VxKex Compatibility List

You can also find this document on the VxKex files, usually located at C:\Program Files\VxKex:

If you find an application works with VxKex that is not on this list, please open an issue and it will be added. If you find an application that does not work, you may also open an issue to request support.
In general, if an application offers installer and portable versions, the portable versions have a higher chance of working. Prefer portable applications (.zip/.7z) if possible.

Supported applications

If you are running Windows 7 SP1 with no updates, some programs on this list will not work. The KB2533623 (DllDirectories security update) and KB2670838 (Platform Update) updates are required for many of the programs on the list to function, most notably all the web browsers and Electron applications as well as many of the Qt6 applications.

  • Anki 23.12.1
The first time you open the application, a popup may appear complaining that it could not initialize the video driver. Simply start the application again and it will work. Subsequent launches will not have this problem.
  • Bespoke Synth 1.2.1.0
  • Blender 4.0.2
Installer does not work. Use the portable version.
  • Blockbench 4.9.4
  • Calibre 7.5.1
Only portable version was tested. Ebook viewing is now working.
  • Chromium (including Ungoogled) 124.0.6350.0
Aero is not properly working in the title bar. This is not a VxKex deficiency and cannot be fixed.
It is recommended that you consider a browser such as Supermium instead, which looks better with both Aero and Classic themes and uses less memory.
  • Errata: There is a known issue with some debug builds displaying a crash dialog on some websites. It is harmless and you can just minimize the dialog.
  • Citra (final)
    Based on user report.
  • Commander Wars (unknown version dated March 2022)
  • Cygwin 3.5.1
Installer requires version spoof to 8.1.
  • Dasel 2.6.0
  • Discord Canary 275999 (6b8396e)
  • ElectronMail 5.2.2
  • Firefox 123.0.1
Just like with Chromium, Aero is not working in the title bar. This is a Firefox issue and cannot be fixed by VxKex.
  • Errata: An error dialog may occur under some conditions after quitting the browser.
  • GIMP 2.99.18
Installer requires version spoof to Windows 10.
Main Gimp EXE requires VxKex enabled to avoid error messages and broken Python features.
You might see some Python-related error messages in the console. These are network related and do not represent a real issue.
  • GitHub Desktop 3.3.11
Enable VxKex for the installer before installing. No version spoof needed.
Enable VxKex for the app after installing as well (%LocalAppData%\GitHubDesktop\GitHubDesktop.exe).
  • HandBrake 1.7.3
Requires version spoof to Windows 10.
.NET desktop runtime 6.0.x is required. Will crash without. If it crashes at startup please ensure the .NET runtime is installed.

After opening HandBrake, go to ToolsPreferencesAdvanced and make sure the "Run each queued job in a separate worker process" checkbox is NOT CHECKED. This feature doesn't work but luckily it isn't very important.

  • Kodi 21.0 beta2
Installer requires version spoof to 8.1, works afterwards without VxKex.
  • MKVToolNix v82.0
  • MongoDB 7.0.5.0
  • MPC-Qt 23.12.0.0
  • MPV 18-Feb-2024 git build
  • MPV.NET 7.1.1.0
.NET desktop runtime 6.0.x is required.
  • Opera 108.0.5067.24
Installer requires version spoof to Windows 10.
Opera EXE requires VxKex enabled, but no version spoof is needed.
  • osu!(lazer) 2024.302.1.0
Requires version spoof to Windows 8.1.
After installation, go to %LocalAppData%\osulazer and enable VxKex for Update.exe with version spoof to Windows 8.1.
Errata: An error dialog may appear during installation. It is harmless and may be dismissed.
  • Python 3.12.2
Installer works with version spoof to Windows 8.1.

In order to run Python, you must enable VxKex for python.exe and pythonw.exe, which are located in the Python installation folder. The default installation folder is %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Python. No version spoof is required.

In order to be able to uninstall Python, you need to enable VxKex and version spoof to Windows 8.1 for the uninstaller. The uninstaller is located at "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Package Cache" inside one of the folders. It is usually the only EXE file present.

Due to the issues with the uninstaller, it is highly recommended that you only use the portable version of Python unless you have a strong reason to use the installer.

  • qBittorrent 4.6.3
  • QMMP 2.1.5
Only portable version was tested. The installer probably works too.

  • Rufus 4.4.2103
Requires version spoof to Windows 10.
  • SBCL (Steel Bank Common Lisp) 2.3.2
  • Signal 7.2.0
Installer requires version spoof to Windows 10.
After installation you may see an error message saying that DiscardVirtualMemory could not be found. Ignore it. Search for Signal in the start menu, right click on the icon, select Properties and enable VxKex for the Signal application in the properties dialog. No version spoof is necessary.
  • Spotify 1.2.32.997.g4c6498b6
Installer requires version spoof to Windows 10.
After installation, enable VxKex for Spotify.exe in %AppData%\Spotify. No version spoof is required.
  • StaxRip 2.36
The app itself opens without VxKex but the bundled applications which it uses (Python and MKVToolNix) require VxKex. Therefore it is recommended to enable VxKex for this program.
Ensure that the “Disable VxKex for child processes” option is not checked.
  • Steinberg SpectraLayers 10.0.0.327
    Installer works without VxKex.
Activation Manager Unlocker requires version spoof to Windows 10.
  • TeamTalk v5.15
Only the portable version was tested. The installer probably works too.
  • VSCode and VSCodium 1.87.2
  • Webcord 4.8.0
  • WinDbg Classic 10.0.22621
From Windows SDK for Windows 11 22H2. This version of WinDbg supports PDB files >4GB.
It is recommended to select the “Disable VxKex for child processes” option, otherwise the applications you are debugging may inadvertently have VxKex enabled as well.
  • WinDbg Preview 1.2202.7001.0
This is the version which is usually available through the Microsoft Store, but can be downloaded through alternate means as well. As with WinDbg Classic, ensure the “Disable VxKex for child processes” option is checked.
The “Time Travel Debugging” feature does not work due to a missing Windows Runtime interface.
  • Yuzu 29-Feb-2024 build, 8dd5cd4ea
Portable version only. Installer requires Edge WebView.
Game play not tested. Please let me know if it works or doesn't work.
  • Zig 0.11.0
  • Zoner Photo Studio 19.2309.2.506
GPU accelerated calculations are not available – CPU will be used instead.
Due to large number of child processes created, it is recommended that you select “Disable VxKex for child processes” in the settings.
