Chapter 1: From Rags
The adventure begins... or so it would, but our world is a blank canvas. I will take a highly conservative approach to worldbuilding, only creating what I need for the story to move forward. For now, let's start with a settlement.
Settlement size: Large town
Settlement theme: Pilgrimages
Settlement event: Holy day
District theme: Entertainment
Biome: Rainforest
Is the main population not human?
OPSE: No.
At the mouth of an alley sat a slumped, forlorn figure. Through groggy eyes, he observed the festivities taking place on the street. Children laughed and hurled colorful beads through the air. Local priests hawked religous trinkets of varying meaning and significance to pilgrims of all kinds. There were even a few drunks stumbling around under the midday sun. The half-orc pulled out his ratty coinpurse and peered inside. Two gold coins glinted back at him.
"Bullshit..." he grumbled as he rose to his feet and walked away.
The humid jungle air followed the half-orc as he brushed aside the weathered curtain and entered the tavern. It was busier than usual, and he knew it would be completely packed by nightfall.
Urukubarr needs a job. Let's see what's available.
First job: Ruin adversities
Is that some kind of escort job?
OPSE: Yes, and it's for a high-value client.
Does Urukubarr know of any nearby dungeons?
OPSE: No.
Second job: Delay art
No need to roll for that one, I've got an idea.
The half-orc spotted a finely-dressed man staring into his mug of rum with an expression of pure contempt. Intrigued, he sat down on the cushion next to him with an expression of feigned sympathy.
"What troubles you, sir?" he inquired.
The man growled without looking up, "Outbid again at the goddamn auction! My wife's favorite painting in all of Cama now sits on Muimo's wall, that bastard! What I wouldn't give to stomp his..." Still ranting, the noble finally looked up at the armored half-orc. He stuttered in surprise and a hint of aversion, but composed himself quickly. After regarding the half-orc for a moment, his eyes lit up wickedly. "Say, might you be willing to help me out? You'll be paid well, I promise."
The half-orc gave him a casual smile, oozing with unspoken confidence. "Urukubarr, at your service."
Tonight is the best day in the year for some sabotage as the guards will have their hands full with the festival. Time to get some details on the job. Does Muimo have any private security?
OPSE: Yes.
How much?
OPSE: About average.
Are they participating in the festival?
OPSE: Yes.
Excellent. Is there a wall around Muimo's property?
OPSE: Yes.
How obstructive is it overall?
OPSE: About average.
I'm imagining a small manor with an 8 foot high adobe wall encircling it. Has Urukubarr's employer ever been inside Muimo's home?
OPSE: No, but his friend has.
No security and we know the layout of the manor. This should be easy. How much is the reward?
OPSE: More than expected.
Let's put the reward at 500g. This dude bid way more on the painting itself, I'm sure. If all goes well, Urukubarr will be almost halfway to level 2 without a fight.
OPSE: An obstacle blocks your way.
OPSE: Altered scene. Random event.
OPSE: Command a faction CH
Urukubarr set out at dusk, making it to the perimeter of the manor. Not bringing his weapons or armor was necessary to avoid causing a scene since the head of the clergy just went on his ceremonial parade. He wasn't allowed to kill anyone, but a club and some armor would've been nice. At least he had his backpack full of tools. Wasting no time, he jumped and hoisted himself atop the perimeter wall.
It's an eight foot wall. No climbing roll is required. Getting to the second floor of the manor will be more challenging.
Is anyone present in the yard?
OPSE: No.
Is there anything Urukubarr can lasso his rope onto to climb into the bedroom?
OPSE: Yes.
Confident, Urukubarr hopped down, made his way to the northern wall, and retrieved his rope from his backpack. Tying a large loop at one end, he hurled it upwards, snagging it upon a balcony post. With it he scaled the damp wall with relative ease.
Is anyone inside the bedroom?
OPSE: No.
Is the painting there?
OPSE: Yes, and some treasure is present as well.
This is going ridiculously well. I'll savor it while it lasts. I considered stealing the painting instead of destroying it, but I don't think it's worth the trouble.
OSE Move Silently: Failure.
That's bad, but it only matters if someone is around to hear our thief. Is anyone present outside the bedroom?
OPSE: No.
Immediately, his target was within sight. Mustering all of his finesse, he crept into the bedroom... only for the floor to greet him with a low groan. Wincing, he quickly tore apart the painting, keeping some scraps as proof of his work. When he turned to hurry to the balcony, something caught his eye...
Is it jewellery or a gem?
OPSE: A gem.
OSE gem value: 50g.
With a wolfish grin, the merry thief quickly snatched a small figurine of a woman with a tiny gem embedded in its forehead. He stuffed it into his pocket along with the painting scraps and swiftly rappelled to the yard. Fueled by the thrill of the steal, he swiftly vaulted over the wall and made his escape.
Overall, Urukubarr only spent one turn on the property. In OSE, wandering monster checks are typically done every two turns, so there was no chance of a wandering NPC could've shown up. Asking if a room has creatures in it already is entirely different though. Also, the rope was left behind so I'll have to get another one.
Much merriment was had upon Urukubarr's return to the tavern. Sharing a drink, the thief regaled his employer with how the sabotage went, and promptly became 500 gold coins richer.
