What is Sexual sadism disorder (SSD)? .
Sexual sadism disorder is a paraphilic disorder in which a person is sexually aroused by inflicting physical or emotional pain on another person, and their sexual urges or behavior causes distress or harm. People with the disorder may participate in activities that put other people at risk of physical harm. Someone with SSD has strong urges to engage in activities that bring about these situations. The urges rise to the level of a disorder when they cause significant psychological, emotional, or physical distress in the person experiencing them or are acted out with a non-consenting person. .
Diagnostic criteria from DSM-5
A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent and intense sexual arousal from the physical or psychological suffering of another person, as manifested by fantasies, urges, or behaviors. B. The individual has acted on these sexual urges with a nonconsenting person, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
.
SSD vs. normal sadism
Sexual sadism disorder should be distinguished from mild sadistic sexual activity, which is very common among consenting adults. When the behavior is acted on only with consenting partners and does not cause distress or actual harm, sadistic acts or urges do not meet the criteria for sexual sadism disorder.
SSD vs. Sadistic personality disorder (SaPD)
Sexual sadism is completely curable while SaPD is not. SaPD affects someone's whole personality most if not all the time, while SSD doesn't. SaPD not does have to be sexual. Although they both can cause extreme stress
