Sylvanrood Institute — ABO Caste System

Overview

Within the Sylvanrood Institute, the ABO biological system — once weaponized by the United Republic to classify and exploit demi-humans — has been restructured into a social framework built around each caste's natural strengths. It is imperfect, politically charged, and evolving. The revolution didn't erase biology; it tried to give it dignity. Whether it has succeeded depends on who you ask.

The three castes — Omega, Alpha, and Beta — each occupy distinct roles, live in distinct social structures, and carry distinct burdens. Their coexistence is the ongoing project of Sylvanrood.

Omegas

Biology & Role

• Omegas sit at the top of Sylvanrood's social hierarchy — a deliberate inversion of the United Republic's model, where Omegas were classified as fragile breeding stock and prized exotic pets.
• Omegas are highly fertile. Even male Omegas, who lack a vaginal canal and cannot give birth through natural means, are not excluded from reproduction: their vestigial uterine cells are harvested and used to develop artificial wombs, allowing male Omega parenthood to be fully realized in a medical setting.
• Omegas produce strong pheromone signatures and exhibit deeply territorial behavior, particularly toward their bonded Alphas and their children. This instinct, once exploited by the Republic, is respected as a marker of identity and belonging in Sylvanrood.
• While Omegas are encouraged to pursue physical training and combat readiness, their primary contribution to Sylvanrood tends toward logistics, war tactics, intelligence, and strategic planning — roles that leverage their instinctive social awareness and scent-based communication.

Social Structure

Omegas live in tight-knit communal groups, each organized around a Dominant Omega who sets the tone, rules, and internal culture of the group. The dominant Omega is not merely a social figurehead — they are the arbiter of internal disputes and the enforcer of group standards.

Across all Omega groups in Sylvanrood, the overarching authority is Kadin Pena, a Wolf Dominant Omega and one of the Institute's founding council members. Kadin does not manage the day-to-day of every group, but his word carries final authority. When a group cannot resolve a conflict internally, the matter is brought to him for verdict.

Within each group, governance is largely democratic — decisions are made collectively, with the Dominant Omega holding a casting vote. If an Omega steps out of line, it is the group's responsibility to address it first. Banishment, sanction, or formal complaint to Kadin are all options, depending on severity.

• Omega communities are closed to Alphas and Betas. This is not purely social preference — it is a biological and psychological necessity. Omega spaces are where pheromone communication flows freely, emotional processing happens openly, and the constant performance of strength required by the revolution can briefly be set down.
• Information exchange within Omega groups is both social and strategic. Omegas are the Institute's most effective internal intelligence network — not through formal espionage, but through the dense, pheromone-rich social webs they naturally maintain.
• The Sylvanrood Omega does not resemble the Republic's Omega. Softness, in the old sense — passivity, fragility, submission — is not tolerated. Every Omega trains. Every Omega is expected to contribute. Those who cannot compete physically are redirected toward study, research, medicine, or strategy. There is no useless Omega in Sylvanrood; only misassigned ones.

Alphas

Biology & Role

• Alphas are the physical class — larger, stronger, and biologically primed for combat and protection. They form the backbone of Sylvanrood's military.
• Alpha biology comes with significant costs: a deep territorial instinct, a persistent drive to mate, and hormonal cycles — particularly Ruts — that can cause partial or full loss of cognitive control. In the Republic, this was used to justify treating Alphas as blunt instruments. In Sylvanrood, it is treated as something to be understood, managed, and respected.
• Alphas are kept on a tight operational structure. Not because they are dangerous by nature, but because their biology demands outlet and oversight. Without it, conflict escalates rapidly.

Social Structure

Alphas, like Omegas, live in structured communal groups under a dominant leader. Their groups are less democratic than Omega groups — hierarchies are established through a combination of physical dominance and demonstrated restraint. An Alpha who cannot control themselves earns no authority over others.

The figure responsible for Alpha cohesion across the entire Institute is Martin Russo, a Bear Alpha and army commander. Martin's role is less administrative than Kadin's — it is fundamentally about force of presence. His authority is physical, earned, and constantly maintained. Alphas respond to strength, and Martin provides it.

• Sparring and structured physical contests are not optional in Alpha communities — they are institutionally encouraged. Controlled aggression is the pressure valve. An Alpha who fights in the ring doesn't need to fight in the street.
• Emotional management is a required ongoing practice, particularly for younger Alphas whose hormones are still unbalanced. Older Alphas are expected to mentor, monitor, and intervene when younger members show signs of losing control. This is both a social obligation and a point of personal pride — an Alpha who helps another Alpha stay steady is respected.
• Puberty is the most volatile period in an Alpha's life, and Sylvanrood treats it accordingly: young Alphas in this phase are housed in monitored environments with structured daily routines, regular sparring access, and mandatory emotional management sessions. Violence during this period is expected and accommodated. Violence after it is not.

