"Pokemon Hurricane" (Written by Seeth)

This will be a record of what I have managed to discover, although I still have doubts, I can attach evidence of what I was able to observe. For a while I've used my free time to play with video game data, what do I mean by that? It's a little long, but I'll explain. Using external tools, you can use something called save states, these store data from a specific game, and with a few extra steps, you can load that same data to a different one. What results would this give? Well, from experience, in many cases this is not compatible in any way, and the game will freeze, with an annoying sound in the background. But there was one occasion when I was able to observe something, which made me go deeper into this world. With a series of very specific steps, you can observe things that normally should not appear in the game. Thanks to this, I was able to observe Yoshi in Super Mario Advance 4, he never appears in said game, but thanks to a save state from A Link to the Past, both games collapse, the frozen screen occurs, but you can see Yoshi in a corner.

I spent much of my free time experimenting in many ways, always using a connector to the computer to take screenshots in case I found something. I used my Game Boy Advance for these tests, but in all cases I used duplicate cartridges purchased from the Internet, because it had happened to me that after loading so much data it ends up completely corrupting the cartridge, making it useless forever. I have original games, but I only have them to play, I wouldn't risk losing any. One morning while I was looking at what game I would experiment with, among my original cartridges I caught a glimpse of Pokémon Emerald. I had never tested Pokémon, so I immediately ordered two clone cartridges online. While I was waiting for its arrival, using the emulator I was pulling save states from other similar games, Fire Red, Ruby, Sapphire and Pinball. I already had other games prepared from the tests I did previously.

To get more varied statuses, for Ruby, Sapphire and Fire Red, use codes and other tools to advance more quickly, since having many statuses at the beginning would not be worth it. I modified every section that I could in each one, the levels of my Pokémon, my medals, even if I had not fought with the leaders, the hours of play. Everything was to be used later. A few days later, the two cartridges had finally arrived , these did not have that greenish color of the original, they were a simple gray. The time had come to do the tests, I inserted one of the many games I had created into the cartridge and started. I was hoping to find something. The first state I loaded into the game was one from Super Mario Kart.

The result was... As expected.

Just pure squares placed randomly, and music with the wrong notes. Next test, with a Pokémon Pinball state. I already saw it coming, but what did surprise me is that at least on this occasion, the game was playable until entering combat. From there it started to restart. Maybe these two games share more data than I thought.

Alt Tag

Now. It would happen with the strong states, use Fire Red, Sapphire and Ruby. When using Fire Red, something curious happened, in addition to the protagonist's graphic changing to Red's, the wild Pokémon's music changed to Kanto's, but with changed instruments.

Alt Tag

I found it extremely interesting, these games being so similar can work with each other. When I tried to walk a little, I saw how once again, the game stayed still, with an annoying sound in the background.

Alt Tag

It seems that that was the extent of the compatibility with Fire Red, although it was a curious experience. Now, it was Ruby and Sapphire's turn, I had more hopes for this one, since they were almost identical to Emerald.

Alt Tag

Before restarting the console to load the states, I saved in Scarce Town to change location. When inserting the state. I didn't see much change, except that my character's graphic had one or another error.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

Out of mere curiosity, I decided to walk around the town to see if there were any other changes. Thank goodness I did, because I wouldn't have noticed that. There was one more NPC than I remember being in this town. When I talked to him, he unexpectedly told me things in English. Fortunately I knew a little, so I was able to translate it: “Ever since I learned about the hot breezes, I came here to save myself. I hope so."

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

My expression was confused, during the entire day of testing the game never changed language, this character spoke to me in English and only mentioned a hot breeze to me. I didn't understand what he meant.

I wanted to leave town to see if I could find cases like this, but the same thing happened. The game was left on a screen full of bad graphics. This time, I didn't change the game.

Alt Tag

After seeing that character mention something like that, I was more immersive. I would try to do something. Go directly to a different route or city, and load the status there. To my good luck, it worked. But partially. Every time I went to a new city, if I got close to the outskirts, it would freeze. I had to be cautious. What I found on this journey was extremely confusing.

Alt Tag

People who were on the routes spoke to me with concern about that breeze. Others didn't even respond to me.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

When I encountered a wild Pokémon, before the menu came up to choose the options, a message appeared in English. “The wind is a bit strong.”

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

Even though it had no effect in combat, it always had to come out. When I arrived at Rustboro City, one of the many people who appeared when loading data from Rubí gave me a useful message. “The rain has increased a lot lately. What do you think is happening?”

