The algorithm is something that haunts creators on every platform. If your videos aren’t entertaining or friendly enough, you’re likely to never appear on someone’s home page. If you’re offensive or boring enough, your tweet may never gain more than 100 views. If you don’t use the right tags, your tiktok may never take off. These sites, along with many others, make their content almost pay to win or a fight for content, people reposting the same five funny memes over and over again. So, how do you beat the algorithm? How do you win the internet?

Across each platform, there are different qualifications for making an algorithm friendly post. On YouTube, your videos need to attract an audience. This can be done using flashy thumbnails and quick intros. On TikTok, you have about 3-5 seconds to grab someone’s attention. If they don’t see something interesting right away, they’re more likely to scroll. Even on Twitter, people will only interact with something they deem entertaining.

So, what is useful on each site?

Youtube
1. FLASHY THUMBNAILS

When people are scrolling through YouTube, bored out of their mind and looking for something entertaining, they only have two factors to attract them: The thumbnail and the title. Many people want to know what they’re getting into when they click a video, so using a minecraft thumbnail for a cooking vlog probably isn’t the best idea.

What you can do is be entertaining. Many youtubers will add giant red circles and arrows to their thumbnails, showing the viewer exactly what the video is about. Others will use colorful text or cartoons to depict what the video is about. At the end of the day, every individual viewer will not be attracted to the same things. Expand your horizons and mix it up if you have to.

2. ENTERTAINING TITLES

The title of every video is important. The funnier, the better. But, you have to remember to stay on topic. Take the first video uploaded to YouTube- me at the zoo. The title describes perfectly what is happening in the video. When you click on it, there is a man. At the zoo. Exactly like the title depicts.

But, what if you don’t do this? What if you make false claims in your titles- like saying Mr. Beast was featured in your video, or taking a celebrity's words out of context and morphing them to fit your narrative? This is called clickbait. It’s generally frowned upon.

But, views are important. Many people will do whatever it takes in their titles, often as bait. What can you do in a world where attention is valued?

3. QUICK INTROS + FAST PACED

Because of YouTube’s preview feature, viewers are able to see the beginning of your video without even clicking on it. These play for about 30 seconds, which means you have even less time to grab the viewer's attention. Creators will often summarize the video in that time or place a clip from later in the video, causing the viewer to stay around and see the context.

Even then, people may click off if they think your content is boring, or not fast enough. To help combat this, you can keep each individual segment short, keeping the viewer entertained. You can also layout chapters, giving the viewer the option to click on whatever segment they may find entertaining.

4. LIMIT SWEARS

YouTube may hide your content if you swear in the first 30 seconds up to even the first minute of your videos. If you swear frequently through the video, or say something offensive or something that could be taken out of context, they may shadowban your video, or demonetize it.

To prevent this, you can wait to curse in your videos, or not curse at all. On YouTube, there are more popular family friendly c realtors than there are others. Keep this in mind when deciding what kind of content you’d like to create.

5. GOOD VISUALS

People may click off of your video if the editing isn’t great. In recent years, people have added custom captions to their videos to force attention onto the screen. Others have personified their editors into characters that appear on screen, interacting with the creator or mocking them. Things like this will entertain your viewer, maybe even leading them to comment.

Twitter
1. FUNNY CONTENT

To gain popularity on Twitter, you need to be funny. Simple posts rarely gain traction. People are more likely to like or repost something entertaining- like a funny video. Many meme accounts are popular for this reason.

2. RAGEBAIT

Ragebait is posted specifically for angry comments and reposts, which give the original post more views, furthering the amount of people it can reach. People often post ragebait over serious topics- like genocide or politics. It’s also seen on a smaller scale in different sub groups of Twitter, specifically ones dedicated to fandoms.

For ragebait to be effective, it needs to offend the majority of a group. This can be done by confidently saying something that isn’t true or confidently being offensive.

3. “OFFENSIVE” CONTENT

Tying in with ragebait, offensive content is something guaranteed to give you clicks. It doesn’t matter which group you offend, because people will defend their beliefs. You can post about the left, the right, or even a specific culture or minority and you are guaranteed to have people in the comments debunking you or calling you slurs.

4. FIT IN

When you post something that the majority of people will agree with, you are likely to gain followers. Whether this is a political group or a popular sub group, it can be easy to assimilate into their humor and needs.

5. COMMUNITIES

There are many sub groups of Twitter that act as a small community, often following each other and interacting with each other's posts. If you are able to find a group that suits your interest, you can join it with the hopes of having people repost your content, spreading it around the site.

TikTok
1. Tags

Having popular tags in your videos will force them onto people’s for you page, encouraging them to watch the video. This can give you a higher chance of having likes and further engagement.

Popular tags people use are: #fyp , #foryoupage , #viral , #xyzbca , and #trending .

2. Gather their attention

Having something entertaining in the first few seconds of your tiktok will keep people from scrolling, interested in what is happening. This can be done with a big drop (literal and metaphorical), something heartbreaking, or something flashy.

3. Short videos

TikTok is more likely to push shorter videos onto people’s for you pages, and people are more likely to stick around for the entirety of a short video. However, if you are looking to get paid for your content, you will not be able to receive revenue for videos under 60 seconds.

To combat this feature, some people will have the video play multiple times, often tricking people to stay around. Others will just have the end of the video be a black screen. Other, more desperate, creators may beg you to stick around, promising something funny at the end of the video.

4. Funny content

People are more likely to engage with funny content. Thinks like quick, funny videos or multiple text posts will attract viewers, sometimes having them comment about a particular thing or even tagging people they know.

5. Relevant content

If you post content related to current events, people will most likely receive your videos on their for you pages. This brings interested people to your page, and will likely cause people to comment or repost your videos. Staying relevant is important when posting anywhere.
