Bertie and Brett: Quest for the Purple Cheese

This story is about a girl named Bertie Jones and her best friend, Brett Johnson. They're both in middle school. Bertie has a 13-year-old brother named Kyle, a 10-year-old brother named Jax, a 2-year-old sister named Tia, and a 1-year-old sister named Lizzie. Brett has a 16-year-old sister named Bella. Bella is very devious. Kyle is very funny. Tia is very energetic. Lizzie is named after her cousin. Jax is amazing at video games. And Bertie and Brett? They're on a quest. A quest for the Purple Cheese.

The Purple Cheese is eaten by people who have become allergens. It is found inside caves. But not just any caves. Caves with super tight squeezes. The only discovered way to become an allergen is by eating too many apples. Bertie's uncle John became an allergen way back in 2009, three years before Bertie was even born.

He went inside a cave with a very goofy name to look for the cheese. But he ended up taking a wrong turn and got stuck. You've probably heard of it. You already know this happened in 2009, but did you know it specifically happened on November 24th? Bertie was born on November 24th. She never got to meet Uncle John. Neither did Kyle or Jax or Tia or Lizzie or anybody else. But she heard the stories. She heard the laughter that Uncle John brought into the room. She heard the tales of his legendary apple eating abilities. But something she didn't know is what happened to people who became allergens.

If someone dies as an allergen, exactly 15 years after they die, they will be revived by apples. Nobody in the family knew this. But now it's 2024. November 24th, 2024.

Bertie looked out of her window and saw the apples. She got up and ran outside. Her family ran outside with her. Brett's family was there, too. Emily, Donnie, and Josh zoomed into their cars, got everybody inside, and followed the apples. They had no idea where they were leading. But they had to follow.

"Follow those apples!" screamed Bertie as they drove through the streets, the car's tires squealing as Donnie took sharp turns. The apples led them to the cave. They got out of the cars and stood around the sealed entrance.

Suddenly, the concrete started to crack. Uncle John rose out of the cave, wearing the exact same awesome shoes he was wearing when he went looking for the cheese. Everyone was shocked. But Bertie knew what to do. She crawled inside the cave and came back up about 27 minutes later, holding the Purple Cheese.

John took the cheese and ate it in one bite. His eyes glowed purple and he levitated in the air as the apples surrounded him. The energy from the cheese washed over him, reversing his allergen status. The family watched in amazement as John returned to his normal state, the apples floating around him dissipating into the sky.

"Could you say hi to Bertie?" asked Emily.

John turned to Bertie. "Chicken strips." said John.

Bertie was confused. "What?"

Emily spoke up. "He really liked chicken strips before the incident," she said.

"Oh," said Bertie with a smile, understanding the significance. "Hi, Uncle John."

The whole family gathered around John, who looked around with a bewildered expression. "Where am I?" he asked.

"You're home, Uncle John," Kyle said, patting him on the shoulder. "We missed you. Even though most of the kids never knew you."

John looked around at the faces of his family, trying to piece together what had happened. "What's the date?"

Donnie stepped forward. "It's November 24th, 2024."

Realization dawned on John's face. "Fifteen years... I can't believe it."

Brett, who had been quietly taking everything in, spoke up. "What do we do now?"

Emily looked at the group. "Well, now we introduce Uncle John to the world of 2024. And maybe get him some new shoes," she said, smiling at his dusty old sneakers.

"But I like these shoes!" said John.

A group of people saw the commotion from their houses and stopped by the cave. "Is that..." said one of them.

"Yep," said Bertie, cutting them off. "That's John."

The crowd grew larger as people recognized him from the old newspaper clippings. They had all heard the legend of Uncle John, the man who disappeared in the cave with the goofiest name. Some thought he had found the cheese and become an allergen. Others thought he was a ghost story.

John looked at the people with a mix of confusion and excitement. "Wow, I'm... I'm back!" He turned to Bertie, his eyes shimmering with wonder. "What's it like here now?"

Bertie took his hand. "Come on, Uncle John. We've got a lot of catching up to do."

They started to walk back to the cars, but before they could go far, a young girl with bright blue hair approached them. "Excuse me," she said, "I heard you guys found the Purple Cheese. Is it true?"

Bertie nodded, still holding onto the cheese. "Yeah, we did."

The girl's eyes grew wide. "Oh my gosh, that's amazing! My mom used to tell me stories about it when I was little. She said it could cure any allergy."

"It's true," said John, smiling. "It just cured me of being an allergen."

The girl looked hopeful. "Could I... I mean, do you think it could help my little brother? He's allergic to everything."

Emily stepped forward. "Bring him here, sweetie."

The girl ran off and came back with a small boy, his eyes red and puffy from an allergic reaction. "This is Timmy," she said, her voice quivering. "He's only eight."

Emily took the cheese from Bertie and knelt beside Timmy. "Here you go," she said, breaking off a tiny piece. "This might taste weird, but it'll make you all better."

Timmy took the cheese, and as soon as it touched his tongue, his eyes cleared up. The family watched in amazement as his symptoms disappeared. The girl's mother rushed over, tears in her eyes. "Thank you," she said, hugging Emily tightly. "Thank you so much."

The crowd grew even larger, and soon, people were lining up, hoping for a taste of the Purple Cheese. Emily looked at John, then at Bertie. "We can't keep this to ourselves," she said. "We have to help everyone."

Brett nodded in agreement. "But we need to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands," he said. "Bella, remember?"

Bella rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah, I'm not that devious anymore," she said. "But you guys should totally start a business or something. The Allergy-Busting Cheese Company!"

The family laughed, but there was a hint of seriousness in their voices. They knew they had something powerful, something that could change lives. With the cheese in their possession, they had a responsibility.

John looked at his family, then at the eager faces of the people around him. "Alright," he said, a twinkle in his eye. "Let's go save some lives."

And so, the Jones family and Brett, now known as the Purple Cheese Pioneers, set out to share their discovery with the world. They faced challenges, from skeptical doctors to greedy business moguls, but together, they remained determined to help those suffering from allergies.

As word spread, more and more people were cured, and the legend of Uncle John and the Purple Cheese grew. The Jones' home became a beacon of hope for families dealing with the frustrations of allergies. And Bertie and Brett, once just two middle schoolers on a wild quest, found themselves at the forefront of a movement that would touch the hearts of people everywhere.

Their friendship grew stronger, bound by the secret they had uncovered and the lives they had changed. As they grew older, they continued to explore the mysteries of the cheese, discovering new ways to harness its power and reach more people in need.

And every year on November 24th, they would return to the cave, not just to remember where it all began, but to honor the uncle they had brought back and the legacy of hope they had created together. The day of Uncle John's rebirth had become a day of celebration for all those whose lives had been changed by the Purple Cheese.
