Blue's guide to the backrooms wikidot

Hi! My name is Blue, also known as blauwje/appletown, and I've been of a fan of the backrooms ever since 2019. I haven't made any real contributions to the wikidot, so I can't really be classified as an oldhead but I've been following the progression of the tales and the lore ever since the wikidot was first made in 2020.

To preface absolutely everything, I will not be discussing Kane Pixels' analog horror series about the backrooms nor any of the games, as they exist in a different canon outside of the wikidot and they don't interest me. I don't owe you a deep analysis of either of those just because I'm doing one for the wikidot, as I'm just some random autistic kid with a special interest in the backrooms and way too much time on their hands. Do not ask me for one.

All of this will be handwritten by me, with referrals back to the wikidot and official wikipedia page (in case of the "what are the backrooms" section.)

My personal rentry is here and my tumblr is here.

Introductions aside, I made this guide of a sort (with personal tangents and a very casual writing style) to help newer fans know where to start on the wikidot! The persons of interest page on the wikidot is really outdated, and theres way too many levels and anomalies to sort through to find ones that won't help you understand more. I'm here to help people find the most important characters and pages, and to understand more about the wikidot's levels, tales, anomalies, groups and persons of interest. This won't be an in-universe thing, so I'll the featuring places and groups that are supposed to be kept "top-secret" in the universe of the backrooms.

Here's a table of contents to help you out.

The ACTUAL guide

So, you found the backrooms wikidot through whatever means, and now you're kind of overwhelmed with the amount of pages there are to look through. Where do you start? Well,

What are the backrooms?

As you probably know, the original photo of the backrooms was shared by an anonymous user on 4chan's /x/ (paranormal) board, dating back to May 12th of 2019. Someone replied to the photograph of the photo on the 13th, adding a caption that read as follows;

If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in.
God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you...

level0photo
Attachment above is a photo of level 0, the level described in the original creepypasta for the backrooms.

Ever since it's conception, the backrooms has been a very popular internet urban legend with very mysterious origins, as nobody knows where the original photo was taken.
There have been multiple fanprojects based off of this internet urban legend, one of the most popular being the wikidot. And because everyone can contribute to the wikidot, there have been many groups and additions to the series as a whole. Where I'm trying to go with this is that pages can contradict each other, since not everyone has the same idea of how to backrooms works.

Liminal spaces?

The backrooms got popular because of it's creepiness, but why was it even so creepy in the first place? Well, the backrooms were part of a big wave of liminal spaces, which were very popular on social media in around 2019-2021. (Fun fact; Liminal spaces actually became so popular as they are today because of the backrooms!) Liminal spaces are "transitional areas" between two places that had no visible life, dimly lit areas and a looming sense of nostalgia. Many people felt that they were oddly familliar, but the lack of inhabitation made them feel too unfamilliar.

Well, what about the wikidot?

The wikidot for the backrooms was made in April of 2020, a bit of time after the fandom wiki was established. While the wikidot is the most popular fanwiki for the backrooms, there is no concrete official one.
The wikidot is run by contributors, which can be anyone as long as they have a greenlight on the page they want to post.

Where do i start?

Yes, that is the question that you're here to get answered.... well, I suggest going to the basics page that I have linked right below this! I summed up everything important that I could think of, and I'll be adding more things as time goes on and the wiki evolves(its only been around for three years, and a lot of pages are getting rewrites right now!! things are subject to change). I tried my best to sort things and make it seem as cohesive as possible.
