THE ORIGIN OF ODD HARMONY

[KILLJOY] I once believed that being plural, a system, a person with dissociative identity disorder, was something peculiar and in need of hiding with the exception of those closest to me. I felt out of place, like I wasn’t normal, and that I was “odd.” This wasn’t just because of my DID, but even my autism and other unlisted disorders of mine. Every-day I felt like I didn’t belong in society—at times I thought I wasn’t human.

Throughout my struggle in coming to terms with my disorder, I felt a deep connection to music. My whole life I’ve felt a deep connection to music, but, since I was stuck in a hole of constant depressive episodes and suffering due to ongoing trauma—My entire mind, body and soul felt so intensely connected to music more than I ever have. Not only was I using it as a way to cope, but my parts (alters/headmates) were as well. They’d make their own playlists, have their own favorite artists and genres, all for one reason: an attempt to heal, to feel wanted and loved in paradises that their minds would create from these songs alone.

As a result, the collective agreed on our final system name: Odd Harmony--Harmonies for short.

After a long, gruesome battle against my mental health, things changed. Although I’m still struggling immensely, I’ve found peace in the people I’ve surrounded myself with. Rita, Kas, the entirety of Albana, even those I would chat to in random communities—Every single one of these people actively contribute to a large portion of my happiness today. Because of that, and as well as a few past occurrences, I’ve come to terms with my disorders. Sure, I won’t outright say I have this and that—and I’m still trying to find confidence to say I have DID without a care—but that doesn’t mean I haven’t accepted the fact that I am plural, apart of a system, a person with dissociative identity disorder. I’m a regular person just like everyone else—so why should I care if others find me peculiar?

You assume I’m faking having this disorder? Fine! You think the way some of my parts present themselves is unnatural or weird? Whatever! I’m an odd individual, and I’m proud of that. We all are.

Odd Harmony isn’t just a name—It’s our soul. Our very core. It’s what makes us, us.