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

Rain. Water. Kyogre. I had overlooked it. Sapphire should have something too. I thought about maybe loading some Ruby and Sapphire state at the same time. I wasn't convinced at first, since I hadn't tried it before, but I didn't lose anything. My slight optimism was rewarded when I saw that the game did not freeze at all, but also now loaded the other areas correctly.

Alt Tag

But what caught my attention the most was that now you could see raindrops and some red pixels falling. It was when I remembered that this batch of Emerald that I was using for these tests had been left just at the moment when Groudon and Kyogre were freed.

Alt Tag

I had left it there because I felt that it was already a lot of progress. That explained the weather, but not the characters speaking English over a breeze. It was time to continue with the story to see if I could find an answer. Since I was in Rustboro City at the time, I wanted to use Fly to get to the city closest to where the story continues, but when I tried to use it, a message appeared saying “Rain and ash can seriously affect Swellow.”

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

There was no way to use Fly to shorten the path. I had to go on foot. As I walked, I noticed a lot more things, aside from the fact that the edges of the map looked buggy, there were even more people talking in fear.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

I knew they were referring to Groudon and Kyogre, but the English text was what made me talk to everyone I came across, even trainers I had avoided when playing normally, although they didn't change their dialogue.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

As soon as I stepped onto Route 119, there was a drastic change. The rain and those red dots had increased in intensity.

Alt Tag

When a wild Absol appeared to me, the breeze effect had changed. Now he said: “The strong wind along with the ashes hurt Absol!”

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

After this message, both the Absol and my Swampert's health dropped continuously, a single attack and this wind finishing the job was enough to weaken it.

Alt Tag

Thanks to that, I realized that those red pixels were Upon arriving at Fortree City, in addition to hearing the rain, there was a slight but perceptible sound of some kind of air around, like a wind.

Alt Tag

Plus more people telling me about being scared. At this point I decided to just get to Arrecipolis, ignoring the people, I believed they wouldn't mention anything new. I managed to reach Lilycove City.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

The weather had gotten more violent, the rain was throwing up more thunder, and those little red pixels were now more likely. But what caught my attention the most was that sound effect. like a wind, it was now more noticeable. Before using surfing to get to my destination, I started to think.

Alt Tag

Will Rayquaza have something to do with everything? Why the winds and breezes that people mentioned I can only attribute to him. But I hadn't even activated the event where Wallace opens the entrance to the Sky Pillar yet. Rayquaza shouldn't appear now.

Alt Tag

I used surfing to go to Sootopolis. While I was going through the sea, several Tentacool crossed my path, but the combat did not begin due to the same message of the breeze with ash, instantly weakening the Tentacool. I finally managed to reach Sootopolis.

Alt Tag

There, the scene where Groudon and Kyogre are facing each other began.

Alt Tag

But this time something else happened. in the middle of the scene, a light came from above, and from there, Rayquaza descended. As soon as I saw that, I was very confused, I hadn't called him yet to come here. Once he was placed in the middle of the two, he roared. Everything was silent for a few seconds. I thought the game was stuck at that point, to be expected with everything I saw. But not this time. Groudon and Kyogre, instead of isolating themselves and disappearing, looked up, both also launching their roar, revealing themselves against Rayquaza.

Alt Tag

When the scene ended, I saw how the weather had gotten worse. The sound of the wind along with the rain almost made it impossible to hear the sound effects. The 3 Pokémon were there, looking at each other. I circled around them to get to land, or at least what was left of it.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

I saw how waterfalls of water were now falling from the top of the city. I noticed that Steven was there. Being the only recognizable character there, I spoke to him. He kept asking questions about who that green Pokémon was, since he had never heard of it. But he was convinced it had to do with Groudon and Kyogre. He remained silent for a few moments, and spoke.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

“Sootopolis is lost, but there is still one left. A regrettable way to fix it.” He told me to accompany him to Mossdeep City, and he went in the direction of the hole where diving is used. Before going there, I entered the Pokémon Center to restore my team's health. But upon entering, I noticed that no one was there. It seems that they escaped from Sootopolis as soon as they could. I couldn't heal my Pokémon. With nothing else to do, I headed towards Mossdeep.

Alt Tag

Alt Tag

When I used Dive, I was able to see how the rocks in the very depths gave off a flash of red and brown. I managed to reach Mossdeep City, I could notice how the tide was rising along the small coasts, I quickly looked for Steven wherever he was. I was finally able to observe it at the entrance to the space building. Next to him was one more person. Interact with Máximo. A text box appeared that said. “We don't even know if it will work. You're sure?"
“What other option do we have?”

