Little Sick Girl
Written by Eli Khaos
Once Upon A Time, there was a little child who yearned to see the world. But she was born with a sickly disease that refrain her from going out. The children wanted to play with her, Mother would always say no.
"You could get hurt!" Mother would say, "You are sick, so you have to stay!"
"But I want to go outside and play with the other children," the little sickly girl said.
Looking out the window, she yearns for the sweet release of freedom. To be able to go outside and run, play, and explore. To be able to get dirty, scraped, and feel what it is like to truly live a childhood without being sick.
She wants to feel okay, but she is sick. She's very sick she cannot even stand for too long without a chair.
Even then, she found it okay to be stuck indoors all day, even if she couldn't play with the other children. At least the most she could do was play with her dolls in her own, coddled up in her room. Mother would always take good care of her, even if she was very busy. Mother is very caring, she is a good mother who cares for her sickly child. So the little girl has long learned to be okay with being inside, alone, with Mother and her.
As the day would set and the night arises, the sleepy little girl is put to bed after a lullaby. Mother would leave a little candlelight on for a while until she was sound asleep.
The little girl would stare out the window next to her bed, the starry night sky clear and very pretty. The rabbit on the moon would smile at her. The little girl would smile back. But then, a shooting star would appear on the night sky. She as heard that if one wishes upon a star, the dream will come true. And so, the little girl with her two small frail hands clasped together with all her mighty strength, she wished upon the shooting star.
And with her little voice, she said:
"Twinkle twinkle little star, shooting down from the big dark sky; please please please make my wish come true! I wish to grow big and healthy so I can play with the other kids outside! I want to grow big and strong so I can help mama out! I wish with all my heart, so will you make my wish come true?"
And so, she fell asleep.
It was a bright day, birds were singing, flowers were blooming. The little sickly girl would wake up and feel so light and well. She would blink, wondering why she felt so nice. She would stand up, noticing how she moved oh so effortlessly!
She ran out her home, running out into the fields, all the way down to the valleys of flowers. She felt so free, so light, so haste it was truly wonderful.
She smelled the flowers, felt the grass under her bare feet, hugged the trees, and pet the critters near her. She would run, dance, scream, roll, and enjoy all that she has never been able to do before!
Her dream came true!
After hours of play, of exploring, and even playing with the children she finally encountered, she slowly made her way back home.
She search for her mother, realizing that she was up in the little girl's room.
"Mama I'm home! Look! My wish came true!" She popped in, beaming at her mother.
Right by her bedside, her mother was at her knees, weeping quietly.
"Mama..?" She would say, getting closer to look. In the bed, laid a little frail girl, pale and stiff as white. Eyes closed, seeming at peace without a breath or life in her little body.
Oh... it's her. That was her, the little girl in the bed was herself.
Her wish didn't fully come true, she was simply freed.
At the cost of her wish was her life. But at least, she could finally be at peace.
