ahem

There are many constituent parts to the practice of corpo alt vague doomposting, which compound into one of the most toxic and consistently self-sabotaging behaviors a vtuber can get into.

On a non-corpo general level, it needs reminding every once in a while, but the core underlying issue to a lot of this is that people watching vtubers are largely watching vtubers for some kind of entertainment, emotional fulfillment, escapism, or any other reason people consume whatever kind of content. They're actual people with their own issues, and often already have a plethora of reasons in their own lives to be anxious and feel like shit. This is often forgotten about both by the vtubers, and by the fans themselves who get heavily invested into vtubing, who inevitably fall into their own depressive stressed out menhera doom spirals when stuff starts going poorly. There's no other way for me to describe it, it's simply unprofessional for a vtuber to make a habit of projecting their ill feelings onto their audience.

This is not to say a vtuber isn't allowed to be openly sad, or not be on top of their game all the time, or talk about how their problems ever. It's just to say there's very obviously a line that gets crossed sometimes, where a vtuber constantly treats their fans like a therapist and emotional heatsink for their own baggage. Even if the fan response is outwardly overwhelmingly supportive, it's a stressful experience to put up with and it gets incredibly exhausting when done consistently over a prolonged period. Especially if the vtuber doing it isn't providing some kind of proportional relief to make up for it. More people than not are watching to forget their own problems, not shoulder someone else's, and it's incredibly hyper filtering on viewers that aren't diehard gachikoi in general.

That's all just on a personal base level though, the main topic is about the corpo PLfagging variant of this. This also involves another fundamental aspect that vtubers who go corpo become part of and represent a brand, which a majority seem to not really understand.

People love brands, collectives, in-groups, etc.. Humans are just innately tribalistic like that, our lizard brains are hard wired to dump dopamine when it recognizes you're a part of something, anything, and it dumps even more when that something is cool and doing well. This is something extremely beneficial to corpos, because fans who feel like they belong to some greater thing with whatever kind of righteous cause are incredibly more active. They're likely to go out shilling and attempting to proselytize others into becoming fans, in a way that indie vtuber fans generally aren't. Fans of individual girls within a corpo also engage with each other, they watch people they wouldn't normally be interested in watching, and they're much more likely to move laterally within the corpo if they stop watching someone for whatever reason, or are looking for a side oshi, or what have you. Like as an idol corp fan I started off as a fan of Yuko, then Yuko and Fuyo, then Fuyo and Coni, then Fuyo and Enya. There's a whole bunch of other benefits I could list, but shilling is the most important thing. Any corpo can dump tons of money on ads and astroturfing, but no form of advertising is as effective as positive word of mouth being obnoxiously spread by fans for free.

Then the vague doomposting comes along, and nearly irreparably ruins all of that.

The personal effects described earlier of fans getting stressed from vague dooming still apply, but as a collective brand it doesn't even have to be from a girl they're watching. Whichever girl you're watching can be acting completely fine, but if someone else is having a meltdown in the periphery, that takes over your attention as a fan of the corpo, and discourse associated with it. You'll wake up, be excited to post about how much you love your oshi, and then see the home thread is already on a new bake for some reason, and you'll get that instinctual skin crawl telling you that someone said something somewhere and now everything is on fire. Is there a problem behind the scenes? Is the thing I'm supporting actually bad? Does this affect my oshi and if it doesn't now, will it in the future? And so on. One girl doing it on her own can sometimes be excused as a personal skill issue menhera moment or something, and it sometimes absolutely is, but as western vtubing in particular has become more and more anti-corpo as a default, just one menhera can fuck shit up for everyone. Though if there's genuine shit going on and multiple girls start doing it at once or in succession, it becomes an unignorable clusterfuck.

This kind of stress watching it unfold inevitably turns into compounding toxicity within the fanbases. People who try to stay ride or die corpo fans, or just generally want to actually enjoy their entertainment, begin fighting with upset fans now identifying more as a fan of a single girl, and soon people are calling each other corpo cocksuckers or begin attacking the vtubers involved in order to discredit her or downplay whatever her issues might be. Gossip kicks into overdrive and people start trying to compare the words and disposition of one girl with another, to try and determine what the problem is, who has the problem, how severe the problem is, how likely they are to be lying or exaggerating about it, etc.. Although most suck ass at this and most of what's spun out is retarded and incorrect rrats, which the vtubers inevitably read and get annoyed by, but can rarely ever address and clarify on as they watch them begin to circulate and get more retarded through the game of telephone. Dramafags and trolls and shills for other corpos that may or may not usually always be Phase begin to circle around like sharks smelling blood in the water, making things worse in every way they can.

