@"

input-file=$env:UserProfile\.aria2\aria2.session
dir=$env:UserProfile\Downloads

file-allocation=falloc
max-connection-per-server=16

rpc-listen-port=12087
rpc-allow-origin-all=true
"@ | Out-File "$env:UserProfile\.aria2\aria2.conf" -Encoding utf8

@"
@echo off
aria2c
pause
"@ | Out-File "$env:AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\aria2.bat" -Encoding utf8

$ws = New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell
$sc = $ws.CreateShortcut("$env:AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\aria2.lnk")
$sc.TargetPath = "$env:AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\aria2.bat"
$sc.Save()
$b = [IO.File]::ReadAllBytes("$env:AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\aria2.lnk")
$b[0x15] = $b[0x15] -bor 0x20
[IO.File]::WriteAllBytes("$env:AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\aria2.lnk", $b)
}

3. Install aria2 browser extension

4. Extension settings

Go to the extension setting

  • Localhost:

    Port - 12087

  • Options:

    Notify when an URL is added - OFF
    Notify when a file is added - OFF
    Notify when an error occurs - OFF

port option

5. Download

-

  1. Open aria2 as it's a shortcut now
  2. On your browser, toggle Capture downloads ON by pressing the extension icon > setting icon
    2.1. Toggle Use complete file path when using "Save Link As..." ON to choose your own folder to save instead of default Downloads folder
  3. Download normally on browser, links are sent to aria2
  4. Toggle OFF after the links are sent to aria2 to avoid capturing everything
  5. Use Purge to clear finished downloads
toggle showcase

-

In summary whenever you want to download anything with aria2:

  1. Open aria2
  2. Toggle Capture downloads on browser to send the links over to aria2

6. Linux

-

This would vary from distro to distro, but it follows this flow:

  • Install aria2 with your favorite method
  • Create aria2.conf with the config above in mind and aria2.session files at its default config folder, with symlink if you want to back up easier
  • Make aria2 easily run, either with systemd, or a shortcut, your choice, get creative
  • Install extension on your browser, and it should be working
