  • charles and moral culpability.

    • in an interview (3:30), james mcavoy (charles' actor) talks about what i believe is the most negative quality of his character. "as much as [charles helping someone] is kind and generous, it puts [him] in a position in his mind which is, sort of in charge, or having some kind of moral authority, even."
    • i think how charles acts after ravens death exemplifies this trait . he sees himself, and sometimes, albeit rarely, as morally superior because of what he's said or done to (help) someone in the past.
    • He is not absolved of the fault for killing her and even when outright told cant admit it. Charles sees himself as benevolent, & when faced with the fact that his "help" was more of a hinderance, he ignores it. Although logically he must know, he is unable to take accountability.
    • While personally i think that dark phoenix almost cartoonishly exaggerates character traits, (likely another reason for its generally low ratings), i think that how he acts during his argument with hank after ravens killed is very telling of his nature.
    • charles brings up the past, (when he took raven in as a child) when hank tries to discuss it, almost insiniuating that hes absolved of his guilt. This, in my opinion is charles at his most unlikeable. hes dispensing generosity not just for the sake of it, but so that in the future, others are obligated, whether in favours or gratitude, thus creating a position of power for him.
  • charles and arrogance.

    • i think that his moral superiority can also manifest in arrogance. As a telepath and empath, charles to some extent believes that being inside someone's mind means that he understands them totally, and knows what's best for them.
    • ironically, i think being micromanaged (particularly as he does to raven) would irk charles severely.
    • theres also something to be said about how charles is almost paternal to his students, likely wishing them better adolescences than his (as he grows up neglected in some timelines as well as having a canonically m.i.a biological father in first class). As he parentifies himself, he also has issues letting go, best exemplified by, again, raven.
    • some combination of his heightened empathy and paternal care for his students (and friends) manifests his arrogance towards them. in the end, he does care about raven and jean, and his arrogance manifests not out of anger but protectiveness.
  • charles and hope

    • i think a lot of people interpret charles (especially in first class) as innocent; he and erik symbolising innocence and realism, but, in my opinion, he represents hope while erik represents nihilism.
    • charles is not blind nor stupid. in the chess scene, he acknowledges that eriks goal has always been to kill shaw, not to "defeat" him. he's aware of his partner's goals, and isnt so naive as to think he can stop him.
    • where erik and charles differ most sharply is exactly this in their attitudes towards humanity. while charles believes there is good in everything; most notable in his speech to erik, which actually can be taken to be about his attitude towards humanity too.
    • charles hopes and believes that humanity can be redeemed, and that the hatred towards mutants isn't inherent, thus able to be trained out of them. erik however, believes that this is but a pipe dream, and that mutants are better off arming themselves for war against humans than trying to "play nice".
    • charles' hope is what separates him, raven and erik. its pure, but not entirely innocent. he's seen horrible things happen at the hands of either side, and believes in better for all. this mindset, in my opinion, his most defining characteristic, and i consider it very admirable.
  • charles and typology
