๐ Book Awards
Welcome to the Index for Book Awards! Below are the most renowned book awards from all around the world.
I've categorized them in order of importance, and I've found all of the links myself from Wikipedia or in book circles.
I've used Gemini to help me with the descriptions.
If I've left out an award which is influential, please DM me and I'll implement it.
First of all,
Why are Book Awards a good thing?
General book recommendations like "if you liked this, read this" might be great for some people, but book awards are fundamentally different.
Algorithms and social media-driven recommendations like BookTok often lean into what is popular, but book awards are often judged by experts like authors, critics, librarians, and scholars. These experts value how a book is structured, the quality of the prose, the depth of the themes, and its originality rather than the vibe it gives or how it is paced.
If someone receives a literary award, it means they have written a book which pushes boundaries or has achieved something remarkable in storytelling. Awards create a level playing field where a debut novel from an independent press can stand next to a bestseller, and they are able to change the careers of authors. They receive a significant bump in sales of their book, and it provides job security for authors. When a prize is received, it is usually translated into several different languages, allowing readers around the world to experience books they might never have encountered in their native language.
Some awards are location-specific and celebrate literature exclusively from a single country.
For non-English speaking regions, such as Spain's Premio Cervantes, the works are featured in their original language.
Literature is universal, and there are usually translations of these works. Geo-exclusivity doesn't make an award any less reputable.
Regional awards are marked with a flag icon; hover over any flag to see its corresponding country.
