oof, that's a pretty incendiary title, huh?

so, here's the thing. we're very tired and we think our custodianship of this server has run its course.

nihal took a sabbatical and realized fae felt a lot better away from here. i've been trying to launch other projects and feeling like my responsibility to this place is sucking up all the time i would like to spend on them instead. we brought our thoughts to the mod team and the feeling was pretty much unanimous - none of us are really feelin it any more. nothing bad has happened to make us feel this way! it's just been like, fuckin, six and a half years. we've given six and a half years of our life to this server. the vibes have completely changed in that time. as marron said while we were discussing it, "the server culture has shifted in a way where I don't really feel like I'm part of our primary demographic". that's fine, but it's a very bad position to run a server from.

so, let's not beat around the bush: we're going to sunset this server on August 1st. on this date, it will go into read-only mode. this might seem sudden to some of you! you might have questions! here are the major ones i anticipate:

why can't you hand it off to someone else?

we really really thought about it. put simply, we couldn't identify anyone we were completely sure could commit to leading the server on. this thing's a beast - it's big, it's old, it's got a lot of moving parts and culture and values that we'd have to induct someone into. i would have to trust someone 1000% to feel comfortable giving them the reigns, which is already a big ask. and then i would have to spend like, an extra three months apprenticing them, essentially. it's just not viable.

what do you mean by read-only mode?

the server will not be deleted - we will simply make it so you can't talk in any of the channels any more. this is in the interest of archival. there's, again, like six and a half years of history in here, and it would be devastating to lose that. however, we can't really make it all public either! i would encourage you to collect your thoughts and topics that have interested you in here and turn that into essays, art, whatever. transform the information so it can be made useful to people in future.

what will happen to the Alt+H project/website?

that will be sticking around. nihal and i intend to still publish stuff to it. we're still doing the advocacy thing. in fact, part of the aim in releasing us from the responsibility of this server is letting ourselves get back to that. we think we'll be more effective this way.

where are we gonna hang out now???

we put together a few places we think are decent here. that said, let's be honest - no server has quite the same focus as Alt+H does. i encourage you to make new servers to fill what you think you would miss about here. in fact, i am actively inviting you to use #your-projects to set something up or plug something you already got. there is community here that we don't want to rend apart. propagating new servers is a way to feel like you're moving this elsewhere, rather than having to move yourself to a new place that might not fit quite like this does.

so, yeah. that's where we're at. to reiterate, as of August 1st, the Alt+H discord server will be read-only. it's been good! really. i think this server has had a really important place in the history of these communities. it's simply time for us to move on. to be honest i'm actually kind of hopeful that bursting this bubble will end the monopoly many people percieve Alt+H to have over alterhuman community. this will be no more! run free, create new stuff, strive onwards to an even better global alterhuman community. that's what we're gonna be doing.