Casual and intermediate fans who catch bits of it often don't have any interest in putting up with this shit and are filtered en masse very quickly. Prospective fans are filtered when they see the doom spiral and think, yeah nah I'll just go watch X instead. As apathy sets in, dedicated fans begin to isolate themselves to single girls and put in less and less support for current and future talent that isn't their oshi. They stop shilling because no in their right mind will try to get people to watch something that may be about to collapse, or because they can't do so without a drama tourist showing up to be all, "oh I heard from the catalog that it's about to collapse." Some people instantly flip to being antis of the corpo and become what's often the most obnoxious and damaging form of dramafags, and I absolutely 100% know this from experience of watching fancords get filled with persistent deranged retardation about it, that word for word shows up in threads only to get labeled by others as tourist threadshitting. The more groomer-y of the lot will particularly begin graduation begging almost instantly.

Then the actual proper PLfagging comes along and makes things even messier.

Is she just building up an exit plan if the corpo dies, or is she going to graduate? When will either happen? Why hasn't she just done it now? Should I monetarily support one or both, and is she just trying to double dip? I don't have the attachment or fondness for her PL design that I do for the corpo design I initially became a fan of, or it's just plain ugly and I don't want to look at it. Is she actually just using it for casual streams? I don't want to encourage and support this behavior but I'm afraid I'll become a second class fan if I don't. I'm not a PLfag and going back to it makes me feel like an outsider intruding on something long established. She acts differently on her PL in a way that makes me feel put off. Are other fans going to go full turbo groomer when she leaves? She's spending more time working on establishing stuff for her PL instead of streaming anywhere. Why isn't she explaining anything, is she just using a hypothetical NDA as a shield? Did she join with the intention of leaving soon after? She's wasting an opportunity. She's being annoying. Why hasn't she been terminated yet?

Various such autistic and/or schizo brain worms like these begin to take over a good portion of dedicated fans, and sometimes they aren't just brain worms and a girl is not the same person between identities or what have you. Regardless, a portion of dedicated fans begin to get filtered or bitterly sperg out as the stress climbs higher, with a few morphing into schizo antis. It becomes a new source of toxicity as they begin to butt heads against other fans that don't have the same problems and act dismissive towards them, and once again the vtuber is often forced to read things they often can't really address and clarify on. The community starts to turn into a powder keg, and if a girl happens to yab and cause a spark to set it off, it'll turn out much worse for her. Around this point people usually start throwing around the "oshi the girl, not the model/corpo" line, which as a personal aside has always been a bullshit line that's only brought out when it's convenient for the vtuber, and it's often said by people who will anti a corpo more than they'll support the girls in it.

Most of this has just been about the fan side of things, but what have the vtubers gained from all of this? They've lost fans, they've gained antis, dramafags are spreading rrats about them, they've basically all but guaranteed they're never going to reach a period of general growth ever again, stuff like merch is going to sell way less because people use the corpo as excuse to not buy it so they get both less money and fewer opportunities for anything decent or cool in the future even if they ultimately wish to stay, I would have to assume management will start breathing down their backs more over all this, and in the worst cases the catty sister stuff will start coming out from other talents, who again also suffer because of the actions of someone else. All of these things make them feel way worse, which in turn often makes the dumber ones do it even more.

There are only 3 things I've ever seen come remotely close to justifying this entire process. The first, is how they need to get people aware of and ready to move to the PL if/when they do graduate or the corpo dies. There's enough basic observable evidence at this point I think to discredit this entirely. Dedicated fans will all always know about it, and without being able to say anything about it outright, you will literally never be able to make casual fans and most intermediate fans aware, they are just completely fucking oblivious. I think both vtubers and dedicated fans stuck in their own feedback loop lose sight of how little a large portion of the audience actually cares. In the process of trying make sure they carry as much of their corpo audience as possible with them, they only achieve losing more of it.

The second justification is the plainly retarded bit of, well, their corpo is/was unprofessional and retarded, so that somehow makes it okay for the girls to also be unprofessional and retarded. Which sure, the corpo suffers a fucking ton and I'm positive there are times in which the vague doompost PLfagging collusion bit is the only thing they can do, short of just graduating, to get their corpo to budge on anything. However, as I've described up to this point, they're far from the only person who suffers and it's effectively cutting off your own nose to spite your face.

