Shōbu comes from a long line of warriors. Her father is an officer in the JSDF, her grandfather faithfully served the Imperial Army, and her great-grandfather died still able to call himself a samurai. Even the women of her family could proudly call themselves onna-musha, and this remains true for Shōbu. Even though the Shinken are no longer part of a true warrior caste, she still carries herself as if they were lords of the land, and brazenly chooses to carry her family sword to symbolize this. Of course, she doesn't just have a warrior's spirit, but also the martial prowess to back up her pride. Though born blind, her natural gift for combat was apparent at an early age. In a way, her lack of sight was a great boon, as it has freed her from the myriad deceptions of the world that would make her heart waver. Unable to be intimidated by an opponent's form. Unrestrained by having to bear witness to the results of violence. Such freedom makes the choice to fight easy, and at a tender age, it made all too easy for Shōbu to kill.

It was in self-defense, but it was still such a messy affair for a little girl to be caught up in. That's what Shōbu's parents were thinking when they came to the decision to send their daughter to live with her grandfather. I was under his guidance that her talents truly bloomed; she was sharpened into a blade without peer. Others, like the Onguuchi, may pride themselves as artists, but he made her into a slayer of men. This truth, and her pride, prevent her from taking part in any competitions or clubs where her abilities might be put to use, for they are mere sport. She is too sharp for such frivolous activities and would only cut others while dulling herself.

The other part of what she learned from her grandfather was his somewhat extreme, though not necessarily unpopular, beliefs. She is of the opinion that her homeland has suffered humiliation after humiliation from the West, that the Emperor betrayed his people by renouncing his divinity, and that salvation is to be found in a return to tradition rather than the so-called progress that defiles Kageoka. The nationalist ideals are nothing odd; what makes her strange is the immense aggression behind them. She seems more likely to follow in Mishima's footsteps than to take a stand behind the podium. It can be said that the Shinken clan as a whole is rather strange, however, for how fiercely they cling to the past. One need only take note of the presence of subjects rather than mere servants living on their vast estate and tending to it.

Home
Before her departure, Shōbu enjoyed a particularly close bond with Madoka Onguuchi and Momofuku Chikata. It was through them that she came to understand some of the world's beauty as they whisked her to parts of Kageoka that she didn't know existed. They expanded her world and made her truly fall in love with her home. Now both it and they have become strangers to her—perhaps her to them as well. It is why all that has changed in her absence riles her so, and why she desires to return their past so desperately. Then, they too can return to how they once were.
