The Lost Notes of Matteo

Matteo’s life began on a rainy March night, bundled in a blue blanket with no name, left on the steps of an orphanage in the heart of Milan. A small silver cross dangled from his tiny wrist, the only token of a story no one would ever know. The nuns at the Orfanotrofio del Sacro Cuore named him Matteo, a name that meant "gift from God," but the reality of his arrival felt much more complicated. Growing up in a Catholic orphanage, he was surrounded by the rigid structure of faith and routine, yet felt the absence of something inexplicable—something that made him feel like he was looking through a window, forever observing a life just out of reach.

The orphanage was often cold and quiet, with whispers of laughter and play slipping into the shadows whenever an adult passed by. The days stretched long, punctuated by hours of study, meals eaten in reverent silence, and prayers that seemed to echo across endless stone corridors. But at age four, Matteo found a reprieve from the monotony of life in an unexpected place—the small music room near the chapel.

One afternoon, as he wandered through the orphanage, he was drawn by a sound that was as foreign to him as it was fascinating: the notes of a piano, soft yet powerful, filling the air with an energy he could feel deep within his small, curious heart. He followed the sound and pushed open the heavy door, his eyes widening as he saw a young woman sitting at an old upright piano, her fingers dancing over the keys like magic. Her name was Elena, a social worker who had come to the orphanage as part of a temporary service placement, a detail Matteo was too young to understand or question.

Elena was kind, with a warm smile and an infectious laugh. Unlike the nuns and priests who moved with the somber pace of devotion, she brought with her a spark of life and light. Matteo watched her, entranced by the way her hands seemed to know the piano’s secrets. In time, his fascination must have caught her attention, because one day she gestured for him to come closer and asked, "Do you want to try?"

At first, his small fingers stumbled over the keys, producing awkward and clashing sounds that made him blush. But Elena only laughed gently, taking his hands and showing him how to press down gently, how to listen for the melody hidden in the ivory and ebony. Slowly, under her patient guidance, Matteo began to learn the basics of the piano. Each day after their lessons, he would feel as though he had left a little piece of himself in those keys, and in return, he took with him the sense of purpose he had never known before.

Elena became Matteo's closest connection to the outside world. She taught him how to listen, not just to the notes of the piano, but to the quiet voices of the world around him. When he played, he felt as though he was telling a story without words—a story only he and the piano understood.

For nearly two years, this routine continued. Matteo was hardly ever without Elena's guidance, his world expanding through each lesson and conversation. But one afternoon, when he arrived at the music room, she was not there. And the next day, nor the day after. One of the nuns, sensing his confusion, explained in her gentle but resigned way that Elena’s time at the orphanage had ended; she had completed her service and moved on to a new placement in a different city. Her departure was sudden and left a void in Matteo’s heart, a wound that throbbed silently as he returned, alone, to the keys they once played together.

Life at the orphanage settled back into its routine. Yet for Matteo, there was no turning back. Every day, he slipped into the music room, practicing the pieces Elena had taught him, even if the melodies sounded bittersweet now, echoing with memories of a friend he never got to say goodbye to.

Years passed, and Matteo grew into a quiet young man. The silver cross around his wrist now fit snugly, a reminder of his roots but also of the lost ties that marked his life. Playing the piano had become his refuge, his only means of expressing the emotions he couldn’t share with others. By the age of eightteen, he had mastered the piano with a skill that moved even the priests who had seen many boys come and go through the orphanage's doors.

But Matteo’s playing was more than a skill; it was a yearning, an attempt to reach back to a moment he could never fully relive. When he played, he wasn’t just striking keys—he was reaching for that sense of connection he had felt with Elena, the only person who had made him feel truly seen. In each note, he poured his longing, his dreams, and his unanswered questions about the family he would never know. For Matteo, the piano had become more than an instrument; it was a bridge to the world outside, to a life he longed for yet feared he’d never attain.

One autumn evening, as he played alone in the chapel, an older priest sat beside him. "You play beautifully, Matteo," the priest said softly. "But I hear a sadness in your music. Why is that?"

Matteo paused, fingers hovering above the keys, then replied, "Because it’s the only voice I have."

In that moment, Matteo realized that he had a choice. He could remain within these walls, forever playing the same notes of loss and solitude, or he could seek the life he had been waiting to live. The thought was frightening—he had never known a life beyond the orphanage. But he had also never known a life without music, and if he wanted his music to mean something, he would have to carry it with him into the world outside.

And so, one crisp morning, he packed his few belongings, wrapped his beloved cross around his wrist, and walked out of the orphanage. The streets of Milan opened before him, loud and chaotic, full of people with lives of their own. He felt lost, but also free. Somewhere, beyond the city’s noise and its people, he hoped to find the melodies he had yet to play, the people he had yet to meet, and perhaps even the pieces of himself that had been missing all these years.

Matteo’s story was only beginning, written in the silent echoes of piano keys and in the spaces between each note—a story that would, one day, belong only to him.

  • He will always say he is a soloist musician. But he will also work almost literally anything to pay his bills.
  • Despite being raised in a strict Catholic orphanage, he is always the disorganised one. His motto is "out of chaos comes creation".
  • The tattoo on his chest is a catholic cross; a memento of where he came from and a replacement of the catholic cross bracelet he used to wear growing up. He decided to replace it to a tattoo because he disliked to be mistaken as a devout catholic for wearing it.
  • His other tatto is "la vita è fatta così" (life is just like that) in cursive on his lower abdomen, near his left-side v-line.
  • Matteo's flat is located in the outskirts of Milan, where the flat rate is more afforable for him. See here for the interior layout
  • As an Italian, Matteo knows how to dress well. His daily style is normally a very casual street wear, however he owns several shirts and trousers for putting together a semi-formal outfit. His closet is consisted of clothes that are mostly in neutral or dark colour. All of them are purchased from either flea markets, thrift stores or secondhand stores (because he is too broke to buy from designer stores or malls).
  • Matteo listens to music a lot, especially when he is outside. Here is his playlist

The Harmonies

  • Elena (NPC)
She is pivotal figure in Matteo’s childhood. Elena taught him piano, the reason he fell in love with music, and gave him a rare sense of connection and stability. Her unexplained departure from the orphanage left Matteo feeling deeply abandoned.
  • Giorgia Aiello
Giorgia is in a relationship with Matteo. They met during his first year of scuola superiore. When Matteo left the orphanage, he was still a student, which led to frequent rejections when he tried to rent apartments in metropolitan Milan. Giorgia, his only close friend at the time, helped him find an affordable place, strengthening their bond. With Matteo, she is always upbeat, though she keeps her own past to herself, preferring instead to prod Matteo for stories about his life.
  • Marcello Lombardi
Marcello is a foreign kid whom Matteo first met in the orphanage. Matteo did not really pay attention to him at first, but since he felt sorry how the other kids bullied him for being a foreigner, he ended up helping Marcello. They eventually became friends; Matteo taught Marcello Italian while Matteo learned a little bit of Korean from him. If Matteo were to asked who Marcello is to him, he would say that Cello is his brother.

If you want to discuss for relations or interactions, DM is always open. So don't be shy :)
Also, foreign languages will be used in this page as well as in interactions of the account since Matteo is a polyglot. In contrast, writer is not. So, please bear with me if there is any translation error; I am still learning the languages as well. I speak more English than Indonesian too irl, so pardon me if I can only write Matteo in English. Please let me know if you wish to write in bilingual (me in English, you in Indonesian), I certainly can do that.
That is all, thank you for reading this far. Ciao!
