Command Structure
As per the 1116 Naval Law, the Command Structure of the Fleet was overhauled and updated to face its modern threats and goals. At the top sits the Prins-Admiraal, the effective commander-in-chief of the navy, who answers directly to the Grand Prince. The Grand Prince has taken the route of simply leaving all major decisions to him since then and has established the precedent of command without the interference of the goverment, which was a major problem for the late Republican Navy. At his headquarters in Niewpoort, the Prins-Admiraal in theory has the power to control every aspect of every operation, but instead of micromanaging, Prins Hendricus has established a more flexible doctrine where his role is to ensure the grand strategic objectives are set forth and it is up to lesser officers to carry them out. Most of the work carried out by the Prins-Admiraal is based upon long term goals and objectives; dealing in areas that he personally is excellent in such as organization and politics. In the event of a large war, it is expected that the Prins-Admiraal will take an active part in leading the overall planning of strategic operations. In effect, he is the Chef van de Marinestaf (Chief of the Naval Staff) and Marinebureau (Naval Office).
Directly below the Prins-Admiraal are different offices
- Prinselijke Logistiek Bureau (Princely Logistics Office). Led by the Kwartiermeester-Admiraal van de Marine (Quartermaster-Admiral of the Navy), in charge of seeing that the fleet is properly supplied, that sufficient supplies are always available. Mostly an administrative job with accounting and paperwork.
- Prinselijke Inspecteurs Bureau (Princely Inspectors Office). Led by the Inspecteur-Admiraal van de Marine (Inspector-Admiral of the Navy). Oversees disciplinary matters and the investigation into corruption, incompetence and check whether and to what extent the organic and regulatory regulations issued for the fleet and the various naval districts and establishments have been successfully implemented. Sets standards for the Princely Naval Academy as well.
- Prinselijke Admiraliteit (Princely Admiralty). Headed by the Prins-Admiraal in most situations but differed to the senior admiral when absent. From where the operational tasks of the navy are directed and carried out.
- Prinselijk Marine Ingenieurswetenschappen Bureau (Princely Naval Engineering Office) Hoofdingenieur-Admiraal van de Marine (Chief Engineer-Admiral of the Navy). In charge of shipbuilding, contracts, and Naval Infrastructure.
- Prinselijk Marine Inlichtingen Bureau (Princely Naval Intelligence Office). Commanded by the Opperhoofd Inlichtingenofficier (Chief Intelligence Officer). In charge of all naval intelligence. Works with Prinselijke Operaties Commando (Princely Operations Command) as a whole.
- Prinselijk Korps Mariniers (Princely Marine Corps). Led by a Luitenant-Admiraal. The Elite Naval Infantry used for amphibious operations. More details later.
Each of these offices have subdivision and further subdivisions that are not worth going into. The exemption in the Princely Admiralty, as under it are the different Fleet and Naval Districts.
There is one central main fleet known as Grotevloot. It is station at Nieuwpoort and has most of the Capital Ships under its direct command. Its commander is Luitenant-Admiraal Albertus van Witte.
Aside from the main fleet are five Marinedistrict (Naval District(s)), being located at Nieuwpolis, Aquileia, Concordia, Zandvoorde, and Hearrenfean. These Naval Districts are commanded by a Viceadmiraal. Typically, the first three listed will have stronger contingents given their strategic importance, and some ships-of-the-line; while the latter could have only small frigate, some sloops and brigs.
As far as the structure itself is concern, the fleet is divided into Eskaders (squadrons) and Flottieljes (flotillas), with Divisies (divisions) in Ship-of-the-Line squadrons.
- A Lijnschip Eskader has six ships in two divisions. As of now, this means that there is a total of three Lijnschip Eskaders (Line Ship Squadrons) in theory. The reality is that there are actually only two full squadrons in practice, while the remaining six are spread between the Nieuwpolis, Aquileia and Concordia.
- A typical Fregat Eskader would have four ships in it, with no divisions. As of now, this means there is a total of six Fregat Eskaders (Frigate Squadrons) in theory. In practice, there are actually seven as Zandvoorde and Hearrenfean have three frigates as part of their districts organized into small squadrons and an extra frigate has been attached to the important Concordia District.
- A Licht Flottielje contains between 4 to 8 sloops or brigs in it. There are currently eight Licht Flottieljes (light flotillas).
