MailCliveden, once known as the Chew House, was built in the 1760's. It also once was a site of the American Revolutionary War's Battle of Germantown in 1777. It has and always been located in the Mount Airy neighborhood. It was preserved as a place that identified freedom and identity of the enslaved African Americans that once worked there. This house provided as a home for the Chew family for generations. During these generations, the enslaved African American's families grew, and their children were enslaved as well; Richard Allen was one of those people. It remained owned by the Chew family until 1972.
