since just about everyone who cared enough to uphold the primordial guidelines is 'dead'<a href="#I-mean-obviously-not-including-me-but-lets-not-get-into-that-for-now-shall-we?">,</a> I think its safe to start asking ourselves these questions again.
What are we doing here?
Why are we here?
What do we want from this?
What do we want to do with this?
What is this supposed to mean to us?
I'm not literally asking these questions, but I really want to know what are our opinions of this.
explain the problematic background
explain how good it would be to have this
let them know someone made an alternative to make this happen
I want you to use degritone's master script
dollars-bbs.org hasn't got a major update for years and honestly, it helps to add that retro-feel the site currently has <i>(I mean heck, this site was made in 2010. That's 12 years ago bro, this site is reek of pure 2010s aura).</i> And while its nice to have the site gave off this aura of mystique akin to witnessing an organization from a fictional world coming to life, no one could deny that some updates to improve the site's ease-of-accessibility would be freakin' nice.
Q:"Well, ask the admin to update the site then!"
So yeah, that's kinda what we did. We asked & urged Reltair (the admin) to add new features & update the site, but for a seemingly personal reason, he decided that the site at its current state is already final & he told us there won't be addition of new features anymore except for bug-fixings. And after a few more unsuccessful attempts of coercion, we too decided its better to just move on & figuring out the next best alternative.
"Perhaps some sort of user-made browser extension/addon that inserts new features to the site, something that the community members could have control over..?" Some of us pondered.
Comes... Javascript Injector, a tool that allows user to alter how a website look & how they functioned, but only in their computer alone. Think of it as playing your favorite game with mods, the new features & changes can only appear locally. <a href="https://dollars-bbs.org/random/res/1621789786.html#961">Home board</a> is the first fruit of this idea, & also the first of many many fruits to come out of this proposal (which I'll link at the bottom).

thread should be opened up to an introduction of the general idea of a subgroup, with some elaboration on that and clarification on what the thread is actually for if necessary. general idea of subgroup should not imply they must be true/false subgroups
Dollars in general has no hard and concrete purpose - Never did. When I (Navi) mention supporting the community, I don't necessarily mean requirements like that. We're not a charity- And support doesn't always entail monetary. People come together, and a community supports itself.
I don't know that it's wrong to promote personal projects, but I also don't think it's right to assume people should support it. The support you receive from the community should ideally fall relevant to what the community is to you, basically.
As an example, when I had spare money I was happy to toss it at people who needed it - But it was a personal choice I made, wanting to support them. The friends I made in BBS all had their personal projects or milestones they wanted to pursue, whether it was hacks of old ROMs, or website design, or pursuing college education, or keeping a roof over their family's head- Or finding a roof for their family's head.
And all of those things where things I felt like the BBS was ideal for. You could find people who shared similar interests in coding and work together. You could find people who had experience with webdesign to give advice on your mock-ups. You could find people who went through college and majored in this or that who could help you understand the things you're struggling with, or better understand the road you were about to take.
Throwing money at something is a very straight forward and honestly somewhat impersonal approach to supporting someone, and sometimes I guess it's really the only way to help, but my impression of the BBS as a community's goal being to support and encourage each other is more in line with the idea that those who value their connections with others could and should take the initiative to enrich those connections and relationships by becoming involved.
So with the gofundme example- I wouldn't personally approve of "hey I need funding for my start up idea, toss some cash my way please??"
but "Hey I need people with experience in this industry who might know how to help me make this a reality?" is something I'd be more satisfied with.
Collaboration is key to support.
It's the same critical kind of difference between "we should all donate money to this charity!" and "We should organize a group to go do something nice locally!"