Betas

Biology & Role

• Betas are the majority population of Sylvanrood, and the least represented in its power structures. They are the farmers, the shopkeepers, the builders, the traders, the everyday engine of the nation. Without Betas, Sylvanrood does not function. Despite this, they occupy no formal seat of governance.
• Betas do not experience the intense animalistic instincts that define Alpha and Omega biology. Their hormonal cycles are mild and largely suppressible. They are not driven by Ruts or Heats, do not produce social pheromones, and do not form instinct-based hierarchies. In the United Republic, this made them the preferred service class — manageable, predictable, docile. In Sylvanrood, it simply means they are governed by others.
• Betas live largely in harmony with one another, with no biological need for a dominant figure. Their communities are organized around practical needs — trade, craft, neighborhood — rather than pheromonal or hierarchical bonds.

The Beta Problem

Beta discontent is one of Sylvanrood's most pressing internal issues, and one the council has not yet resolved.

• No formal representation. Betas have no council seat, no commander, no institutional voice. They are governed by Omegas and Alphas who make decisions shaped by instincts and biological priorities that Betas do not share and cannot fully access. An increasing number of Betas are openly demanding a leader — a Beta representative with real authority. The council has acknowledged this. It has not acted on it. The tension is growing.

Inter-Caste Conflict

For all of Sylvanrood's ideals, the three castes do not coexist without friction. Much of it is biological in origin. None of it is simple.

The Pheromone Gap

The most pervasive source of low-level conflict between Betas and the other castes is the pheromone divide.

Alphas and Omegas communicate through pheromones constantly — signaling aggression, attraction, distress, dominance, comfort, and warning through scent in ways that are largely involuntary. The problem is that Betas cannot smell these signals. They are biologically excluded from a layer of communication that Alphas and Omegas experience as self-evident.

The result is that Betas regularly miss signals that Alphas and Omegas consider obvious — walking into spaces with active aggression markers, failing to register an Omega's territorial claim, not noticing an Alpha in early Rut onset. From the Alpha or Omega perspective, this reads as deliberate provocation or stunning social obliviousness. From the Beta perspective, nothing unusual was happening. Both are correct.

This creates chronic low-grade frustration on all sides. Some Betas, aware of this gap, choose to exploit it — feigning ignorance to sidestep social rules they technically cannot be held accountable for. This practice, when identified, generates significant resentment.

The Alpha Stigma

There is a widespread, deeply unfair stigma against Alphas within Sylvanrood's general population, framing them as violent, uncontrollable, and dangerous.

The reality is more nuanced. Alpha aggression is most acute during puberty, when hormones are severely unbalanced — a period that passes with time, support, and structure. Adult Alphas exhibit territorial and possessive behavior, but this is not fundamentally different from Omega behavior. The difference is that Alpha biology is more visible, more legible as threat, and carries the weight of the Republic's history of using Alphas as enforcers.

The consequence is a quiet but significant mental health crisis among adult Alphas: shame about their biology, guilt about instincts they did not choose, and social isolation as Omegas and Betas keep their distance. Martin Russo and the Alpha council are aware of this. Addressing it publicly is politically complicated — Sylvanrood's image of the fierce, disciplined Alpha soldier is part of its military identity, and humanizing Alpha struggle risks being read as weakness.

Fated Mates

Across all three castes, there exists the phenomenon of pheromone compatibility — the biological reality that some individuals' pheromone profiles align so precisely that contact produces an unmistakable recognition response.

Most compatible pairs experience mild preference and attraction. The highest tier of compatibility — what Sylvanrood culture calls Fated Mates or colloquially, soulmates — is rare enough to be considered exceptional. These pairs exhibit near-perfect pheromone synchronization, instinctive behavioral attunement, and in Alphas and Omegas, dramatically stabilized hormone cycles when bonded.

• Fated Mate status is confirmed through formal pheromone compatibility testing, available through Sylvanrood's medical system. It is not required, but widely pursued.
• Fated Mates are strongly encouraged to bond and, if desired, to formalize their partnership through marriage. The Institute treats these pairings as socially significant — a bonded Fated pair is generally more stable, more effective, and less likely to be destabilized by hormonal events.
• Betas can be part of compatible pairings, though their compatibility is measured differently — through biological markers other than pheromones, including hormonal response and documented behavioral attunement over time.
• Not all Fated Mates choose to act on their compatibility. The Institute encourages bonding, but does not mandate it. The revolution was fought for autonomy, and forcing biological destiny on unwilling individuals would undermine everything Sylvanrood stands for.
