jeeves and wooster

  • series of comedy short stories and novels written by british author p.g wodehouse from the 1920s onwards
  • set in the london high society of the twenties and thirties
  • follows the ridiculous adventures of the titular bertie wooster and his genius valet jeeves
  • very funny (though outdated in many aspects) and i've been having an absolute blast reading through them

my progress

the wodehouse novels ★★★★☆

📀 read as an audiobook 🕰️read a physical copy

  • my man jeeves
  • the inimitable jeeves📀
  • carry on jeeves 🕰️
  • very good jeeves
  • thank you jeeves
  • right ho jeeves 📀
  • the code of the woosters 🕰️📀
  • joy in the morning 📀
  • the mating season
  • ring for jeeves
  • jeeves and the feudal spirit 📀
  • jeeves in the offing
  • stiff upper lip jeeves
  • much obliged jeeves
  • aunts aren't gentlemen

i aim to own all of these in print but as that's not immediately possible i've moved to listen to them as full cast audiobooks until i can get my hands on more. i'm listening to the bbc radio plays and i love how they add all the sound effects and the jazz music in between sections it's so fun. 13/4/24.

the nineties tv series ★★★☆

starring hugh laurie as wooster and stephen fry as jeeves. the only adaptation which survives complete so naturally i've been gobbling it up

  • season one
  • season two
  • season three
  • season four

having now finished the entire series i can say that it was a real good time. while the books can never be outdone or replaced by an adaptation this show's got the spirit and great casting and scripts to go with it. i liked how they mixed up the plots from the original a bit so it remained fresh even when youve read the book. all this said i thought it was gross that they adapted the blackface and it shouldve been left on the cutting room floor where it belongs.

other adaptations

the world of wooster ★★☆

sixties tv series starring ian carmichael as wooster and dennis price as jeeves. due to sixties tv wiping practices only one episode survives in full :(. wodehouse was not a fan of this series as the casting was bad and most of the books humour relies on descriptions that aren't spoken out loud, an aspect that the screenwriter apparently didn't handle with the necessary finesse. will review once watched.

  • Jeeves and the Delayed Exit of Claude and Eustace

once i managed to look past the really awful addition of the monocle and laugh track i was having a good time. i loved dennis price as jeeves what a silly fellow. i'd watch the whole series if it survived but frankly only because its an adaptation, i couldn't honestly say it stands on its own merit. but maybe the laugh track just scared me off. 14/4/24.

the thirties films

in the thirties two films were made adapting the series and they weren't very good at all. david niven stars as wooster (love him but miscast of the century) in the first one and they couldnt even make him come back for the second so arthur treacher had to carry on alone as jeeves. will review once watched.

  • thank you, jeeves! (1936)
  • step lively, jeeves! (1937)
the silents

before there was wooster there was reggie pepper, the prototype for wooster who had his own jeeves, in this case a reformed criminal serving as his butler. two shorts were made starring lawrence grossmith as reggie pepper and charles coleman as jeeves. will review once watched.
- update 25/4/24, have not been able to find these anywhere, unsure if they survive or are available for public viewing?

  • making good with mother (1919)
  • cutting out venus (1919)
