The Sylvanrood Institute

Overview

The Sylvanrood Institute is a sovereign demi-human nation established in Central America, born from revolution and necessity. It was founded in direct opposition to the United Republic's systematic oppression of demi-humans — a state built to prove that demi-humans are not property, but people.

Where the Republic treats demi-humans as assets, Sylvanrood treats them as citizens. It is both a functioning nation and an ongoing declaration: that demi-humans have the right to exist, govern themselves, and determine their own future.

The Institute operates under a joint council of Omega and Alpha leaders, with Beta citizens forming the backbone of its civilian population. The tension between survival and idealism runs through everything — Sylvanrood is still young, still at war, and still proving itself.

Inhabitants

  • Sylvanrood is exclusively inhabited by demi-humans. All genotypes are welcome, from common canines and livestock to rare avian and aquatic breeds who have nowhere else in the world to belong.
  • Humans are not permitted within Sylvanrood territory without explicit authorization from the Omega and Alpha council. Unauthorized human presence is treated as a security threat.
  • Defected or escaped demi-humans from the United Republic are granted asylum upon arrival, though they undergo a vetting period before receiving full citizenship rights.
  • Former Pristine-line and Companion-class demi-humans — those most exploited by the Republic — are given priority care and rehabilitation upon entering Sylvanrood.

Structure & Layout

Sylvanrood is vast and deliberately designed to accommodate the full range of demi-human species and their biological needs. The nation is divided into three primary layers: Ground, Sky, and Ocean — each built for the demi-humans who inhabit them.

Ground Layer

The ground level is the heart of Sylvanrood — its farms, homes, hospitals, and the political core of the revolution.

  • Farms & Food Production Facilities — Sprawling agricultural zones focused on food independence. Sylvanrood refuses to rely on Republic imports; self-sufficiency is a political as much as a practical goal.
  • Housing & Shelters — Communal and private residences built to accommodate a wide range of body types, instincts, and pack sizes. Den-style housing is common for canine and ursine demi-humans; solitary units exist for more territorial species.
  • Hospitals & Public Aid Stations — Free medical care for all citizens. Given how many arriving demi-humans come from Republic labs or forced labor, medical infrastructure is a cornerstone of Sylvanrood's identity. Facilities are equipped to handle ABO-related medical needs, including heat and rut management, and C-section capability for male Omegas.
  • The Open Market — A lively central market for local produce, crafts, and imported goods. A dedicated section handles suppressants and Alpha/Omega biological products — items that are tightly controlled or weaponized in the Republic, but distributed freely here.

Key Locations

The Tangle

The everything market.

A sprawling, chaotic bazaar that functions as both shopping center and social hub. Local goods, secondhand items, trinkets, food stalls, rare imports — anything can be found in The Tangle if you know where to look. It is equally a place to buy necessities and a place to make deals, trade information, or disappear into a crowd. The Tangle runs day and night, and its energy is one of the few places in Sylvanrood where the weight of the revolution briefly lifts.

Verdenmoor

The capital. The heart of the revolution.

Verdenmoor is where Sylvanrood's leadership lives and where the future is debated and decided. It is grand by demi-human standards — wide roads, communal plazas, monuments to the fallen — but defined as much by tension as by pride. Citizens know they live at the center of a target. War is not a distant concept in Verdenmoor; it is a constant presence. Security patrols are visible, emergency protocols are second nature, and the atmosphere carries the particular weight of a city that knows it is being watched from the outside.

Despite this, there is genuine community here — celebrations of demi-human culture, public gatherings, and a stubborn, deliberate normalcy that the Institute's founders insisted upon. Living freely is itself an act of resistance.

The Spine

The leadership complex. Part monument, part fortress, part labyrinth.

From the outside, The Spine presents as an imposing skyscraper at the center of Verdenmoor — visible, symbolic, and intentionally intimidating. What the surface doesn't show is that the real operations of the Sylvanrood Institute happen underground. Beneath The Spine lies an extensive network of tunnels, reinforced chambers, and carefully engineered labyrinths that house the council's war rooms, communications infrastructure, and contingency systems.

The above-ground floors function as administrative offices and public-facing government spaces. Below ground is where Prometheus and the council plan, argue, grieve, and decide the direction of the revolution. Access is tightly controlled. Very few outside the leadership tier have ever seen the lower levels.

Sky Layer

Cirrus

The avian city.

Built into and across the upper floors and rooftops of Verdenmoor's tallest structures, Cirrus is a city within a city — home to avian demi-humans who struggle or refuse to live at ground level. Bridges, cable systems, open-air platforms, and tiered perches connect buildings across hundreds of meters of open air.

Cirrus is one of the most visually striking parts of Sylvanrood — a tangle of elevated walkways and nesting architecture against the sky. It operates with some autonomy from ground-level governance, with avian representatives on the broader council. Life in Cirrus is faster, louder, and more exposed than the ground, and its inhabitants prefer it that way.

Ocean Layer

The Shallows

The coastal settlement. Half on land, half in the sea.

Built along Sylvanrood's Pacific coastline, The Shallows is home to aquatic demi-humans — the rarest and most exploited of all genotypes under the Republic, where they were used for deep-sea labor and displayed as exotic curiosities. In Sylvanrood, they govern their own stretch of coast.

The Shallows is a half-submerged settlement: tidal buildings that shift between air and water access, docking structures, underwater habitation tunnels, and surface platforms for inter-species trade and communication. It is the most architecturally unusual part of Sylvanrood, and deliberately so — built by and for those who were never meant to have a home.

The Shallows also serves a strategic function: Sylvanrood's naval capability and much of its intelligence-gathering on Republic coastal movements runs through here.

Tone & Culture

Sylvanrood is not a utopia. It is a nation built under siege, by people who spent generations being told they were not people. The culture reflects this:

  • There is a deep, pervasive pride in demi-human identity — species heritage, ABO biology, and instinct are celebrated rather than suppressed or exploited.
  • There is also exhaustion, grief, and ongoing conflict. Not every demi-human agrees on how the revolution should be fought, or what Sylvanrood should become after it's won.
  • The relationship between Alphas and Omegas within Sylvanrood is politically charged — the old Republic hierarchy cast Omegas as the weakest and most valuable commodity. Sylvanrood's council structure deliberately inverts this, but old instincts and internalized hierarchies don't disappear overnight.
  • The threat of war with the Republic is not hypothetical. It is the backdrop of every meal, every meeting, every child born in Sylvanrood.
