |
| Vegetables | Roots • hardy winter produce • pickled vegetables |
| Forest Foods | Mushrooms • herbs • seasonal gathered plants |
| Dairy | Cheese • warm milk • cultured drinks |
| Water | Fish • smoked fish • salted fish |
| Preserves | Pickles • ferments • smoked and salted foods |
| Drinks | Herbal infusions • warm milk • mead |
| Fresh Produce | Seasonal crops from Thalora and the Palace Garden |
Fresh spring produce is therefore more than a culinary change.
After a long winter of stores and preservation, the first new greens, herbs and vegetables taste like the season itself has returned.
Food moves through Isvael along ordinary routes: farms, gardens, fishing communities, traders, markets, kitchens and taverns.
Magic may exist everywhere in the Otherworld.
Dinner still has to reach the table.
✦ LIFE IN ISVAEL
A Realm Is More Than Its Crown
Isvael is ruled from Ilyrath.
It does not live there alone.
It lives in nets drawn from cold water and bread cooling behind bakery windows. In a Thaerthi craftsperson resting their fingertips against old marble. In a Sylvari tending plants beneath warm glass. In tavern tables scarred by generations of elbows and arguments.
It lives in the first snowdrop after winter.
In red blossoms above a crowded market.
In old Fae stories nobody can quite prove.
In humans whose ancestors once crossed a threshold and never crossed back.
Kings become windows in Ilyrath.
Names fade.
Stories change in the telling.
And still, beneath the snow, Isvael keeps living.
Winter is only one of Isvael's stories.
The people who live beneath it are the rest.