The third justification is sadly maybe the most valid, where they're just trying to purposefully dramafag the situation for pity, validation, and most importantly attention. I know there's a lot of evil bullshit that goes on in corpo vtubing, but I also know there's a lot molehills being turned into mountains by people wanting asspats and belly rubs from fans they believe will always unconditionally Yes Man them. Being rewarded for feeling angsty is an amazing feeling, but nothing about it actually solves any existing problems, and in this case only causes more. Sometimes the more retarded and evil ones believe that by exaggerating, lying, or full on causing more problems, they'll get rewarded with more attention (people will describe this as trying to pull a Selen but I personally despise this term), though this also hasn't worked out for anyone hoping for a lasting bump. If anything it's turned more vtubers into pariahs that people don't want to associate with.

The worst part about all of this is that there's really almost no way to fix it or reverse course once it starts, even if the corpo ever genuinely tries to improve or fix whatever conditions caused it in the first place, and the girls start sucking corpo cock on every stream. People hold autistic grudges and won't trust it, fans have already left and begun spreading word that your corpo is a shitshow of some sort, all the girls have likely caught themselves in a menhera feedback loop, etc.. The only thing that can reverse this damage is probably a (non retarded) rebrand, with years of genuine effort, little to no drama, preferably few to no graduations, a healthy portion of luck, and no vague doompost PLfagging. Sadly the likelihood of any of that happening, let alone any corpo being willing to or capable of burning that much money for that long, is low.

To drive home the point, I'm sure everyone that has sat through this stuff has seen the phenomena of some people cosigning their faith or trust in a corpo towards a canary in the coal mine, a vtuber or vtubers that generally have the sense to avoid taking part in this and other typical vtuber dramas. The classic line of, "Until X and/or Y revive their PLs and start dooming too, I'm going assume this is a menhera nothingburger and it's not actually that bad." Whether it's by merit or not, people will identify someone not doing it and rally around them, even if the vtuber isn't their oshi, because they simply just wish for there to not be any problems with the form of entertainment they're a fan of, because it's either that or being unhappy.

Toxicity begets toxicity.

I considered adding some more illustrative examples as evidence to all of these affects, but it started to dive too much into the realm numberfaggotry and I figure it's probably better if I kept this as agnostic towards any drama as possible.

All of this being what vtubers shouldn't do though, but to be actually constructive what SHOULD they do?

they want to menhera vague doompost

They should try (try) to do it to anyone that isn't their audience, and failing that, they should try (try) to limit it, and failing that they should try (try) to figuratively suck their audience off to make up for it to keep their morale up. They should always try to respect their audience and remember they're actual people and not compliment bots.

they want to prep their PL for a graduation or corpo collapse

They should do so quietly without dragging it out public with months of will-she-or-won't-she stress and/or radio silence, assuming it's up to them and there isn't black corpo stealth termination type shit involved. They should also preemptively come to terms with the fact that a big portion of their corpo audience isn't going to follow them to their PL, no matter what they do.

they want to not deal with whatever shit is going on with their corpo behind the scenes

They should act like the professional entertainer they signed up to be and put up with it, or do so until they can actually graduate with as little drama as possible. If they're miserable at their corpo they should just graduate sooner rather than later, because an amicable and professional graduation serves everyone a million times better, and there's no point to being in a corpo to begin with if you are just making "I hate my corpo" your entire personality.

If it's a total corpo death explosion nothing matters at that point and they can sling as much shit as they want, but any situation short of that is only going to cause more problems for themselves and especially those still in the corpo. Yes, this applies post graduation too. If groomers and corpo antis and dramafags in your fanbase keep trying to bring the subject up and pry information from you, tell them to shut the fuck up and to move on. Seriously, fucking publicly execute them if you have to, I know from experience of watching a post-corpo vtuber that there's a subset of fans that bring it up at every opportunity they can and actively try to encourage a vtuber's worst instincts when talking about it, whether it be to get maybe some details on drama, validate their hate of the corpo that your friends still work at, or just want to hear something to the effect of, "I'm so glad we don't have to deal with manajerks and it's just you and me now, groomer-sama~"

Although even if the corpo is dead, I would still try to avoid making being a corpo trauma survivor your personality. Depending on how the corpo dies and how you acted within it, it's entirely possible you'll get blamed at least in part, rightfully or not, as people are always going to be bitter that the thing they once liked is dead now. It's a fast way to breed lifelong antis that will say you specifically killed Vtuber Live Corp. Plus it's just kind of obnoxious.

Also all of this is assuming there's not actual real criminal level shit going on with your corpo, but in that case you should still get the fuck out immediately instead of undermining your own credibility by floundering around vagueposting about it like it's highschool drama.