Alt Tag

Máximo turned to me and said. “Oh, I think there's still one more thing. Look, it would take me a long time if I explained it to you now, but I need to order something from you. We have no other choice, we have to fight against the 3 and try to stop them by force.” When that dialogue ended, a call appeared, I had completely forgotten about the PokéNavigator they gave you. It was Blasco.

Alt Tag

"Hey, please, I need your help, a green Pokémon just passed through Lilycove City, heading towards the sea, it looks like it's in a giant tower." After that the call was cut off.

Alt Tag

At that moment Steven spoke again. “He just moved, maybe the other two also separated to other places, this gets worse. Look, I need you to find that green Pokémon, and try to capture it, it might be our only hope for the region to be saved.” After saying that, Steven left. I was aware of where Rayquaza was, so it wouldn't be difficult to find him. But first, I spoke to that person who was still at the entrance. “Steven gave me one last option in case
they fail, although I personally feel that it would be worse.” What did you mean by last option? He wouldn't let me into the building, it seemed like there was nothing else to do. I set out on my way to the Sky Pillar. Upon arrival, before entering the tower, I received another call. It was Wally again.

Alt Tag

“Please, wherever you are, We need help, a Giant Pokémon is raising big waves of water…” Before the message finished, the Surf sound effect was heard, and the text box closed automatically. What happened perplexed me. The first thing that crossed my mind was the most obvious, I wanted to deny it, but in the end, it seems that the worst happened to Wally. I entered the pillar to see what was next. When I reached the top, Rayquaza was there, waiting for me. Before challenging him, I checked to see if my entire team was at full health, and arranged them to see who would come out first. I approached Rayquaza and interacted with him, the transition appeared to start the fight.

Alt Tag

At first I was confident because I had several Ice attacks. But the confidence went away when he saw his level. 95. Before starting the fight, a message appeared. “Rayquaza's fury caused a hurricane across the field.” I hadn't even gotten through the first turn, and my Swampert took damage from that new effect.

Alt Tag

I knew it wouldn't be easy at all. I tried everything, the ice attacks, even though they did quadruple damage, barely lowered his life a little. I also couldn't raise my defense stats because each turn that additional effect dropped a considerable amount of HP. It was inevitable what was going to happen.

Alt Tag

I ended up defeated, but instead of passing out, I returned to the map. There was my character, standing in front of Rayquaza. It was like that for a while. Until I saw an animation I wasn't expecting.

Alt Tag

Rayquaza picked up my character with a small tornado and slammed him into the ground. A slamming sound was heard, and the screen went black. Nothing happened. It stayed like that for a while, until a text box appeared. “Everyone has failed, press the button.”

Alt Tag

A sound effect that I can describe as fire sounded, and then a huge explosion. I didn't understand what happened until the screen finally showed something, it seemed to be some mountains, or at least that's what I thought.

Alt Tag

I kept analyzing the image carefully. On the sides were small silver pieces, and traces of gray rocks. I was finally able to identify the place. It was the Celestial Pillar, but it had been hit with something. At that moment I remembered the words of the person in Algaria City. I understood what he meant when he said risky. They attacked the Celestial Pillar with rockets, hoping to finish off Rayquaza. And it seems they had achieved it. My thoughts changed when I saw that after a while, it started to rain, and deep in the background the roars of Rayquaza, Groudon, and Kyogre could be heard. After spending a while like that, the screen simply stayed the same, the loop of rain and roars. I restarted the console and there was only one change, now the erroneous graphics were more visible. But he still stayed in that giant hole.

What happened? My head keeps spinning more and more about everything I saw. Did Nintendo plan such an event within Emerald? Most of it was thanks to entering data from Rubí and Sapphire, but I still find it hard to believe. I left the cartridge stored next to my collection, it was useless, but there was something extremely unique about it. I saw the window of my room. It was already night, I had lost track of time. I still have many doubts about what happened, and if those events in the original game are true. The only way I can check it for myself would be to grab my original Esmeralda cartridge, and use the same states to check it. But, doing so has already ruined a test cartridge, and I don't want to risk ruining the original
since I had a hard time getting it. Don't know. Maybe I will remain with the doubt. Although I keep thinking about that static image of the huge hole. In a desperate measure, they attacked with the little they had, and it still didn't work, condemning the entire region to a catastrophe.
