ON March 10th, 2024, controversial Youtuber Rusty Cage (known for The Noose Song and the Knife Game Song) livestreamed his supposed suicide to hundreds of live viewers. Cage rose to popularity in 2011 with his song, The Knife Game Song, which instructs the listener how to play the Five Finger Fillet. For the past 13 years, his popularity has only increased as he tests the limits of what is and what is not allowed (or, often legal) to be posted onto video streaming site YouTube.

Over the past few years, the youtuber has been filming himself building a guillotine in his own backyard- yes, a guillotine, used in France as a form of execution for nearly two centuries. Many fans noticed the sudden dark turn in the series, questioning what the result of his efforts would be. The youtuber made it difficult to differentiate fiction from reality, incorporating real world disasters and devastation into his content.

After nearly two years of hard work, the final installation in his series, where his mental decline became glaringly obvious. That day, Cage posted two messages to Twitter, one hours before his filmed suicide and the other only an hour after the stream began. Fans quickly assumed the worst, many in the live chat worried for his safety. Close friends quickly began to call him, leaving nearly 30 minutes for the audience to question the legitimacy of the act, as well as hear Rusty’s phone explode with notifications until the stream ended- supposedly because it overheated.

Those close to Rusty report to have had no idea of the man's intentions. Many fans quickly went to Twitter, contacting the youtuber’s close friends to report on his status. Simian Jimmy (Known commonly as Mumkey Jones) tweeted, “I've been getting a lot of messages about rusty. I tried calling him 3 times just now and he won't answer. His stream is still going but nobody is there. I don't know what's going on either” an hour after the incident.

One worried fan, who will remain anonymous, attempted to contact the authorities for a welfare check. Quickly, the police grew tired of the badgering with little to no evidence on the man's actual safety. So, he did the only logical thing: Doxxed Cage online, begging fans to call the police themselves. Friends of Rusty quickly asked him to take the post down, which he did.

Four months later, Rusty’s status is still unknown- But, a company called Cage Tech has sprouted, having been founded by Cage before his death. His memory lives on with the efforts of this company, telling others how they can build their own guillotines.
