Korea's modern pentathlon team wins first men's and women's relay championships at the World Championships
Men's Jeon Woong-tae and Seo Chang-wan and women's Kim Sun-woo and Seong Seung-min
are expected to win prizes in the individual exhibition at the Paris Olympics.
Korea won the men's and women's relay championships for the first time at the International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) World Championships.
Korea's Jeon Woong-tae (29, Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall) and Seo Chang-wan (27, Armed Forces Athletic Corps) scored a total of 1,466 points in fencing, swimming, horseback riding, and laser running (shooting + track and field) in the men's relay at the UIPM 2024 World Championships held in Zhengzhou, China on the 10th. It rose to the top, beating Ukraine (1,442 points, 2nd place) and France (1,427 points, 3rd place). In 2022, Korea won the world championship men's relay for the first time in two years since Jeon Woong-tae and Jeong Jin-hwa (35).
In the women's relay, in which Kim Seon-woo (28, Gyeonggi Provincial Office) and Seong Seung-min (21, Korea National Sport University) participated, Korea recorded a total of 1,321 points, beating Egypt (1,282 points, 2nd place) and Guatemala (1,271 points, 3rd place) for the first time in history. The modern pentathlon event at the Paris Olympics, which opens in July, will feature only the men's and women's individual events. However, Korea won both the men's and women's relay races held 40 days before the Olympics, showing the possibility of winning the individual event at the Olympics as well. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Jeon Woong-tae gave Korea its first ever medal (bronze) in the men's individual event.
