Swimming in the Rain

A Clover Guild Story

Amidst the storm sat a lone Vaporeon. His white ear-fins were perked up as he listened to the wind and rain. The dark surface of the sea stretched out before him, undulating beneath pale gray clouds until uniting with them at the horizon. Although this storm was far from the worst to hit the Capim region, it was enough to send most people indoors. d’Alin was not like most people.

He moved to the edge of the stout cliff, planting his mismatched paws firmly on the slick stone. He lifted his bleached foreleg and watched the rain soak his fine fur. It had taken half an hour to get here, and he became thoroughly drenched within the first minute after leaving the guildhall, but he would never complain about that. The sensation of water on his body made him feel at home. Still, as much as he loved the rain, he didn’t come here to simply stand in it.

d’Alin looked down. It was a sheer drop to the bay a dozen feet below, where foamy waves crashed against the rock wall and sent up a salt spray. He crouched low. He breathed deeply. He leaped up and joined the raindrops in the sky. Weightlessness overcame him for a moment before he plunged smoothly into the waves with nary a splash.

In that instant, the roar of the storm was muffled, reduced to a deep background rumble. d’Alin let his momentum carry him downward until the water resistance halted his descent. The large rock wall of the cliff loomed to his side, while the open water beckoned from the other direction. He twisted his body so he was belly-up and idly waved his tail, drifting upward until he was close to the surface. Here in the sea, d’Alin knew the same sensation of weightlessness and freedom he’d felt for an instant when he jumped, except it lasted forever. Swimming was not flight, but it was close, and it was a joy.

For a while, he simply floated in place and watched the gray ceiling roil intensely from the impact of thousands of droplets. He was so close to the wind and rain, but beneath the shield of the sea, everything was still. He was adrift in a sense of calm and comfort that he hadn’t felt in a while. He floated even higher, slowly raising a paw and letting it poke out above the waves. The wind chilled his soaked fur before he withdrew into the saltwater again.

d’Alin looked away from the surface and out toward the open water. He didn’t want to keep it waiting. With his webbed paws and his long, powerful tail, he launched himself forward. He gradually spun in a barrel roll, taking in the views all around him. Rock and sand formed the floor below, speckled with patches of swaying seagrass and stoic coral in a rainbow of colors and shapes. A variety of piscine Pokemon swam to and fro, occasionally waving a fin at d’Alin as he passed by. He smiled at his fellow fish, and he swept his tail through the water with greater vigor. He swerved up and down, sometimes peeking above the shuddering surface and into the rainfall, other times running his paws through the fields of marine grass below.

He could do this all day. But there was one thing in particular—a favorite activity of his—that he especially wanted to do while he was here. He sank to the bottom, full fathom five, and planted his paws in the sand. Just like when he was on the cliff, he crouched and gathered up his energy. His heart beat faster as he braced himself.

Then, explosively, he pounced upward. Bubbles streamed behind him as his entire body rippled in a wave-like rhythm. He tucked in his forelegs and let his back legs trail behind while his strong tail beat the water aggressively, propelling him like a rocket to the sea’s disrupted surface. Five, four, three, two, one—

Breach.

The din of the storm and the impact of the rain returned in an instant as d’Alin soared in a high arc, trailing seawater with him. The wind seemed to grant him wings and hold him aloft, and he felt as if time slowed down, giving him the chance to appreciate this moment in all its glory. He was suspended in midair, once again joining the raindrops in their domain. He gazed up at the endless storm clouds that had blessed him with this beloved downpour today. And as he fluidly arched his body and tail to continue tracing his parabola, his eyes aimed down at the sea. It was ready to embrace him again. The feeling was mutual.

Splash.

d’Alin returned to the familiar water with a broad smile on his face. He lifted his fluke above the surface and slapped it down before speeding away, eager to explore and frolic in the bay till the clouds cleared. He had experienced so many trials in recent memory, but the sea and storms never failed to bring him comfort, and nothing made him feel better than swimming in the rain.
